A Minecraft server usually tells you which YAML file failed, and often gives a line and column. Start there: preserve the complete first error, identify whether it names a plugin config.yml, bukkit.yml, spigot.yml, or a world configuration file, then inspect the reported line and the mapping immediately above it. Back up the file before making one small correction.

YAML failures fall into two different classes. A syntax error prevents the file from being parsed at all; a schema or semantic error means the YAML is valid but a plugin or server does not recognize a key, value type, capitalization, or nesting level. The repair is different for each, so do not treat every startup failure as an indentation problem.

What a YAML error means on a Minecraft server
Paper and Spigot use YAML in several parts of a server installation. YAML is a tree-like key: value format: indentation shows which keys belong under another key. For plugins, the usual file is a generated config.yml inside that plugin’s directory. Server-level settings are commonly held in bukkit.yml, spigot.yml, and Paper’s world configuration files.
When the server loads one of these files, it first has to parse the text into a data structure. A missing colon, a tab, or a key at the wrong indentation can make that step fail. Only after parsing can the plugin or server check whether the names and value types are supported.

Paper’s source reports invalid spigot.yml loading as an InvalidConfigurationException with the message Could not load spigot.yml, please correct your syntax errors. That message identifies a syntax problem in that file, not necessarily the line where the original typo was made.
Capture the exact failure before editing
Stop the error from being overwritten
Automated restart loops can bury the useful first exception under repeated startup output. Temporarily stop the loop, pause the server process, or save the console log so you can read the first complete load attempt. Keep the original log even after the server starts; it records which component tried to read the file.
Record five details
- The exact filename, including its path relative to the server or plugin directory.
- The line number and column number, if the parser supplied them.
- The complete exception text, including the first YAML message and its surrounding stack trace.
- The plugin, world, or server component named near the failure.
- Whether the failure occurred during a full startup, a plugin reload, or another supported configuration operation.
A parser often reports the point where the structure becomes impossible, not the character that introduced the mistake. If line 42 is flagged, inspect line 42 and the preceding mapping, list item, quote, or bracket. Also read several following lines; a misplaced parent key can make a later line look guilty.
Locate the right configuration file
Plugin configuration
If the stack trace names a plugin, open that plugin’s directory and locate its config.yml or another YAML file named in the error. YAML is the default configuration format described in Paper’s plugin documentation, but individual plugins may create additional files for messages, permissions, menus, or storage.
Do not assume that every config.yml belongs to the same plugin. Use the directory name and the component in the stack trace to establish ownership before changing a key. A setting copied from another plugin can be perfectly valid YAML while being meaningless to the plugin you are editing.
Server-level files
For failures that occur before a plugin is identified, check the server-level files named by the log. Paper documents bukkit.yml and spigot.yml separately, and world-specific Paper configuration may be stored with the relevant world data. Edit the exact file named by the exception rather than replacing every YAML file in the server directory.

Metadata is a separate case
plugin.yml is metadata, not an ordinary plugin setting file. Spigot’s documentation specifies required attributes and states that attribute names are case-sensitive. Paper’s PluginDescriptionFile API also exposes syntax failures while reading it. If the error names plugin.yml, check required metadata, capitalization, and the plugin’s expected format instead of applying advice for a normal user-editable config.yml.
Back up the file and preserve a known-good baseline
Make a copy before touching the original. Include a timestamp in the copy’s name or commit the file to version control, and preserve the original error log. If the plugin generated the file, keep a copy of the untouched default as well. That default shows accepted key names, indentation, list structure, and value types for the installed plugin version.
Back up only after stopping writes to the file. A plugin that is still running may rewrite its configuration during shutdown or a reload, causing your copy and the active file to diverge. If you cannot stop the server immediately, copy the file first, then perform a clean stop before editing.
Repair YAML structure systematically
Use indentation to model the tree
In YAML, a child key is indented beneath its parent. Sibling keys use the same indentation. Paper’s documentation describes this tree-like relationship; the following minimal shape is safe:

sibling: trueThe number of spaces is less important than consistency within a block. A child aligned with parent becomes a new top-level key. A sibling indented one space farther than its neighbor becomes a child of the wrong key. Use an editor that can display whitespace and convert tabs to spaces.
Check the reported line and its parent
- Open the exact file named by the log.
- Jump to the reported line and column.
- Compare that line’s indentation with the keys beside it.
- Move upward to the nearest parent key ending in a colon and verify that each child is indented consistently beneath it.
- Read downward until the next top-level key or the end of the block, looking for a second indentation change.
Fix the smallest structural defect first. Reformatting an entire file at once makes it difficult to know which change removed or introduced the error.

