Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStart with the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. If the update still fails, back up your files, check the basics, and use any error code to choose a targeted fix. Save DISM/SFC repairs and Windows’ repair reinstall option for problems that point to damaged system files or components.
1. Back up files and run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Back up important personal files before making deeper changes. Then open the Get Help app and run its automated Windows Update troubleshooter. Microsoft says the tool checks for common problems and attempts to fix them. Follow its prompts, restart if requested, then check for updates again. Microsoft’s Windows update troubleshooting guide describes this first step.

If you need the Settings route, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. The exact label may vary slightly by Windows 11 release. Microsoft also notes that the troubleshooter can help with errors encountered while downloading and installing updates in its Windows Update troubleshooter guidance.

Before changing Windows components, check the conditions that can interrupt an update:

- Keep the PC connected to power and confirm that the internet connection is working.
- Use an administrator account for steps that require elevated permissions.
- Disconnect external hardware that is not needed for the update.
- Check that the date and time are correct.
- Review available storage and free space if the drive is nearly full.
Microsoft’s upgrade guidance states that an OS upgrade needs at least 16 GB free for a 32-bit operating system or 20 GB for a 64-bit operating system. Those are figures for OS upgrades, not a universal minimum for every individual Windows Update. Microsoft says a device with a small hard drive may need a USB drive to provide extra storage; first check available space and use Windows cleanup options where appropriate. The guidance does not specify a USB drive capacity or model.
3. Use the error code to choose a targeted fix
An error code is a clue, not proof of one particular fault. Microsoft lists these possible causes and directions in its Windows update troubleshooting guide:
| Code | Possible clue | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| 0x800705b4 | The update took too long or was interrupted. | Check the connection, run the troubleshooter, and restart. Microsoft also lists update-cache issues or security software interference as possibilities. |
| 0x800f0922 | Insufficient disk space, or an issue with .NET Framework or another component. | Check free space. If you use a VPN, try the update with it turned off. |
| 0xC1900101 | A driver may be incompatible. | Check relevant hardware drivers with the device or component manufacturer. The code does not identify which driver is involved. |
| 0x80248014 | A Windows Update database or service issue may be involved. | Check the Windows Update service and follow Microsoft’s targeted guidance for this code. |
| 0x80070005 | Access may be denied or permissions may be insufficient. | Check whether the account has the administrator access needed for the action. |
| 0x8007000d | Windows Update files or the update cache may be corrupted. | Run the troubleshooter; consider the cache reset below if appropriate. |
4. Reset the update cache only when it fits the symptoms
If the troubleshooter and basic checks do not help and the failure points to a cache or update-file problem, Microsoft documents clearing the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder. This uses an administrator Command Prompt and briefly stops the Windows Update service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run
net stop wuauservand wait for the Windows Update service to stop. - In File Explorer, open
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionand delete the folder’s contents, not the folder itself. - Return to the administrator Command Prompt and run
net start wuauserv. - Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Do not use this as a catch-all fix: it is relevant when the update cache or files are suspected, not when the evidence points to a driver, permissions, or another cause.

5. Repair Windows system files when corruption is suspected
For specified corruption-related errors or signs of missing or damaged Windows files, Microsoft recommends System File Checker. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run sfc /scannow. Let the scan finish before closing the window or retrying Windows Update.
Microsoft’s system-file repair instructions also cover Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM), which can repair the Windows image that SFC relies on. DISM normally obtains needed files through Windows Update. If the Windows Update client itself is broken, Microsoft documents using a running Windows installation or a side-by-side source instead. These elevated servicing tools address system-file corruption; they do not guarantee a fix for every update failure.
6. Use Windows’ repair reinstall option for persistent component problems
If targeted fixes do not resolve a persistent problem with Windows system files or components, check whether the built-in repair reinstall is available: open Settings > System > Recovery, find Fix problems using Windows Update, and select Reinstall now. Microsoft says this reinstalls the current version of Windows to repair system files and components. The option may be unavailable on work- or school-managed PCs, or on systems that do not have the required Windows 11 version and updates. See Microsoft’s Windows reinstall guidance for details.

7. Retry Windows Update and restart when prompted
After a fix, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Save your work and restart when Windows asks; many updates cannot finish installing until the PC restarts.
