A PS5 Slim fan that gets louder during a demanding game is not automatically a fault: Sony says the fan may temporarily run faster to cool the console. Keep the vents clear, leave at least 10 cm of open space around each side, and unplug the console before vacuuming dust from the vents. A replaceable CR2032 CMOS battery has been reported in a newly revised Slim, but that finding comes from a technician’s teardown—not an official procedure for every Slim model.
How PS5 Slim cooling works in everyday use
The fan moves air to help remove heat generated while the console runs. Sony’s official guidance for Slim owners focuses on how to place and clean the console, rather than publishing a detailed airflow diagram or a complete description of the Slim’s internal thermal hardware.

Sony Design has described the original PS5’s design intent as using “a large cooling fan while optimizing the airflow.” That is useful background on the original PS5 family, but it is not a specification of the Slim’s airflow or a guarantee that every Slim revision uses the same cooling parts. Likewise, iFixit’s teardown observations—including a two-sided 120 mm fan, dust ports, heat pipes and a heatsink—are about the original PS5, not the CFI-2000 Slim group or the later revised Slim. Sony Design’s PlayStation 5 Design Story and iFixit’s original PS5 teardown should not be used as Slim-specific hardware diagrams.

PlayStation Support says: “During some games and applications, you may find that your PlayStation®5 console’s cooling fan operates louder than usual.” Sony explains that the fan may temporarily run faster to cool the system. A change in fan volume by itself therefore does not establish that the console is overheating or defective. Sony’s PS5 noise guidance gives the practical checks below.

- Leave at least 10 cm of free space around each side of the console.
- Keep the vents unobstructed and clear of dust.
- Do not use the console on long-fibre carpet or in a cramped, heat-trapping space such as a closed cabinet.
If the console displays an overheating warning, treat that separately from ordinary fan noise: improve ventilation and follow PlayStation Support’s troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming the louder fan is the only issue.
How to clean dust from a PS5 Slim safely
- Turn off and unplug the console. Disconnect the AC cable before cleaning.
- Let it cool. Sony’s CFI-2015 Slim safety guide says to allow the console to cool before removing covers.
- Vacuum around the vents with low suction. Sony recommends a low-powered vacuum to remove dust around the air openings. Do not substitute a deep internal teardown for this routine maintenance.
- If removing a cover, follow the guide for your exact model. Reinstall covers correctly before use; Sony warns that operating the console with incorrectly installed covers may cause overheating.
The CFI-2015 PlayStation 5 Safety Guide (US/Canada edition) covers safe cover handling and M.2 SSD installation, among other topics. It does not provide a coin-cell battery replacement procedure. Sony also warns against disassembling or modifying the console and says electrical-shock servicing should be handled by qualified personnel.

Does the PS5 Slim have a replaceable CMOS battery?
Possibly, depending on the revision—but the available report does not establish that all PS5 Slim consoles have the same battery access or replacement procedure. On 2 October 2026, Video Games Chronicle reported that console technician and modder Modyfikator89 opened a newly revised Limited Edition Wolverine PS5 Slim and found a changed motherboard layout. VGC says the unit had an easily removable and replaceable CR2032 CMOS battery, along with a revised cooling assembly, including a liquid-metal interface and heatsink changes. The findings are attributed to the technician’s teardown, not to an official Sony specification. VGC’s report on the revised Slim does not map the change to every model number or sales region.
That distinction matters before buying a battery or opening a console. Sony’s reviewed CFI-2015 Slim guide contains no CMOS battery instructions, so the reported access should not be treated as a supported universal Slim repair. Check the exact CFI/model number and region, and use applicable official instructions before attempting a replacement.

What the battery does—and what the PS5 Pro guide says
Sony’s PS5 Pro safety guide says replacing that model’s coin battery resets the console’s time and date. It specifies a commercially available CR2032 lithium coin battery installed with the positive side facing up. That guidance is explicitly for PS5 Pro CFI-7021; it does not establish that the Slim has the same access path or that the instructions can be transferred to a Slim. An M.2 SSD can produce heat of its own. Sony says an installed drive needs an effective heat-dissipation structure, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet, unless the SSD already has an integrated cooling structure. The drive and cooler must also fit Sony’s size requirements. These requirements are separate from the console’s main fan and APU cooling: adding an SSD heatsink does not improve the Slim’s system cooling. Before installation, check whether the SSD includes a heatsink and whether the combined drive-and-cooler dimensions meet the limits for your console. Sony’s M.2 SSD installation guidance for the CFI-2000/7000 group gives the relevant fit and cooling-structure requirements.
