In Playwright, explicitly set the browser context or page to light, verify the media-query result, and then capture. If the theme is already light, investigate page readiness and keep the browser and host environment consistent. Puppeteer’s omitBackground option controls transparency; it does not switch a site to light mode.
1. Check which color scheme the page sees
A page can respond to the browser’s prefers-color-scheme preference with different colors, including a dark theme. Headless Chrome does not, by itself, guarantee that a site renders in light mode. Check the media queries in the same page you plan to capture:

2. Set light mode before capturing
Use one of Playwright’s two documented controls. Choose based on whether the preference should apply to the whole browser context or be changed for a particular page.

Set the scheme for a browser context
Set colorScheme: 'light' when pages in the context should share the same preference. Playwright’s documented default context color scheme is light, but explicitly setting it makes the intended test setup clear.

Use page.emulateMedia() when a test needs to change schemes on a page, for example to capture both light and dark appearances. Apply it before taking the screenshot, then verify the media-query result as above.

3. Separate theme problems from transparency
In Puppeteer, omitBackground hides the default background so the captured result can be transparent. It defaults to false and does not apply to JPEG. It is not a control for a website’s light or dark theme. If the page itself looks dark, set or verify the color-scheme preference instead. See the Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions reference.

4. Stabilize the page and capture environment
Wait for the page state you need
Capture only after navigation and any page-specific content you care about have loaded. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide shows page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' }) before page.screenshot() as one example. That wait condition is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that every site is visually settled: applications may render later, continue background requests, or load content after scrolling. Add an explicit wait for a relevant selector or known page state when needed. The guide does not establish a universal delay that works for every site.

Keep visual comparisons in the same environment
Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and whether the browser is headed or headless. For visual comparisons, run the baseline and new capture in the same environment rather than assuming every difference is a page-theme issue. See Playwright Visual comparisons.

Use consistent context options when comparing images, especially viewport and deviceScaleFactor. Playwright documents a default device scale factor of 1. This setting affects output sampling and dimensions; the documentation does not identify it as a way to brighten a page or change its color scheme. See the BrowserType API.

5. Troubleshoot by symptom

Frequently Asked Questions
Does setting prefers-color-scheme to light recolor photos on the page?
No. It selects the page’s light-scheme media-query preference; it is not a general image-brightness or photo-recoloring control.
Does deviceScaleFactor affect whether a page uses its dark theme?
No documented behavior in the cited Playwright API makes device scale a theme selector. Use colorScheme or emulateMedia for that.