Replace tabs with spaces
Tabs are a common cause of found character 't' that cannot start any token. Replace tabs throughout the affected block, not just the visible line, because a hidden tab in a parent or sibling can continue to break parsing. Configure the editor to insert spaces when you press Tab, then inspect the surrounding block again.
Verify colons and scalar values
Mappings need a colon between the key and value. A missing colon can produce could not find expected ':', while an extra colon inside an unquoted value can produce mapping values are not allowed here. If a value contains punctuation that the parser could interpret as YAML syntax, quote it using the style already present in the generated file.

A list has a different shape from a mapping; do not convert one into the other merely to silence an error. Preserve the structure shown by the plugin’s default file.
Look for duplicate or misplaced keys
Duplicate keys can be rejected by one parser and silently overwrite an earlier value in another. Search the relevant block for a second occurrence of the same key. A value on the wrong level can parse successfully but be ignored, so compare both indentation and spelling with the default.
Treat comments and special values carefully
A comment begins with a comment character only when the parser recognizes it in that position. A character intended as part of a message, URL, or other value may need quoting. Preserve comments supplied by the plugin, and copy the plugin’s quoting style when adding a value. If a value contains a colon, bracket, or other punctuation, quote it rather than relying on parser-specific behavior.

These messages are clues, not guarantees. The same typo can shift the parser’s failure point, so use the exact line and column together with the surrounding structure.

Separate valid YAML from a valid plugin configuration
Check names and capitalization
Once the file parses, compare every changed key with the documentation for the installed plugin or server version. Spigot’s plugin.yml attributes are case-sensitive, and ordinary configuration readers often treat key capitalization as significant as well. Spawn-Rate, spawn-rate, and spawn_rate may be three different names, even though YAML accepts all three as text.
Check nesting and value types
A setting can be spelled correctly but placed under the wrong parent. Confirm whether the expected value is a Boolean such as true, a number, a string, or a list. A quoted number may be read as text, and a single item may not be accepted where the plugin expects a list. Use the generated default as the authoritative shape for that installed version.
Check version compatibility
Configuration keys change as plugins and server software evolve. Do not copy a key from a guide written for another plugin release, Minecraft version, or server implementation without checking the matching documentation. For bukkit.yml and spigot.yml, use the corresponding Paper reference page. For a plugin’s config.yml, use that plugin’s version-matched documentation and its freshly generated default.
Validate one controlled change at a time
- Save a backup and write down the single logical change you intend to make.
- Save the edited file without changing unrelated formatting.
- Restart the server or use the plugin’s documented reload workflow. Do not assume that a generic reload command will safely re-read every file.
- Read the complete log from the load attempt, including warnings after the first successful parse.
- Confirm both outcomes: the file parses, and the plugin or server accepts and applies the setting.
- Only then make the next change.
A successful startup proves only that the parser accepted the document. If the feature still behaves as before, look for a schema warning, a wrong nesting level, or a value type the plugin does not support.
When to regenerate defaults or roll back
Use a rollback when the last edit is known
If the error began immediately after one change, restore the backup, restart using the supported workflow, and reapply that change in a smaller form. Keep the failed copy separately so you can compare the exact difference. This is safer than trying to repair several intertwined indentation changes at once.
Regenerate a plugin configuration when structure is unclear
If the file has accumulated edits from several versions and you cannot identify the break, stop the server, move the active file out of the way, and let the plugin generate a fresh default according to its documented procedure. Do not delete the only copy. Reapply settings one at a time, checking each key against the new file and the installed plugin version.
Do not regenerate server files casually
bukkit.yml, spigot.yml, and world configuration files may contain intentional server-wide or world-specific choices. Preserve them, compare them with a known-good copy, and regenerate only when the server software’s documentation supports that recovery path. A default file can remove deliberate performance, gameplay, or world settings.
Choose the recovery path by symptom

Worked examples of safe corrections
Child aligned with its parent
This structure makes timeout a top-level key rather than a child of connection:

retries: 3If the intended structure is a nested connection block, align both children beneath the parent:

retries: 3Do not change the value names until you have confirmed the indentation problem. A parser may report the second child even though the missing indentation began on the preceding line.
Missing colon
A mapping key without a colon cannot be parsed:

motd: WelcomeWhether Welcome is an accepted value is a separate schema question. First make the document parse; then confirm that the plugin expects a string at that location.

A concise decision checklist
- Is the server still restarting automatically? Stop the loop and preserve the first complete error.
- Does the message name a filename, line, and column? Open that exact file and inspect the nearby parent block.
- Is the file a plugin configuration, server file, world file, or
plugin.yml? Use the documentation for that file type. - Have you copied the original file and log? If not, back up before editing.
- Are there tabs, inconsistent indentation, missing colons, unclosed quotes or brackets, malformed lists, duplicate keys, or misplaced values?
- After the file parses, are keys spelled and capitalized correctly for the installed version?
- Do value types and list shapes match the generated default?
- Did you restart or reload through the supported workflow and read the entire resulting log?
- If the failure persists, did you restore the backup or regenerate a documented default instead of layering on more edits?
