Do not repeatedly click Update now on a live store. WordPress warns that auto-updates can fail, and its update guidance says to back up the database and files before upgrading. The sequence below is designed to restore access with the smallest possible outage and to leave you with a reversible recovery point.

First response: protect the store before changing anything
When an update fails, the priority is not to make the dashboard green; it is to prevent a partial upgrade from turning into lost orders, mismatched code, or an unrecoverable outage. Put the store into a controlled state before troubleshooting.
- Pause customer-facing transactions. Use your maintenance or checkout-disable procedure, or temporarily place the site behind a maintenance page. If customers can still submit orders while files are being replaced, an order may be written while the payment or product code is inconsistent.
- Make a complete backup. Save a database dump and all WordPress files, including
wp-content/uploads, plugins, themes, and configuration files. Keep the backup outside the web root and record when it was made. A database-only export cannot restore missing plugin files, and a files-only copy cannot restore orders or settings. - Do not overwrite the only copy. If your host creates snapshots, retain the pre-update snapshot. If you use a backup service, confirm that you can download and restore the archive rather than assuming that a job marked “complete” is usable.
- Write down the current state. Record the WooCommerce version, WordPress version, PHP version, active theme, recently changed extensions, the timestamp, and whether the failure happened during download, unpacking, activation, or the first page load afterward.
WordPress’s Dashboard Updates documentation puts the rule plainly: “Important: before upgrading, please backup your database and files.” Treat that as a prerequisite for every retry, not as advice reserved for major releases.

Identify what “failed” means
The visible symptom determines the safest next action. Capture the complete dashboard notice or error log entry before refreshing the page; a browser refresh can hide the original message.

Save the HTTP status, PHP fatal text, request URL if shown, and the extension or theme version involved. “Update failed” is a symptom, not a diagnosis; the surrounding details distinguish a download failure from a fatal compatibility error.

During an update WordPress creates a hidden file named .maintenance in the site’s root directory. If the process stops before it removes that file, visitors can continue to see the scheduled-maintenance message even though the updater is no longer running.
- Confirm that no other legitimate update is still running. Check the hosting control panel, active deployment jobs, and any second administrator session.
- Connect with SFTP/FTP or open the host’s file manager. Use the directory containing
wp-admin,wp-includes, andwp-content; that is the WordPress root. - Enable display of hidden files if the file manager hides dot-files.
- Delete only the root-level
.maintenancefile. Do not delete similarly named files inside plugins or themes. - Load the home page and
/wp-admin/in a private browser window. If either still fails, move to error isolation rather than recreating the file.
WordPress’s failed-auto-upgrade guidance and its Dashboard Updates documentation both identify deleting this root file as the remedy when the maintenance screen persists. Removing it does not repair incomplete plugin files, so continue with the verification steps below before enabling checkout.
Regain dashboard access after a fatal error
A fatal error normally identifies the offending file and function. Read the first fatal entry, noting the plugin or theme directory in the path. If the dashboard cannot load, disable that component without deleting it.

Disable a plugin with FTP or a file manager
- Open
wp-content/plugins/. - Rename the suspected plugin directory, for example from
example-extensiontoexample-extension.disabled. Renaming preserves its files and prevents WordPress from loading it. - Reload
/wp-admin/. If access returns, leave the extension disabled while you check its compatibility and version requirements. - After the site is stable, restore the original directory name only when you are ready to test a compatible release.
Disable the active theme
If the fatal path points to the theme, rename that theme’s directory under wp-content/themes/. WordPress will fall back to an available default theme. This is a diagnostic step: the fallback may change layout and shop templates, so keep checkout paused and record the original theme before proceeding.

From the WordPress installation directory, run:
wp plugin deactivate plugin-folder-nameReplace plugin-folder-name with the directory name, not the display name. If the command reports that WordPress cannot load, use the FTP rename method or add the appropriate maintenance and debugging options supplied by your host. Do not run bulk deactivation commands on a live store unless you understand the effect on payment, shipping, tax, and security extensions.
Check compatibility before attempting another WooCommerce update
WooCommerce documentation states: “An outdated extension is the most common cause of this error.” Extensions that call WooCommerce functions, hooks, or database structures can fail immediately when WooCommerce changes, even if the WooCommerce package itself downloaded correctly.
Review the extension and theme set
- List every extension updated in the same window as WooCommerce, including payment, shipping, tax, subscriptions, product feeds, and performance tools.
- Check each extension’s stated WooCommerce and WordPress compatibility and its minimum PHP version. Update one component at a time, starting with the extension named in the fatal trace.
- Test with a default WordPress theme if a third-party theme may be calling WooCommerce functions incorrectly. A theme test separates template or hook problems from plugin code.
- Look for duplicate copies of an extension, abandoned versions, or a premium extension whose license prevented a complete download.
Do not “solve” a compatibility error by deleting the extension’s data tables or orders. First preserve the backup, identify a compatible release, and test on staging when possible.
Turn on useful logging without exposing errors publicly
Use your host’s PHP error log and WordPress debugging facilities to capture the fatal file, line number, and stack trace. Keep display of PHP errors disabled for visitors; logs should be readable only by administrators. After diagnosis, turn temporary debugging back off or rotate the log so it does not expose customer or configuration data.

