How to Fix an Expired Screenshot API URL in a Make Workflow

An unavailable screenshot URL may be an old mapped value, a failed download, or a provider-specific retention issue. Trace the Make run and choose the right recovery.

First identify which service issued the image URL: an “expired screenshot URL” can mean a provider-hosted image is unavailable, a Make module is using the wrong or old mapped value, or the download request failed. The fix depends on the URL’s host and the HTTP response; there is no universal expiry period. In Make, inspect the screenshot step’s output, verify the URL passed downstream, and check the download status and response body. If you need durable access, download the image during the scenario and save the file in storage you control.

Identify what has expired

A screenshot workflow handles two different URLs: the webpage URL sent to the screenshot service and the image URL returned by that service. The screenshot output is not necessarily the source webpage URL. Check the failing module’s input to see which one it received.

Start with the host in the failing URL. The service that issued it controls how long it is available, whether account status matters, and whether deletion is permanent. Check that provider’s current documentation rather than assuming every screenshot API uses the same retention policy.

Trace the URL through the Make execution

  1. Open the failed scenario execution. Inspect the screenshot API call or screenshot module. Confirm that it completed successfully and note the returned image URL and image identifier, if provided.
  2. Inspect the next module’s mapped input. It should receive the image URL from the current screenshot result, or the image identifier required by that provider. Check that it is not receiving the original webpage URL or a URL saved from an earlier run.
  3. Check the download result. In Make’s HTTP app, inspect the status and returned body. A failed HTTP request is different from a successful image download followed by an error in a later module.
  4. Confirm the URL format and connection. Make HTTP v4 requires HTTPS URLs. Its HTTP app supports requests, file downloads, and URL resolution. The v4 settings differ from the legacy HTTP app, which Make identifies as version 3.

Make’s integration listing includes HTML/CSS to Image actions named “Create a Screenshot of a URL” and “Get an Image,” alongside HTTP requests and file downloads: Make’s HTML/CSS to Image integration. For HTTP v4 behavior and options, see Make’s HTTP documentation.

If the URL is from HTML/CSS to Image (HCTI)

HCTI says a generated image URL remains accessible as long as the HCTI account is active. Its FAQ answers the question “How long will my image URL work?” with: “Forever. As long as your HCTI account is active, we keep a copy of your generated image stored and accessible from your image URL.” That qualification is specific to HCTI, not a general guarantee for screenshot APIs. See the HCTI FAQ.

If an HCTI image URL cannot be fetched, verify that the account is active, confirm the image was not deleted, and compare the failing URL and image ID with the values returned by the creation step. HCTI documents deletion as removing an image from its servers and CDN cache. If the image remains unavailable, rerun the screenshot request and map the newly returned image URL into the next module. See HCTI API documentation.

For HCTI, the standard API uses Basic authentication: the API ID is the username and the API key is the password. Store credentials in Make’s credential storage; do not expose an API key in a URL or an ordinary mapped field.

Choose between a hosted URL and a saved file

Approach What it depends on Workflow impact Best fit
Pass the provider-hosted URL downstream The provider’s retention rules, account status, deletion state, and service availability. Simpler when later modules can accept a URL. When the provider’s hosting meets your persistence needs.
Download the image and save the file elsewhere The connected storage service and its retention rules. Adds a download and storage step; Make’s HTTP file-download module makes the file data available to later modules. When you need a copy independent of the screenshot provider’s hosted link, or a downstream module needs file data.

Make documents that its HTTP file-download module downloads a file from a URL and exposes the file data to other modules. Choose a storage destination based on your own retention and access requirements; Make’s documentation does not prescribe one.

Common failures and what to check

  • The screenshot step did not succeed: inspect its execution output before troubleshooting the image URL. Correct the screenshot request or authentication issue, then use the URL returned by a successful run.
  • The next module gets the webpage URL: remap it to the screenshot result’s image URL or the provider-required image identifier.
  • The next module uses an old image URL: replace any saved or manually entered value with the current run’s output.
  • The HTTP request returns a 4xx or 5xx: inspect the status and response body to distinguish a missing or inaccessible image from a request or server error. Make HTTP can be configured to return an error when a request fails with a 4xx/5xx response.
  • An HCTI URL is unavailable: check account activity and whether the image was deleted; if needed, create a new screenshot and pass its returned URL downstream.
  • A workflow expects a lasting link: download the image during the scenario and save its file data to a storage service with suitable retention.

Adding a delay or using Make’s URL-resolution module does not establish that an image link’s lifetime is extended. Use those features only for their relevant request or redirect needs, not as an expiry fix.

Or skip the browser setup

If your workflow needs a screenshot API rather than a browser you configure and maintain, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Frequently Asked Questions

Does every screenshot API URL expire after the same amount of time?

No. Retention depends on the service that issued the URL. Check that provider’s documentation and account or deletion rules.

Can Make’s Resolve URL module extend an image link’s lifetime?

No lifetime extension is established by Make’s documentation. URL resolution is not an expiry remedy.
