If your Android keyboard disappears or will not open, first check whether Android has switched to another keyboard or Gboard is turned off. Then restart the phone and update Gboard before trying more disruptive fixes. These steps follow Google’s Gboard guidance; settings labels can vary by Android version and phone maker.

Check whether Gboard is selected or enabled

Android phones can use keyboards from Google, the phone manufacturer, or other developers. If a different keyboard appears when you tap a text field, Gboard may simply not be selected.

  1. Switch to Gboard: Tap a text-entry field. On the keyboard that appears, touch and hold the globe key, then tap Gboard.
  2. Turn Gboard on: If Gboard is missing from the switcher, open Settings > System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard and turn on Gboard. The menu names or path may differ on your device.

Google documents these checks in its Gboard troubleshooting guide.

Try the low-disruption fixes first

Restart your phone

Restart the device, then tap a text field to see whether the keyboard opens. Google notes that background apps and processes can interfere with Gboard, and recommends restarting as an initial troubleshooting step.