Fix download, connection, permission, and timeout failures
WordPress identifies connection glitches, interrupted internet access, and incorrect file permissions as causes of failed automatic upgrades. A request can also time out while downloading, unpacking, or copying a large package.
When the package will not download
- Confirm that the server can make outbound HTTPS requests and resolve DNS. A local browser connection does not prove that the web server can reach the update service.
- Check firewall, security-plugin, proxy, and host egress rules for blocked update requests.
- Verify that the server clock and certificate chain are valid; an incorrect clock can make TLS validation fail.
- Retry from Dashboard > Updates only after the connection problem is fixed. Repeated retries can leave confusing temporary files and consume resources.
When WordPress asks for connection information
The updater normally needs to write into the WordPress directory. If files were copied by a different system user, WordPress may not own them and will request FTP credentials. Ask the host to correct ownership and directory permissions for the WordPress process. Avoid setting every file to world-writable: that hides the underlying ownership problem and increases the attack surface.
When the request times out
Check PHP memory limits, maximum execution time, web-server request limits, and available disk space. A package can download successfully but fail while it is unpacked or copied. The relevant limit must be raised at the server or PHP configuration level by someone with access; changing an unrelated WordPress setting will not extend a web-server timeout. After limits are corrected, use a single controlled retry and inspect the log if it fails again.
Retry safely: dashboard, FTP, or WP-CLI
Choose one method based on the failure and the access you have. The comparison below assumes you have a complete backup and can restore it.

Retry from the dashboard
- Confirm the backup, free disk space, corrected permissions, and a compatible extension version.
- Open Dashboard > Updates.
- Update only the affected extension, not every pending plugin, theme, and core component at once.
- Wait for the success result; do not close the request while files are being unpacked.
- Clear caches only after the update reports success, then test the store using the verification checklist.
Replace the extension through FTP
WooCommerce documents manual upload as a fallback when automatic updates are unavailable. Download the correct package from the extension’s legitimate source, verify that it matches the intended version, and keep the archive outside the public web root.

- Put the store in maintenance mode and confirm the backup.
- Rename the existing extension directory to a dated backup name rather than deleting it.
- Upload and extract the new extension directory into
wp-content/plugins/, preserving the expected folder name. - Confirm that the web server user owns the new files and that permissions match neighboring WordPress plugins.
- Open the dashboard and activate the extension only after checking the error log. If activation triggers a fatal error, rename the new directory and restore the previous one.
Do not upload a plugin ZIP into wp-content/plugins/ and assume WordPress will unpack it; the directory structure must match what the installer expects.
Update with WP-CLI
For a plugin identified by its slug, run:
wp plugin update <plugin>WP-CLI reports the maintenance-mode transition, download, unpacking, installation, removal of the old version, and completion status. Save that output with the timestamp. If it reports a download or filesystem error, fix that underlying condition instead of forcing a second command. Run one plugin update at a time when diagnosing a failure.

WordPress plugin and theme auto-updates run through WordPress Cron. A store can therefore update successfully when started manually while scheduled updates quietly fail.
- Open Tools > Site Health.
- Review the status and tests for scheduled events, Cron, loopback requests, REST API availability, and HTTPS.
- Investigate failed or overdue events with the host. Common blockers include disabled or redirected loopback requests, a server-level Cron job that is not running, authentication rules, and fatal errors during the scheduled task.
- Until Cron is reliable, disable unattended updates for the affected extension and perform supervised updates during a maintenance window.
Fixing Cron does not repair a partially installed extension; it only prevents the same update mechanism from failing again.
When and how to roll back
Rollback is a recovery tool, not the first response to every warning. WordPress 6.3 introduced rollback behavior for failed manual plugin and theme updates when the installer returns a WP_Error; later rollback work also checks for a PHP fatal error and restores the previous version. That protection has limits: it cannot recreate files that were never backed up, and it does not guarantee that a database migration can be reversed.
Use an automatic rollback only after checking the result
If WordPress reports that it restored the previous version, verify the actual plugin directory, version shown in the dashboard, front-end pages, checkout, and logs. Keep the backup made before the attempt. A rollback message is not proof that all database changes or caches have been undone.
Restore a known-good backup for a full-store failure
- Clone or restore the backup to staging first, if your hosting setup allows it.
- Confirm that the staging copy contains the expected database, uploads, plugin files, theme, and configuration.
- Test login, product pages, cart, checkout, payment callbacks, order creation, email generation, refunds, and scheduled actions.
- Plan a maintenance window, take one final backup of the damaged production state, and restore the known-good files and database together.
- After restoration, block unattended updates for the failing component until its compatibility issue is understood.
WordPress warns that reverting can create database-structure complications and that rollback is nearly impossible without complete pre-upgrade files and database backups. Never restore only the plugin directory when the newer code may already have changed the database schema.

Verify the store before reopening checkout
Remove the maintenance page only after the site passes a focused smoke test. Use a private browser session and, where possible, a low-value test order in a non-production gateway or staging environment.
- Log in as an administrator and open WooCommerce > Status to check the reported versions, database notices, and scheduled actions.
- Load a product page, category, search, variable product, coupon, and stock-limited product.
- Add items to the cart, change quantities, apply shipping and tax rules, and confirm totals.
- Run checkout through the approved test path; verify payment-return and webhook behavior rather than stopping at the “order received” page.
- Open the resulting order in the dashboard, confirm stock reduction, customer email generation, and order notes.
- Check account login, password reset, refunds, subscriptions or recurring actions if those features are installed.
- Inspect PHP, web-server, WooCommerce, and Cron logs for new errors, then clear only the caches that could serve stale PHP or template files.
- Monitor the first real transactions and scheduled actions after reopening. Keep the pre-update backup until the observation period is complete.
When to stop troubleshooting yourself
Escalate to a qualified WooCommerce maintenance professional or agency when you cannot regain administrator access, identify the failing extension, verify file ownership, or prove that backups can be restored. Provide the technician with the exact error text, timestamps, versions, update method, backup location, recent file changes, and the steps already attempted. Do not send customer data, payment credentials, or unrestricted production access when a redacted log or temporary least-privilege account will answer the question.
