Rule out the common causes first
Use this sequence to find out whether the issue follows the display input, cable, or source device. Change one thing at a time so the result is useful.

- Check power and input. Turn on the source device, then use the TV or monitor’s source menu to select the HDMI input where the cable is plugged in. A wrong input can look like a failed port. Samsung’s TV troubleshooting guide and Philips’ HDMI guidance both begin with these basic checks.
- Reconnect the cable. Turn the devices off as appropriate, unplug the HDMI cable at both ends, and reconnect it firmly. Do not force the connector; check that it sits straight and securely in the socket.
- Try a different HDMI input. Move the cable to another input on the TV or monitor, then select that input from its menu. Ports on the same device may not all support the same functions, so consult the device manual if a particular feature or format is involved.
- Try a known-good compatible cable. A cable can be loose, damaged, or unsuitable for the signal you are trying to use. For example, Samsung advises checking compatibility for UHD or 8K devices. A replacement cable can rule out a cable fault, but it cannot repair a physically broken socket.
- Swap the source or display. Connect another HDMI source to the suspect display, or connect the original source to another display. If the original source fails on multiple displays, investigate that source. If several sources fail only on one input, the display’s port is more suspect. Dell’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the connected device and cable before treating the port as a hardware failure.
If the HDMI port is connected to a computer
A computer can have a display-setting, driver, operating-system, or firmware problem even when the socket is intact. On Windows, confirm that the intended external display is enabled and that the selected display mode is appropriate. Check for graphics-driver and operating-system updates using the computer maker’s support instructions.
Dell advises checking whether the display works in BIOS/UEFI. If it works there but stops working after Windows starts, software or settings are more likely than a failed port. If it does not work in BIOS, or the same hardware problem appears with other devices, a hardware fault becomes more plausible. Follow the instructions for your specific computer to enter BIOS/UEFI; the method varies by model.

When the port itself may be damaged
Look for a socket that is visibly bent, broken, unusually loose, or unable to hold the plug securely. Also note whether the problem remains with that one input after testing a known-good cable and another source device. A single failing input is stronger evidence of a port fault than a “no signal” message by itself.
Dell’s HDMI FAQ, modified May 1, 2026, says: “Bent pins can sometimes be carefully straightened; broken ports need replacement.” That is Dell support guidance, not a guarantee that a damaged connector can safely be repaired at home or that the same repair applies to every device.

Should you replace the HDMI socket yourself?
There is no universal replacement socket: the connector must match the device’s board and its footprint. Replacing a board-mounted HDMI connector involves delicate soldering near other components, and a mistake can cause further damage. The HP monitor service guide gives a model-specific connector-replacement example for professional repairers. It warns about shorting nearby pins and overheating the board, and calls for testing HDMI image and sound after repair. It is evidence that replacement is possible—not a general consumer DIY procedure.
Before opening a TV, computer, monitor, console, or other device, check its warranty and the manufacturer’s service options. Repair eligibility depends on the model, region, warranty status, and nature of the damage. For example, Dell says service for a damaged port depends on warranty and damage severity; Samsung directs users to service if its troubleshooting does not resolve a TV HDMI problem. Contact the relevant manufacturer or a qualified repair provider for model-specific advice.
