If people can’t hear you when you use AirPods with a Samsung Galaxy phone, first test the phone’s built-in microphone with Bluetooth turned off. If that recording is clear, the problem is more likely in the AirPods connection, call routing, or a particular app than in the phone’s microphone itself.
AirPods can work as a Bluetooth headset with an Android phone: you can listen and talk, but Siri is unavailable. That basic compatibility does not guarantee identical controls or behavior across every AirPods model, Galaxy phone, Android version, and calling app. Apple’s pairing guidance explains the non-Apple connection.

1. Test the Samsung phone’s microphone on its own
This separates a possible phone-microphone problem from a Bluetooth-call problem.

- Disconnect the AirPods and turn Bluetooth off on the Galaxy phone.
- Open Voice Recorder or Camera and record a short sample while speaking normally.
- Play it back and check whether it is clear, distorted, or silent.
Samsung recommends this built-in recording check as part of its Galaxy microphone troubleshooting. Menu names and locations can vary by model and software. If the recording is still poor, restart the phone and repeat the test. Do not use compressed air to clean the phone’s microphone; Samsung warns that it can damage the device.

If the recording is poor with Bluetooth off
The issue is not limited to the AirPods call path. Continue with Samsung’s troubleshooting for a Galaxy microphone problem rather than changing AirPods settings first.
If the recording is clear
The phone’s built-in microphone works in that test. Reconnect the AirPods and check the call connection, routing, and app before concluding that the phone microphone is faulty.

2. Compare calls and apps
With the AirPods connected, make a brief test call. If possible, try another calling app as well. Note whether the other person can hear you in both, neither, or only one.
- Only one app fails: The problem may be specific to that app or its settings. Check that the call is not muted, then update the app; if needed, reinstall it.
- Calls fail across apps: Reconnect the AirPods and check whether the connection is stable. If the phone’s standalone recording remains clear, the failure is on the Bluetooth-call path rather than evidence by itself of a broken built-in microphone.
- The result changes between calls: Record which app and call context works. Bluetooth audio behavior can depend on the device, software, and app, so one successful call does not establish that every app will behave the same way.
Samsung advises updating apps when a problem is isolated to an app as part of its Galaxy microphone guidance.

3. Check the AirPods connection
If the saved Bluetooth connection seems unreliable, disconnect and reconnect the AirPods from the Galaxy phone’s Bluetooth settings. If that does not help, remove the saved pairing and pair them again.
To pair, enable Bluetooth on the phone, put the AirPods into pairing mode for their specific generation, then select them in the Bluetooth device list. The pairing-mode gesture differs by model: several generations use the case setup button, while newer case designs use a double tap on the front of the case. Follow Apple’s instructions for pairing AirPods with a non-Apple device for the model you have.

4. See whether Galaxy Mic mode is available
Some Galaxy phones offer Mic mode during supported calls. Samsung’s documented path is to open Quick Settings during the call and select Mic mode. The available modes are:
- Standard: Uses minimal filtering.
- Voice focus: Increases filtering to emphasize the caller’s voice.
- Full spectrum: Captures voice and background sounds.
Availability is limited to select devices and supported call contexts, including particular Samsung Phone or Contacts calls and some VoIP situations using speakerphone. Samsung says that if Mic mode is unavailable in a supported app or call context, the device may not support the feature. Its Mic mode instructions describe Galaxy call processing; they do not establish that the setting changes which AirPods microphone is used. The absence of Mic mode alone does not indicate a fault.

5. Check simple call and Bluetooth conditions
Samsung’s call-troubleshooting advice for Galaxy Buds—not AirPods—flags connection strength, wearing position, settings, surroundings, updates, and accidental muting as possible contributors. These are sensible low-risk checks for a Bluetooth call, but that documentation does not prove that AirPods have the same controls or failure modes. - Keep the phone nearby and retry the call.
- Check that the AirPods are seated normally.
- Confirm that the call app is not muted.
- Disconnect and reconnect the AirPods, then try the call again.
Can you change which AirPod microphone Samsung uses?
Apple documents choosing the microphone for AirPods on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Its documentation does not confirm that the same left, right, or automatic microphone control is available on Samsung Android. Apple’s AirPods settings guide covers the controls it documents for those Apple devices; do not assume a matching Samsung menu exists.
When to contact support
If the phone’s recording is distorted or silent with Bluetooth off, follow Samsung support for a Galaxy microphone problem. If that recording is clear but calls fail only while using AirPods, note the AirPods generation, Galaxy model, Android and One UI versions, and affected calling app before seeking device support. Those details help distinguish a phone recording issue from a connection or app-specific call problem.
