Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with power, Bluetooth, and audio-output checks; then retry pairing. If your AirPods still will not connect, reset them using instructions for your exact model. For charging trouble, check the case, cable, power source, and charging port. Device switching also depends on compatible Apple devices, software, and account settings.
Before troubleshooting: identify the symptom
Connection, charging, and device-switching problems can look similar, but they have different first steps. If AirPods do not appear as an audio option, check Bluetooth and pairing. If the earbuds or case have no charge, address power and charging first. If they work on one device but do not move to another, check switching requirements and select the destination manually.

Fix AirPods that won’t connect
Work from the simplest checks to pairing again. Apple’s connection guidance covers AirPods and AirPods Pro; the setup gesture depends on the case and generation. Follow Apple’s connection instructions if your model’s pairing controls differ.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Update the device you want to use. Install any available iOS, iPadOS, or macOS updates, then try connecting again.
- Check charge and Bluetooth. Put both AirPods in their case and confirm they are charging. On the iPhone, iPad, or Mac, make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Choose AirPods as the audio output. Open the device’s audio destination controls, select your AirPods if listed, and test playback.
- Pair again if needed. Keep the AirPods nearby with the case open and use the setup method for your model. Newer cases, including AirPods 4, AirPods 5, and AirPods Pro 3, have different pairing steps from older cases with a setup button on the back; use Apple’s model-specific directions rather than assuming every case has the same control.
- Reset if pairing still fails. Use Apple’s reset instructions for your AirPods model. For AirPods 1, 2, or 3 and AirPods Pro 1 or 2, Apple’s cited procedure includes closing the case for 30 seconds, forgetting the AirPods in Bluetooth settings if they appear there, then holding the setup button for about 15 seconds until the status light flashes amber and then white. Other models have different reset steps.
A reset restores custom settings, so you may need to configure them again afterward.

Fix AirPods that won’t charge
Charging depends on the case model: its connector may be Lightning or USB-C, and wireless charging is supported only by compatible cases.
- Connect the case to power. Use a working cable and power adapter compatible with your case, and check that both ends are firmly connected and the outlet works.
- Leave the AirPods and case charging for at least 15 minutes. Apple recommends this minimum charging period before checking again. Its instructions specify a Lightning or USB-C cable depending on the case model: Apple’s AirPods charging guidance.
- If using wireless charging, verify compatibility and placement. Place only a wireless-charging-compatible case on a Qi-compatible charger, with the case’s status light facing up. If the light does not respond, reposition the case. Try wired charging with a compatible cable and adapter if wireless charging still fails.
- Check the charge level. Use a paired Apple device or the case’s status light, as applicable to your model, to see whether the AirPods and case are charging.
- Inspect the charging port. Look for debris and clean it only as described in Apple’s cleaning and charging guidance. Avoid guessing at a cleaning method that could damage the case.
If charging checks do not help, you can try the model-specific reset steps above. A reset restores custom settings, so you may need to set them again.

Fix AirPods that won’t switch between devices
Automatic switching is not the same as choosing an audio destination yourself. Apple says automatic switching requires supported devices with current operating systems, the same Apple Account, and two-factor authentication. See Apple’s instructions for switching AirPods.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Confirm that the Apple devices are signed in to the same Apple Account and that two-factor authentication is enabled.
- Install available operating-system updates on the devices you want to switch between.
- Do not treat a missed automatic switch during a call or similar conversation as proof that pairing is broken; Apple notes that automatic switching should not occur during a call or similar conversation.
Choose the audio destination manually
If automatic switching does not happen, select AirPods from the audio controls on the device you want to hear. On iPhone or iPad, use AirPlay or the Now Playing audio destination control. On Mac, open Control Center, choose Bluetooth, and select AirPods. Names and control placement can vary by operating-system version.

Stop automatic switching on one device
On the device where you want to change the behavior, open the AirPods connection settings and set “Connect to This [device]” to “When Last Connected.” This disables automatic switching for that device; you can still select AirPods manually.
