What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose overnight incontinence protection by matching its style to the wearer’s mobility and changing needs, its absorbency to the person’s actual leakage pattern, and its size to the specific product’s chart. A secure, comfortable fit and features designed to contain leakage while lying down matter as much as the absorbency label. No product can be assumed to last the entire night without a change.
Choose a style the wearer can manage
Protective underwear is a pull-on garment that resembles regular underwear. Tab-style briefs wrap around the wearer and fasten at the sides. Neither style is automatically more absorbent; compare the specifications of the particular products.

Pull-on protective underwear
A pull-on may be a practical choice when the wearer can manage dressing and toileting with the garment. Consider whether the person can lower and raise it independently and whether it is comfortable to change during the night.

Tab-style briefs
A tab-style brief may be easier for a caregiver to change, including when the wearer is lying down. Consider the wearer’s mobility and dexterity, who will assist with changes, and which fastening style allows a secure fit without making care difficult.

Match absorbency to the actual overnight need
Start with the amount and pattern of leakage, then compare the product’s stated absorbency and whether it is designed for nighttime use. The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN) recommends disposable briefs with additional absorbent capacity designed for nighttime use in specified moderate-to-heavy situations; that is not a universal recommendation for every wearer or product. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) notes that every absorbent product has a saturation point. CMS guidance on incontinence supplies.
Absorbency labels alone do not establish which garment will contain leakage best for a particular person. Compare products for the same wearer and situation, including absorbent capacity, where the absorbent area sits, leg and waist elastics, and leakage barriers.

Use the exact product’s sizing chart
Measure as the manufacturer directs and use the chart for the specific garment. Brand sizes are not interchangeable. Tranquility’s fit tool asks for waist and hip measurements, and TENA’s caregiver guidance also points to waist and hip measurements and the product chart. If the product gaps, shifts, or feels tight, check the measurements and fit guidance rather than assuming that a higher absorbency level will solve the problem.

Check containment and design for lying down
Compare the location of the absorbent surface, leg and waist elastics, leakage barriers, and how the garment sits when the wearer is lying down. Placement can differ by product: TENA describes one overnight product with absorbency positioned in the back for lying down. Treat that as a feature of that product, not a guarantee about overnight underwear as a category. TENA overnight underwear.
Before choosing, consider whether the product’s construction matches the wearer’s leakage pattern and usual sleeping position. A product description can identify design features, but it cannot promise that an individual garment will prevent every leak.

Consider comfort and skin protection
WOCN identifies comfort, odor control, skin protection, breathability, and appearance as relevant selection considerations. CMS describes skin risks associated with persistent moisture exposure. A comfortable garment that supports the person’s care routine is preferable to choosing on absorbency alone. Persistent skin problems warrant appropriate clinical evaluation; changing products is not a substitute for it. WOCN guide to incontinence-associated dermatitis; CMS guidance.
Plan changes around the person, not a fixed number of hours
There is no universal change interval established for overnight products. WOCN says optimal timing varies with elimination and sleep-wake patterns, the absorbent product’s properties, and the wearer’s comfort when wet. The wearer’s needs and the product reaching capacity should guide the routine, rather than an assumed all-night wear time. WOCN guidance.

WOCN describes booster pads or absorbent wraps as possible adjuncts when containment is inadequate, not as items to use solely for caregiver convenience. Check that an adjunct is appropriate for the product and situation; it is not a universal fix for leaks. WOCN guidance on incontinence care.
Compare products for the same wearer and scenario
When comparing two products, use the same wearer, leakage pattern, and overnight routine. Check these factors side by side:
- Pull-on or tab style, and who can manage changes.
- Stated absorbency and whether the product is intended for overnight use.
- Measurements requested and the product’s own size chart.
- Absorbent placement, elastics, barriers, and fit while lying down.
- Comfort, breathability, skin considerations, noise, and bulk.
