If your Airtel India number is not working abroad, check the account’s international roaming (IR) service and destination eligibility first. Then troubleshoot network registration, calls and SMS, or mobile data separately. The right network, phone settings and plan entitlement depend on your destination, account and device.
Start with your Airtel account and destination
Airtel treats IR service and an IR pack as separate things. A roaming pack or in-flight pack can enable the service; postpaid customers may also enable IR without a pack, with standard rates applying. Prepaid customers using the ₹118 service activation option need an active prepaid plan and enough main balance for chargeable use. These are terms described by Airtel, not a guarantee that the same price or eligibility applies to every account today. Check your current status, destination coverage and charges in the Airtel App or on Airtel’s service terms before troubleshooting the phone.

A missing entitlement can affect more than one service. Airtel says voice and SMS may be charged at standard rates in countries not covered by a pack, while data may be blocked to prevent unintended charges. Check the current country list and your specific pack benefits on Airtel’s IR packs and FAQ page; coverage claims on that live page do not guarantee service on a particular partner network or for a particular benefit.
If your Airtel phone has no network abroad
- Restart after landing. Airtel recommends restarting the phone once you arrive.
- Try manual network selection. In your phone’s cellular or mobile network settings, turn off automatic network selection and choose an available network. The menu name varies by phone and operating system, and no single carrier is guaranteed to work in every destination.
- Try another available network or location. Airtel suggests trying another network and moving to an open area with better reception.
- Check eligibility again. If the phone still cannot register, confirm IR service is active and your destination is covered, then contact Airtel.

If calls or texts do not work
First confirm that IR service is active for your account and that your destination and intended service are supported. On the phone, check that roaming is enabled and that international dialing is configured appropriately. Settings differ by handset, so use the device maker’s instructions rather than relying on one universal menu path. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, then retry.
If calls work but SMS does not, or the reverse, tell Airtel which service is failing. Ask support to check account provisioning and destination support instead of assuming a general phone fault. Airtel’s troubleshooting article recommends checking roaming and international-dialing settings and restarting or toggling airplane mode.

If mobile data does not work
- Confirm your entitlement. Check that your IR plan or account permits data in the country you are visiting. Airtel says data may be blocked in countries not covered by an IR plan.
- Enable data roaming. Find the data roaming control in your phone’s cellular settings and turn it on. The exact path varies by device.
- Check the Airtel APN. Confirm the Access Point Name (APN) against Airtel’s current instructions or ask support for the correct setting for your account and device. Airtel’s cited guidance says to check the APN but does not publish a universal value, so do not enter a guessed setting.
- Retry the connection. Restart the phone or toggle airplane mode, then test data again.
A data failure can be caused by plan coverage or account entitlement as well as a phone setting. Airtel’s roaming troubleshooting guidance covers data roaming and APN checks; its FAQ explains that coverage and benefits depend on the destination.

Contact Airtel with useful details
Use the help section in the Airtel App or the support options shown on Airtel’s roaming page. Airtel lists call or WhatsApp support at +91-9910099100 there. Its activation guidance lists 121 for calls in India and +91-99100-99100 for support outside India. Contact numbers and availability can change, so verify the current details on Airtel’s live pages.

When you contact support, have your destination, prepaid or postpaid status, phone model, the exact symptom, and the checks you have already tried ready. If only one service fails, say whether it is outgoing calls, incoming calls, SMS, or data; that helps distinguish a service entitlement or provisioning issue from a general registration problem.
