Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

CHOICE, an Australian consumer organization, estimates that lifespan from product-life research and survey inputs. A television’s first major fault, the life of its screen panel, the cost of repair, and the point when its features no longer suit you are different measures of “lasting.”
How long do TVs last these days?
CHOICE estimates TV life expectancy at 7–8 years. Its estimate combines responses from more than 3,500 people in a 2023 product-lifespan survey, a 2018 Consumer NZ manufacturer survey, and product characteristics. It is intended to help compare repair and replacement costs, not to predict when an individual television will stop working. The organization’s guide explains the estimates and methodology.

CHOICE also found that 457 TV owners who had experienced a major problem reported an average of 4.7 years until that first major issue. That figure applies to respondents who reported a major fault; it does not mean the average TV fails after 4.7 years. Some major faults can be repaired, so the first problem is not necessarily the end of the set’s useful life.

For planning purposes, treat 7–8 years as a broad estimate, then judge your own set by its condition and repair options. CHOICE says the panel itself may last about 10 years, but that is a panel estimate, not a whole-TV guarantee. Other components can fail sooner, and a damaged panel is generally not repairable.

There is also a practical rather than mechanical end of life: a TV may still show a picture even when its smart features, performance, or supported services no longer meet your needs. Replacing a working set for newer features is a preference-driven upgrade, not evidence that the old TV has failed.
How long do smart TVs last?
The available lifespan estimate is for TVs as a category; it does not establish a separate lifespan for smart TVs. A smart TV’s useful life can end for two different reasons: a hardware fault, or software and connected features that no longer suit the household. The latter can make a set feel outdated while its display and other hardware still work.

CHOICE notes that newer sets can offer streaming and other features. Whether those improvements justify an upgrade is a household decision, not a measure of the television’s physical durability.
Do OLED TVs last as long as LED TVs?
The available evidence does not establish that one current panel category always lasts longer. “LED TV” commonly means an LCD television with LED backlighting; OLED is a different display technology. Each has different strengths and wear considerations, so compare the kind of picture you want and how you use the TV rather than assuming a lifespan winner.

Consumer Reports describes OLED as offering deep blacks, strong contrast, accurate color, wide viewing angles, and fast response, with typically higher prices and a risk of image retention or burn-in. LCD/LED televisions offer a broad range of prices and sizes and can reach high brightness; black levels and viewing angles can be less favorable. These are picture and use trade-offs, not proof of which type will last longer. See Consumer Reports’ overview of TV types.
What OLED burn-in means for viewing habits
RTINGS says cumulative exposure to static images can still cause OLED burn-in. Varied viewing—such as switching among films, shows, and games—is not expected to make burn-in a problem for most people. Long periods of the same bright channel logo, ticker, or fixed interface create a different exposure pattern. Burn-in is possible, but it is not inevitable with ordinary mixed use.

What accelerated longevity tests can and cannot tell you
RTINGS’ earlier accelerated test ran 100 TVs for about two years, with most accumulating more than 18,000 hours of runtime. In that test sample, thin edge-lit LCD designs were more prone to early failure; observed mechanisms included heat and backlight-component damage. The report also describes possible sudden backlight failure in direct-lit sets and how a failed LED can be limited to one zone in a full-array design. These are findings about the designs and conditions tested, not a ranking that predicts the life of every set.

RTINGS began its Longevity 3.0 test on October 2, 2026, with 24 products—12 TVs and 12 monitors. Initial measurements had been uploaded, but the sample was too small for conclusions about specific models. Neither the accelerated earlier test nor the newly started test translates directly into years of ordinary home viewing. RTINGS describes the tests and their limits on its Longevity 3.0 and burn-in page.

Is it worth repairing a TV?
Compare a diagnosis and repair quote with the cost of a suitable replacement and the value you expect from the current set. CHOICE’s Australian guide uses an average repair cost of A$400 and estimates that, under its assumptions, replacement may become cheaper around years 4–6. Those figures are Australian estimates, not a universal rule: local labor and parts prices, the TV’s age and purchase price, and the fault itself can change the answer.
A relatively inexpensive component fault may be worth fixing, while a costly circuit board can approach the price of a new TV. CHOICE notes that what appears to be a terminal fault may sometimes be a cheaper capacitor; a damaged panel, by contrast, is generally not repairable. Get the actual diagnosis rather than deciding from the symptom alone.
Check warranty coverage before paying
Before authorizing a repair, review the warranty’s duration, covered parts and repairs, promised remedy, claims process, and any labor or shipping costs. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission also cautions that a separately sold service contract may duplicate product-warranty coverage. Its guidance applies to U.S. consumers; check your local consumer protections and the exact terms of your contract. Read the FTC’s warranty guidance.
When should I replace my TV?
Replace it when the repair is uneconomic for you, a fault cannot be fixed at a reasonable cost, or the set no longer meets your needs. Age alone is not enough to decide. A quote for a minor repair may preserve a useful TV; a major repair or panel failure may make replacement more sensible. If the picture and functions still work, wanting newer streaming or display features is a valid reason to upgrade, but it is a choice rather than a technical requirement.
If you do replace it, choose a 4K smart TV based on the features you actually use, your viewing conditions, and your budget—not on a promise that a particular display type guarantees a longer life.
