When an AI assistant forgets a rule, first work out where it was supposed to remember it: later in the same chat, in a new chat, or only inside a particular project. Then check whether the rule is stored as an instruction, memory, chat history, or project knowledge—and whether that feature is enabled for your account. These are different mechanisms, and none guarantees that every instruction will apply in every context.
First, pinpoint when the instruction disappears
The failure location usually points to the fix. A rule missed in the next reply may need clearer wording or a correction in the conversation. A rule missing in a new chat may be saved only in the original conversation. A rule that works elsewhere but not in a project may be outside that project’s context—or stored in the wrong place.

- Later in the same conversation: Restate the specific missed requirement and ask for a revised answer. For a complicated request, split the work into steps and provide the context needed for each.
- In a new conversation: Check whether the rule is in an account-wide instruction or saved memory, rather than only in the old chat. Confirm that personalization is enabled and available on your account.
- Only in a project or workspace: Check the project’s instructions and knowledge, as well as its memory scope. Project-specific context may not carry into other chats.
- In a temporary or private chat: Check whether that chat is designed to use or update saved personalization. Temporary-chat behavior differs by product.
Ask the assistant what context or information it used, then inspect the product’s memory or personalization controls if available. A summary or source list can help identify a mistaken or missing detail, but it may not expose every factor behind a response.

Put each instruction in the right place
“Memory” and “instructions” are related but not interchangeable. OpenAI describes custom instructions as direct guidance about what ChatGPT should know and how it should respond. Memory can use relevant information that develops across conversations and other available sources. Claude similarly distinguishes account-wide profile preferences, project instructions, and styles. Choose a location based on how broadly the rule should apply.

Check the assistant you use
ChatGPT
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory and check the relevant memory controls. ChatGPT’s saved memory and reference to chat history are distinct ways of using prior context; custom instructions provide direct guidance.
- Ask ChatGPT what it remembers about the relevant preference. Where source references are displayed, inspect them and correct the source itself. OpenAI says the memory summary is high-level and may omit details or sources, and personalization sources may not show every factor shaping a response. See OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT guide.
- If the issue is in a project, check whether it uses default or project-only memory and whether memory is enabled in the account or workspace. Project-only memory limits the project to its own context: project chats cannot draw on outside conversations, and outside chats cannot draw on that project. See OpenAI’s Projects in ChatGPT guide.
- If you started a temporary chat, check its personalization choice before starting another. OpenAI says temporary chats do not create or update memories.
Deleting a chat alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory created from it. OpenAI says removal may require deleting the memory and the chat where it was shared, along with copies in other sources such as files or connected apps. Updates and deletions can take time to propagate; OpenAI says logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. Gemini
For personalization based on past chats, Google currently lists these requirements: you must be at least 18, use a personal Google Account rather than a work, school, or supervised account, and have Keep Activity on. Google says the feature is unavailable in some experiences, including Gems and Live chats. Open Settings & help > Personal Intelligence to check its controls; labels and availability can change, so consult Google’s past-chat personalization help page for your account and region.

You can ask Gemini, “Did you use any info from past chats?” To correct remembered information, correct Gemini directly with Memory enabled. To remove information, Google says to delete the relevant chats from Gemini Apps Activity. If connected-app content is involved, delete the relevant chats and disconnect the app; doing only one can leave another source available.

Microsoft 365 Copilot
Open Settings > Personalization and review Enhanced personalization, Custom instructions, Saved memories, and Chat history. Microsoft documents that an organization-level or user-level control can prevent Copilot from applying custom instructions without deleting those instructions. A work or school account may be managed by an administrator, who may need to check whether enhanced personalization is enabled. See Microsoft’s Copilot personalization and memory guidance.

Microsoft says saved memories remain until explicitly deleted, and deleting a chat does not delete saved memories generated from it. Chat-history details are dynamic; Microsoft says details from deleted source chats are removed within seven days. Use the controls described on Microsoft’s help page to manage the relevant source.
Claude
Match the control to the scope: profile preferences are account-wide, project instructions apply to chats in that project, and styles affect how responses are formatted and delivered. For reusable project material, add it to project knowledge and save the instructions in the project. Anthropic says project context is not shared across chats unless it is added to the knowledge base; see How can I create and manage projects?

Past-chat search is rolling out, and Anthropic lists plan availability. If the feature appears on your account, you can ask Claude to search prior discussions; otherwise, include the needed context in the current chat or project. See Anthropic’s personalization features guide.
Make the instruction easier to follow
Use a short, explicit request that tells the assistant what to do and how to handle missing information. Put stable, general preferences in account-wide controls; keep project-only requirements and reference material in that project.
- Task: State the action you want.
- Context: Provide the relevant background or point to material the assistant can access.
- Constraints: Name limits, exclusions, or required terminology.
- Output: Specify the format, length, or structure.
- Uncertainty: Say what to do if a fact or source is missing.
For example: “For this project, use the attached terminology list. Keep answers under 200 words and use a numbered list. If a needed fact is not in the provided material, say what is missing rather than guessing.” If the assistant misses a rule, name the exact requirement it missed and request a revision. Anthropic’s prompting guidance recommends clear, specific requests, adequate context, substeps for complex tasks, and follow-up feedback. These practices improve clarity, but they cannot enable an unavailable setting or supply context the assistant cannot access.
