Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf OBS cannot open a video file, check the scene’s Media Source path and local-file setting first. If those are correct, check the file’s actual container and codecs; a familiar extension alone does not guarantee compatibility. Try OBS’s VLC Video source as an alternative, or re-encode the file to a combination listed in OBS’s format guide. Fix playback in OBS before troubleshooting YouTube’s stream connection.
1. Check the OBS source and file path
OBS’s Media Source is designed to add audio and video files to a scene. Make sure the source is configured to use a local file and that its path points to the video you intend to play. OBS explains Media Sources in its Media Sources guide and source types in its Sources guide.

- Confirm the correct scene is selected and the Media Source appears in its Sources list.
- Open the source’s properties and check that the local-file option is selected.
- Verify the displayed path and filename, including the file’s actual location. If you moved or renamed the video, browse to it again.
- Check that the source is enabled and not hidden behind another full-screen source in the scene.
If the source points to the right file but playback still fails, inspect the media itself rather than changing YouTube stream settings.

2. Check the real container and codecs
OBS lists video extensions including .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif and .webm; listed audio extensions include .mp3, .aac, .ogg and .wav. These are extensions OBS says Media Source can use—not a guarantee that every file with one of those suffixes will decode. A file’s container and the codecs inside it both matter. See OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide for its documented compatibility matrix.

Inspect the file’s media information with a tool that reports its container and separate video and audio codecs. Compare both codecs and the container with the OBS guide. For example, the guide lists H.264 in MP4, MOV, MKV, M3U8/HLS and TS containers, but a matching video codec does not establish that the audio codec or the particular file will work in your setup. OBS also documents HEVC in MP4, MOV, MKV, M3U8/HLS and TS; AV1 in MP4 and MKV; and ProRes in MOV and MKV. Those entries describe the guide’s matrix, not a guarantee for every file, operating system build, decoder or hardware configuration.
The compatibility guide, published by OBS Project on 2023-03-26, says MKV supports every audio/video encoder combination supported in OBS Studio and is the default recording container. That recording-container fact should not be taken to mean that renaming a different file to .mkv will make it compatible.

3. Try VLC Video as an alternate source
When Media Source cannot play the file, try OBS’s VLC Video source. OBS says it uses VLC libraries for extended media support and requires VLC to be installed. Match the application architecture: OBS’s documentation states, “If you are using 64-bit OBS, you must install 64-bit VLC.” See the OBS Media Sources guide for the VLC Video source details.
- Install VLC if it is not already installed, choosing the same architecture as OBS.
- In the scene’s Sources list, add a VLC Video source and select the file or files you want it to play.
- Test playback in the OBS preview and confirm that both picture and audio behave as expected.
VLC is an alternative playback route, not a promise that it can decode every file. If it also fails, check the codecs and container or convert the media.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

4. Convert only if the file’s format requires it
If the file’s actual combination is not listed as supported for the container you need, re-encode it rather than merely changing its filename extension. Renaming video.ext to video.mp4, for example, does not change the encoded media. Use a converter that lets you choose the output container and video and audio codecs, then select a combination shown in OBS’s format guide. Recheck the converted file in a fresh Media Source before replacing the original.
- Keep the original until you have confirmed the converted file plays in OBS.
- Check both video and audio after conversion; successful picture playback alone does not confirm the audio track works.
- A documented combination is a useful starting point, not proof that a particular file or system will play it identically.
5. Test the complete scene before going live
Once the file plays in the preview, test the full scene you plan to send to YouTube. Confirm the intended video is visible, its audio is present at the expected level, and other sources do not cover it. A file that will not open locally in OBS is a playback problem; changing a YouTube stream key or network configuration does not repair the media file. If the scene works in OBS but the YouTube broadcast does not, then investigate the separate ingest or connection issue.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source cannot find the video | The local-file setting, selected scene and file path | Browse to the video’s current location in the source properties. |
| The filename ends in a familiar extension, but playback fails | The actual container and video and audio codecs | Compare them with OBS’s compatibility guide; try VLC Video or re-encode to a documented combination. |
| VLC Video source is unavailable or does not work | Whether VLC is installed and whether its architecture matches OBS | Install the matching VLC version; OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. |
| Renaming the file did not help | Whether the media was actually re-encoded | Choose a compatible output container and codecs in a converter; a suffix change does not re-encode. |
| The file plays in OBS, but the YouTube stream fails | Whether the failure is now on the broadcast or ingest side rather than local playback | Keep the two issues separate and troubleshoot the stream connection only after the scene plays correctly. |
