If your goal is one continuous YouTube feed, the main DigitalOcean alternatives are Amazon Lightsail and Hetzner Cloud. They provide virtual servers, not a finished 24/7 streaming service: you still install and maintain an encoder that sends a feed to YouTube. For less server administration, StreamNeo is a managed option: upload a video, add your YouTube stream key, and start the cloud stream. The right choice depends on your bitrate and transfer allowance, how much control you want, and how much ongoing maintenance you can take on.
Which DigitalOcean alternative fits a continuous YouTube stream?
For a self-managed setup, compare the server’s total compute and transfer cost, its region, and the work required to keep the encoder healthy. DigitalOcean, Lightsail, and Hetzner are cloud-server choices; SRS is streaming software you can deploy on a host, not a hosting provider. A managed service shifts more of the continuous-stream workflow to its operator.

| Option | What it provides | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | A managed cloud service for looping uploaded videos to YouTube, with one always-on stream per slot. | It streams to YouTube only. One flat slot price applies to any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps; the first day is free, with no card required. See StreamNeo. |
| DigitalOcean Droplet | A general-purpose cloud server with published outbound-transfer terms; DigitalOcean also markets infrastructure for streaming-service builders. | Check the selected Droplet’s exact included transfer, compute capacity, and your responsibility for security, backups, supervision, and recovery. DigitalOcean pricing; DigitalOcean streaming. |
| Amazon Lightsail instance | A packaged server plan that bundles compute, storage, and data transfer. | Compare the current bundle and its allowance in your chosen region. AWS counts inbound and outbound usage toward the allowance, but bills only excess outbound transfer; overage rates vary by region. Lightsail bundles; Lightsail data transfer. |
| Hetzner Cloud server | Another cloud-server option to price for your intended data center and configuration. | Use the live pricing information rather than an old comparison. Its agreement states a 99.9% monthly availability commitment subject to terms, exclusions, and remedies; that contractual statement is not measured stream uptime. Hetzner Cloud API; Hetzner service agreement. |
| SRS on a cloud host | An open-source streaming stack available as a DigitalOcean Marketplace app, with protocol support and functions such as recording, restreaming, and transcoding. | You manage the deployment and operations. DigitalOcean’s catalog entry says it was generated 2024-03-13 and lists component versions; confirm the current image and maintenance state before relying on them. DigitalOcean SRS listing. |
DigitalOcean’s pricing page lists outbound transfer included starting at 500 GiB per month and public internet egress overage at $0.01 per GiB; the included amount depends on the Droplet plan. AWS’s current Lightsail bundle page, accessed in 2026, shows 5 TB of transfer for its $96/month 2-vCPU, 4-GB compute-optimized bundle. AWS’s cited data-transfer page lists regional outbound overage rates ranging from $0.09 to $0.17 per GB. These are page values, not a controlled, apples-to-apples comparison; check the current plan and region terms before choosing.
Estimate transfer before choosing a server
The server sends one encoder feed to YouTube; YouTube distributes the broadcast to viewers. In this arrangement, do not multiply the server’s feed transfer by the audience size. A server relaying video directly to viewers would have a different bandwidth and scaling profile.

At a continuous 14 Mbps, the feed uses approximately 4.54 decimal TB over a 30-day month, before audio and protocol overhead. This is a calculation from bitrate and duration, not a published provider statistic. It illustrates why a plan’s transfer allowance can matter as much as its CPU and memory.
- Compare that estimate with the selected plan’s outbound allowance, not just its headline monthly compute price.
- Leave headroom for audio, protocol overhead, reconnects, and any other traffic; use observed transfer once the stream is running to refine the estimate.
- A lower bitrate reduces transfer but can reduce image quality. Choose a bitrate that fits both your picture-quality needs and the server’s allowance.
- For Lightsail, check the bundle and region-specific excess-transfer rate. For Hetzner, query current plan and traffic pricing for the intended data center.
Set the encoder for YouTube
A cloud VM does not publish a broadcast by itself. An encoder—software or standalone hardware—must send the video to YouTube using the Live server URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS and provides bitrate guidance by resolution and codec in its live encoder settings guide.

| Setting | YouTube guidance or action |
|---|---|
| Connection | Use RTMPS where supported by your encoder. |
| H.264 video bitrate | YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; its listed minimums are 5 Mbps and 6 Mbps respectively. |
| Rate control | Use constant bitrate (CBR), as recommended by YouTube. |
| Keyframes | Use a two-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Codec | YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 settings, but confirm that your encoder and workflow support the chosen codec. |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VM can encode a given resolution in real time. A prerecorded loop, live camera feed, and locally generated scene can have different CPU requirements. Test the actual workload and leave capacity for the operating system and recovery processes.

Run a self-managed stream and keep it recoverable
- Choose a region and plan. Compare the server’s compute resources and included outbound transfer with your stream’s measured or estimated needs. Include headroom rather than sizing exactly to the estimate.
- Install an encoder or streaming stack. Configure it to send one feed to YouTube. A stack such as SRS can add protocol support, recording, restreaming, or transcoding, but it also adds deployment and maintenance work.
- Connect through YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions direct you to enter the Live server URL and stream key in your encoder. Keep the key secret; do not expose it in screenshots, public examples, or logs.
- Test before making the broadcast public. Confirm the encoder connects and check the stream in Live Control Room before changing its intended visibility. YouTube’s setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same archive behavior for a longer continuous broadcast; confirm current behavior and make separate recordings if an archive matters.
- Plan operations. Arrange process supervision and restart recovery, health monitoring, disk and log management, software updates, and credential security. These are responsibilities of a self-managed host; the provider does not make the stream operationally unattended just by keeping a VM running.
Compare the real cost and workload
For a VM, calculate monthly compute plus any transfer overage, then weigh that against the administration involved in encoder setup, monitoring, security, updates, and recovery. A low server price can be a poor fit if the plan lacks enough transfer or if you need a highly managed workflow. Conversely, a self-managed server can suit a technical creator who values control and is comfortable operating it.

For one example of a provider statement, DigitalOcean’s streaming page publishes a customer testimonial from Red5 Pro co-founder and CEO Chris Allen that mentions “1¢ per GB transfer!” This is marketing-page testimony, not an independent performance finding or a current, like-for-like price comparison. Do not use it as a substitute for checking the plan terms that apply to your server.
Troubleshoot common planning and continuity problems
- The stream connects, then drops or buffers. Check the server’s outbound capacity, encoder bitrate, and network headroom. Compare actual transfer and resource use with the selected plan; lower the bitrate if the feed exceeds what the connection can sustain.
- The monthly bill exceeds the server price. Review outbound transfer against the plan allowance and check overage terms for the selected provider and region. Continuous feeds can use several terabytes in a month even when YouTube handles viewer delivery.
- The encoder cannot authenticate. Verify that the Live server URL and stream key are entered correctly and that the stream key has not been revoked or exposed. Keep the key private.
- The video looks poor or the encoder cannot keep up. Revisit the codec, resolution, bitrate, and available CPU. YouTube’s bitrate figures are encoding guidance; a VM still needs enough resources for the actual encoding workload.
- The stream stays down after a restart or disconnect. Check process supervision and restart behavior, then verify that monitoring detects a failed feed. A VM’s availability does not ensure the encoder process itself restarts correctly.
- You expect a long broadcast to be archived. YouTube’s cited help page specifies automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. For a longer run, verify current YouTube behavior and create a separate recording if needed.
