How to Fix a USB or External Drive Showing the Wrong Capacity

Compare the disk’s physical size with its volume layout in Disk Management. Learn which states can be fixed on an empty drive and when to stop to protect data.

First compare the disk’s total size with its partitions in Windows Disk Management. If the disk has its expected capacity but some space is unallocated or the volume is unusually small, the layout may be the issue. If the disk itself shows zero, no media, or an implausibly small capacity, a partition change is unlikely to help. If the drive contains files you need, do not format, initialize, or delete partitions while diagnosing it.

Check the disk’s total size separately from its volume

File Explorer shows a mounted volume; it does not necessarily show the full physical disk. Disk Management lets you compare the disk’s total capacity with its partitions and see whether space is unallocated, the volume lacks a drive letter, or Windows reports a state such as RAW, Offline, or Not Initialized. These conditions call for different responses.

  1. Open Start and search for Disk Management or Create and format hard disk partitions. Alternatively, press Windows+R, enter diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter. Microsoft says Disk Management works the same way in Windows 10 and Windows 11: Microsoft’s Disk Management guide.
  2. In the lower graphical pane, find the external disk and compare its total size with the sizes and states of its partitions.
  3. Before changing anything, decide whether files on the drive need to be preserved. If they do, avoid destructive changes and follow the data-preservation guidance below.
What Disk Management shows What it may mean Safe next step
Expected total disk size, a small volume, and unallocated space Some capacity is not assigned to a volume. If the disk is known to be empty, create a volume using the unallocated space. If files matter, do not create one as a recovery attempt.
A healthy volume with a file system but no drive letter The volume may exist but not appear in File Explorer. Assign a drive letter if doing so is appropriate for your setup.
RAW Windows does not recognize a usable file system for the volume. Do not format if you need to recover files. If the disk is definitely empty, formatting is an option, but it erases data.
Unallocated The space has no current volume allocation. Create a volume only if the space is known to be empty; otherwise, preserve it for recovery.
Not Initialized Microsoft lists causes including a new disk that has never been initialized, an invalid or missing disk signature, corrupted formatting, or a possible hardware problem. Initialize only a new or intentionally blank disk. Do not initialize a disk with data you need without understanding the recovery implications.
Offline The disk is present but marked Offline. Bring it Online in Disk Management, then check its state again.
No Media, zero capacity, or an implausibly tiny total disk size The problem may be at the device or connection level rather than the partition layout. Check the connection and try another computer. If the symptom persists, seek manufacturer or recovery support instead of rebuilding partitions.

Protect files before trying a repair

Formatting and repartitioning can make data inaccessible or destroy it. Microsoft’s warning is direct: “Formatting a volume will destroy any data on the partition.” Microsoft also advises against formatting RAW space or creating a volume in unallocated space when the goal is to recover files. See Microsoft’s Disk Management guidance.

  • If you need the files, do not initialize the disk, format it, delete partitions, or run a disk-cleaning command as an experiment.
  • If important files are on a disk that may be failing, stop trying destructive fixes and consider a data recovery lab. Recovery is not guaranteed.
  • If the drive is definitely empty, you can proceed with layout changes, understanding that formatting erases data on the selected volume.

Create a full-size volume on a known-empty disk

Use this only when Disk Management shows the expected physical capacity and unallocated space, and you are certain the disk contains no data you need. Microsoft documents creating a volume from unallocated space in Disk Management. A quick format creates a new file table; it does not fully overwrite the volume and is not a data-recovery method.

  1. In Disk Management, right-click the unallocated region on the correct disk and select New Simple Volume.
  2. In the wizard, choose the maximum size if you want one volume to use all available unallocated space.
  3. Choose a drive letter, then complete the wizard and format the volume if prompted.
  4. Afterward, check the volume in File Explorer. Its usable space may be lower than the advertised physical capacity because the volume and file system use some space.

Do not use a partition reset to try to increase the physical size reported for a device. Changing the layout cannot add storage that is not physically present, and a failed controller or flash memory needs a different response.

Check the connection when the physical capacity looks wrong

A connection problem or device failure can resemble a capacity problem. For an external drive that is missing or behaving unexpectedly, Microsoft recommends reconnecting it, rescanning disks, restarting the computer and powered disk, using a direct PC USB port instead of a hub, trying another cable, checking Device Manager, and testing the drive on another PC. Microsoft notes that if the disk also fails on another PC, that is a good sign the disk itself has a problem: Microsoft’s disk troubleshooting guide. That page is written for Windows Server, so its advanced instructions for server disk configurations should not be assumed to apply to ordinary removable USB storage.

  • Unplug and reconnect the drive, then rescan disks in Disk Management.
  • Restart the computer and, if applicable, power-cycle the external drive.
  • Connect it directly to a computer USB port rather than through a hub.
  • Try another cable and another computer.
  • If it remains unavailable or shows No Media, zero, or implausibly little capacity, contact the device maker or seek recovery help if the files matter.

A SanDisk support search-result summary associates No Media with failure of the flash storage inside a drive; because the support page redirected when accessed, treat that specific explanation with caution: SanDisk support. Persistent No Media or zero-capacity behavior should not be treated as a normal partition-allocation issue.

When a capacity report cannot be fixed in Windows

If Disk Management reports the expected total disk size but only part is assigned to a volume, a layout change may make the remaining space usable on a known-empty drive. If the physical disk itself reports the wrong size across ports, cables, and computers, formatting cannot restore missing physical capacity. The available documentation does not establish a particular counterfeit-drive test or a guaranteed repair for that symptom. Treat a persistent discrepancy as a possible hardware or controller problem and contact the manufacturer; replace the device only after considering whether its data needs recovery.
