For a Mac model, check the keyboard’s power switch and your Mac’s Bluetooth, then connect the keyboard to the Mac by a compatible cable for one minute to charge and pair it. The iPad model needs a different set of checks.
Fix a Magic Keyboard that connects to a Mac
These steps apply to Apple’s Mac Bluetooth Magic Keyboard, including rechargeable models and Touch ID variants. If your keyboard attaches to an iPad, skip to the iPad troubleshooting section; it does not use this Bluetooth pairing process.

1. Check the keyboard’s power switch
Slide the switch off, then on again. When the keyboard is on, green is visible beneath the switch. Apple says the keyboard connects wirelessly through Bluetooth when it is turned on and paired. See Apple’s Magic Keyboard connection troubleshooting.

2. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the Mac
Use the MacBook’s built-in trackpad or a USB mouse to open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth. On older macOS versions, the path may say System Preferences instead. Turn Bluetooth on if it is off. If you cannot turn it on, restart the Mac and check again, as Apple recommends.
#1 Best Overall
- Magic Keyboard delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.
- It’s also wireless and rechargeable, with an incredibly long-lasting internal battery that’ll power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges.
- It pairs automatically with your Mac, so you can get to work straightaway.
- It features a USB-C port and includes a woven USB-C Charge Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB-C port on your Mac.
If the keyboard is connected but you have no mouse, Apple also documents a keyboard-driven route: press Command–Space, search for Bluetooth File Exchange, open it, and follow the prompts using Return. Interface labels can vary by macOS version. More details are on Apple’s connection troubleshooting page.
3. Pair and charge it with a cable
Use a cable that fits the keyboard’s charging port and can connect to the Mac. Apple lists USB-C, USB-C to Lightning, and Lightning to USB among the cables used for setup; the right one depends on your keyboard and Mac ports. Turn on the keyboard, connect it to the Mac, and leave it connected for one minute. Apple says the cable connection pairs the accessory and charges its built-in battery. Disconnect the cable when you want to use the keyboard wirelessly. See Apple’s pairing instructions.

- GO WEEKS WITHOUT CHARGING — The incredibly long-lasting internal battery will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges. (Battery life varies by use.) Comes with a Lightning to USB Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB port on your Mac.
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS — Requires a Bluetooth-enabled Mac with macOS 10.12.4 or later, an iPad with iPadOS 13.4 or later, or an iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 10.3 or later.
4. Check the charge level
On the Mac, check Control Centre > Bluetooth or the Bluetooth menu for the keyboard’s battery level; the available route depends on your macOS interface. The keyboard itself does not display a percentage. Apple says a rechargeable Magic Keyboard can be used while charging. Charging guidance for keyboards with USB-C or Lightning ports is in Apple’s battery instructions and Mac charging instructions.

If the keyboard connects but will not stay connected, Apple lists wireless interference as a possible cause. That does not establish that any particular nearby device or router is responsible. Review Apple’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth interference guidance. If the power, Bluetooth, cable, and charge checks do not help, use the further-support options on Apple’s troubleshooting page.

Troubleshoot an older Apple Wireless Keyboard
Some older Apple Wireless Keyboard models have no Lightning port and use replaceable batteries instead of the rechargeable cable workflow. Use the Mac’s built-in trackpad or a mouse to navigate Bluetooth settings.
- Turn on the keyboard and look for a blinking LED, which indicates it is discoverable. If the light does not come on, Apple says the batteries may need replacing.
- If the LED lights briefly but does not blink, the keyboard may already be connected to another nearby Mac. Remove it from that Mac’s Bluetooth device list, then switch the keyboard off and on.
- On the Mac you want to use, open Bluetooth settings and select Connect when the keyboard appears.
- If prompted for a passcode, type it on the keyboard you are setting up and press Return on that keyboard.
Apple’s setup instructions cover this older pairing workflow.

If your Magic Keyboard attaches to an iPad
Magic Keyboard for iPad connects through the Smart Connector. Attach a compatible iPad to the keyboard; it does not need separate Bluetooth pairing, a power switch, or charging. Do not use the Mac keyboard’s Bluetooth or cable-pairing steps for this model. Apple’s iPad keyboard setup and troubleshooting guidance covers the following checks:
- Confirm the keyboard is compatible with your iPad and update iPadOS.
- Disconnect the keyboard and clean the Smart Connector surfaces on the iPad and keyboard with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Remove any other case or cover, where applicable, and reconnect the keyboard.
- If it still does not respond, restart the iPad.
When to seek support or consider a replacement
A failed connection does not by itself show that the keyboard must be replaced. If the appropriate steps for your model fail and you suspect a hardware fault, contact Apple Support or seek qualified repair advice. If you do replace it, check that the keyboard matches your device family (Mac Bluetooth or iPad Smart Connector), intended device compatibility, layout and language, charging connector generation, and desired features such as Touch ID. Apple’s setup and charging pages describe the connection and connector differences, but do not establish current prices or stock.
