Android may be getting a voice-triggered way to start Emergency SOS, but it is not a feature users can rely on today. Android Authority reported on October 1, 2026, that strings in a Google Personal Safety app build point to a possible hands-free option. Google has not announced it, confirmed how it would work, or said when it might arrive.
What the reported hands-free SOS feature might do
Android Authority found the strings “Add hands-free way to start,” “Say ‘yes’ to continue,” and “Say ‘cancel’ to dismiss Emergency SOS” in Personal Safety app build 2026.09.16.982745548. They suggest a voice-based activation flow with spoken confirmation and cancellation, but code strings do not confirm that the feature will launch or describe its final behavior. Android Authority’s report says the feature was not available to users when published on October 1, 2026.

The report interprets an animation as indicating that a person might say “Help” three times to begin the process. That is the outlet’s reading of the animation, not a Google-confirmed wake phrase or instruction. Do not assume that saying “Help” will contact emergency services.
How to start Emergency SOS on Android now
Google’s current instructions cover Android 12 and later: press the phone’s power button five times or more. Depending on your settings, you may need to hold inside the red circle, or the phone may begin actions after a countdown. The exact options and labels can vary by device, so check your own phone’s Safety & emergency settings.

- Open your phone’s Settings and find Safety & emergency. The path and labels may vary by device.
- Open Emergency SOS and review the setup options and actions enabled on your phone.
- If you choose automatic actions, review the countdown and any alarm setting. If you choose confirmation, learn the on-screen action needed to continue.
- In an emergency, press the power button five or more times and follow the prompt shown on your phone.
Google says Emergency SOS does not work in airplane mode or while Battery Saver is on. Sharing your real-time location with emergency contacts requires Wi-Fi or mobile internet. Google’s Emergency SOS instructions explain setup and behavior.
What Emergency SOS can do—and what it depends on
Depending on your setup and device, Emergency SOS can call emergency services, share information with emergency contacts, and record video. These actions are configurable; having the feature does not mean every action is enabled. Review what your phone is set to do before you need it, including whether it waits for your confirmation or proceeds after a countdown. Google also documents the option to enable an alarm sound. The Android help page lists the available setup choices.

Emergency Location Service (ELS) is a separate location mechanism, not a voice trigger. Android’s documentation says, “ELS only sends an emergency location if a user calls or texts an emergency number from their device.” It determines location on the device and sends it directly to emergency services; it does not establish that a voice command can start SOS. Android’s ELS information explains the service.

Google documents Assistant commands for Emergency Sharing and Safety Check on Pixel phones. Those features can help share information with chosen contacts or arrange a safety check, but Google’s instructions do not say that Assistant starts an Emergency SOS call to emergency services. Treat contact-sharing tools and an emergency-services call as distinct functions. Google’s Pixel safety-feature instructions describe the Assistant options.

What is still unknown about hands-free SOS
The reported app strings do not establish a release date, eligible devices, geographic availability, or a minimum Personal Safety app or Android version for the proposed voice feature. Google has not confirmed that “Help” is the trigger, or that the quoted “yes” and “cancel” prompts will appear in a released product. Until Google documents and ships it, the power-button workflow remains the documented way to start Emergency SOS.
