Stop the capture or sharing session in the app that started it. If the outline remains, check Snipping Tool and other overlay apps, then try restarting Windows Explorer as a last troubleshooting step.
Why Windows shows a yellow border
Windows Graphics Capture can display a system-managed chooser for selecting a screen or app. When capture starts, Windows adds a small yellow border around the visual being captured as a reminder that it is being shared or may be recorded. Microsoft describes the border as a capture-status cue, so its presence alone is not evidence of screen hardware damage. Microsoft’s Windows Developer Blog explains the behavior.

The outline can be associated with different capture workflows, so do not assume every yellow border means one particular app is recording. Note what action makes it appear, what area it outlines, and which capture or overlay apps are running.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStop the capture or sharing session first
- If it appears during a meeting or screen share: stop sharing from the conferencing app that started it.
- If it appears during a recording: stop the recording in the recording app. For Xbox Game Bar, Microsoft documents Windows key + Alt + R to start or stop a recording on Windows 10 and Windows 11. See Microsoft’s Xbox Game Bar recording guide.
- If it appears while capturing a snip: finish or cancel the Snipping Tool capture. Microsoft’s current support guide documents Windows key + Shift + S for a screenshot snip and Windows key + Shift + R for a video snip. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guide.
If Snipping Tool triggers the outline
When the yellow border appears specifically during a Snipping Tool operation, look in Snipping Tool settings for Show snip outline and turn it off if the option is present. A Microsoft Q&A response suggests this setting, but it is community guidance and availability can vary by app or Windows version; it is not a universal control for every Windows capture border. See the Microsoft Q&A discussion.

Windows also documents an API option for borderless capture, but the capturing application must request user consent for it. If that consent is declined, the border remains during capture. This is an app-managed, consent-based option—not a Windows setting that removes every capture outline. Microsoft’s API documentation describes the access request.

Check desktop overlays
Close overlay utilities that are running, then see whether the outline disappears. In one Microsoft Q&A report, a user said quitting PowerToys cleared a border and speculated that ZoomIt was involved. That is an individual report, not confirmation that either program is the cause in other cases. If installed, closing PowerToys is a reasonable diagnostic test. Read the Microsoft Q&A report.

Restart Windows Explorer as a troubleshooting attempt
If the border appears stuck after Snipping Tool has closed, one Microsoft Q&A response reports that restarting Windows Explorer resolved that user’s lingering outline. This is an anecdotal remedy, not a guaranteed fix:
Recommended Free Tools
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find Windows Explorer in the process list. If needed, choose More details to show the full list.
- Select Windows Explorer, then choose Restart task (or Restart, depending on the Task Manager version). The taskbar and desktop may briefly disappear and return.
The reported remedy appears in the Microsoft Q&A discussion.

Use the trigger to narrow down the cause
- Only during screen sharing or recording: stop the session in the app that began it; check Game Bar or your conferencing/recording software if you are unsure which app is active.
- Only during a Snipping Tool capture: check whether Show snip outline is available in Snipping Tool settings.
- Still visible after capture tools close: close running desktop overlays as a test; if it remains, consider restarting Windows Explorer.
Microsoft’s support pages cover Game Bar and Snipping Tool workflows on Windows 10 and Windows 11, but exact border controls are not established as identical across every Windows build or app version. If the steps do not match your screen, identify the action that triggers the border and the app and Windows version involved before looking for a version-specific setting.
