If an AI agent’s screenshot shows fallback typography—or Playwright stalls while preparing the capture—first make sure the page has reached its final rendered state, then check whether the intended font actually loaded. In Playwright, wait for document.fonts.ready after rendering, and verify the specific face your page needs. If the screenshot call still times out, collect the browser and runtime details: one open report describes this behavior in a particular Linux WebKit setup, not a confirmed general Playwright defect.

Why a screenshot can miss the web font

A screenshot can capture a page before its custom font is available. The browser may show a fallback face while the web font is loading or if its request or face fails. Chrome for Developers explains that slow font loading can leave text invisible and describes font-display choices that can show fallback text while the custom face is unavailable: Ensure text remains visible during webfont load.

There is also a separate automation concern: screenshot preparation may wait for fonts. If that wait does not settle, a capture can time out even when your immediate goal is to diagnose what the page looks like. A capture workaround that skips readiness does not establish that the intended typeface loaded.

Diagnose the page before changing the screenshot call

  1. Render the state that uses the font. Wait for the relevant route, component, and styles to appear. A font may not be requested until the element that uses it is rendered.
  2. Inspect the font request and CSS selection. In browser developer tools or your automation diagnostics, check the font URL and response, network and CORS failures, and whether the computed styles request the expected family, weight, and style.
  3. Check the font set and individual faces. Inspect document.fonts.status and the faces’ loading, loaded, or error states. A failed request or face points toward delivery or font configuration; a font set that remains loading while the capture waits suggests a readiness problem. These clues help separate likely causes, but no single check proves the cause in every case.
  4. Wait after the final render, then verify the face. Await document.fonts.ready. If a particular face is essential, explicitly request it with the Font Loading API and check its result rather than assuming that the general font set being ready means your desired face succeeded.

Wait for fonts before a Playwright screenshot

In Playwright, run the wait in the page context after the app has reached the state you intend to capture. For example, in JavaScript:

await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
// Replace this with a page-specific condition for your final rendered state.
await page.locator('main').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });

domcontentloaded alone does not guarantee that application rendering or font loading is complete. Replace the example’s URL and page-specific locator with the ones for your page. If the site renders asynchronously, wait for a reliable application-specific condition before waiting on fonts.

When one family, weight, or style is required, explicitly load it with representative text before capture and inspect the result. For example:

const fontLoaded = await page.evaluate(async () => {
  const faces = await document.fonts.load('400 16px "Example Sans"', 'Sample text');
  await document.fonts.ready;
  return {
    status: document.fonts.status,
    matchingFaces: faces.map(face => face.status),
  };
});
console.log(fontLoaded);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });

Replace Example Sans with the exact CSS family and use the weight, style, and representative characters relevant to your page. Treat an empty face list or an error state as a reason to inspect the font definition and request, not as confirmation that the desired face is present. Avoid an unbounded wait when investigating a timeout; keep the capture timeout finite and log the font state before and after the wait.

Fix font delivery if the page is yours

  • Verify that the @font-face source URL is correct and reachable from the browser environment.
  • Match the declared family, weight, and style to the CSS applied to the captured text. A working font file will not help if the page selects a different face.
  • Choose a deliberate fallback stack so the page remains legible if the custom font is delayed or unavailable.
  • Consider font-display: swap, fallback, or optional where appropriate. Chrome’s guidance describes these options for displaying fallback text while a custom font is unavailable; fallback metrics can still alter line wrapping and screenshot layout.

Investigate a Playwright font-readiness timeout

An open Playwright issue, opened September 29, 2026 and updated September 30, describes a reproduction using Playwright 1.63.0, bundled WebKit 26.6 revision 2359, and an Ubuntu 24.04 Playwright image. The author reports that document.fonts.status remained loading, an Avenir Next face was in error, and page.screenshot() timed out at the font-wait stage. The same script completed with Playwright 1.60.0. Those are observations from that reproduction—not a general failure rate, a guarantee about either version, or proof of a confirmed general defect. The report says face states were timing-sensitive, intermediate versions were not bisected, the responsible WebKit change was not identified, and an isolated minimal offline reproduction was not established. See Playwright issue #42986.

If your capture hangs, record the Playwright version, browser engine and version, operating system or container image, font-set status, individual face states, screenshot timeout, and relevant call log. Compare a minimal reproduction and another known runtime where practical. In the issue report, setting PW_TEST_SCREENSHOT_NO_FONTS_READY=1 allowed one diagnostic capture to proceed, but a subsequent normal capture timed out again. That environment-variable workaround did not repair font state and is not evidence that the intended font was captured; use such a bypass only as a diagnostic, not as a fix for visual fidelity.

Keep screenshot comparisons reproducible

Use the same operating system, browser version, settings, hardware context, and headless configuration for your reference and current captures. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors in its Visual comparisons guidance. Its screenshot assertion disables animations by default, but animation handling and font readiness are separate concerns; see the PageAssertions API. Matching screenshots across consecutive captures can help settle visual changes, but does not prove a specific font face loaded.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot without building and maintaining the capture setup, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF, and its capture flow accepts cookie and consent banners as a visitor and removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with the outcome reported in response headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools to take screenshots, get page information, or capture PDFs.

For the request and supported options, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. This example saves a WebP response for Stripe; replace the target URL as needed:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo’s free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does document.fonts.ready prove that my preferred font loaded?

No. Check the relevant face’s status and the font request; readiness alone does not confirm that a particular family, weight, or style succeeded.

Should I disable Playwright’s screenshot font wait to fix the missing font?

Not as a font fix. Skipping the wait may let a diagnostic capture proceed, but it does not load the intended face or establish visual fidelity.
