Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can narrow down most TV picture problems without opening the service menu: check whether the fault appears in the TV’s own menus, compare another app or input, verify the source and cable, then use only documented picture settings or diagnostics. Menu names and available tests vary by model and software version, so follow the instructions for your exact TV.
First, find out where the picture problem occurs
Note what you see—such as a black screen, “no signal,” lines, flickering, blur, or strange colors—and whether sound still works. Press Home, Menu, or Settings to display the TV’s interface.

- If the TV menu looks normal: the display can show its own interface correctly. Check the affected app, channel, input, connected device, and connection first.
- If the menu is also distorted or has lines, flicker, or color problems: the issue may not be limited to one app or external source. Continue with a restart and any built-in picture test your model offers; if the fault remains, contact support or a repair provider.
Try a different app, channel, or input. If the symptom appears only on one channel, it may originate with the broadcast rather than the TV; Sony identifies channel-specific problems as a possible broadcast issue. TCL likewise recommends comparing apps and inputs. Sony’s picture and screen troubleshooting and TCL’s screen troubleshooting for TCL Fire TV describe this kind of comparison.

- Power off the TV and connected device, then reseat the HDMI cable at both ends.
- Try a different HDMI port on the TV, if available.
- Compare with another source device or a known-good HDMI cable, if you have one.
If substituting a cable fixes the problem, a replacement may be appropriate. Choose one that meets your equipment’s requirements and suits the cable length; a new cable is not a useful first step when the fault also appears in the TV’s menus or across unrelated sources. Samsung’s picture troubleshooting guidance includes HDMI cable tests on some models and says test availability and supported cable lengths vary. Panasonic also recommends its TV Self-Test on models that provide it; a correct test picture points toward the connected device or connection. See Panasonic’s no-picture and picture-problem guidance.
Use normal picture settings, not undocumented controls
If the TV interface is fine but a picture source looks wrong, open the ordinary Picture or Display settings and check for a setting that may explain the symptom. If the model provides a documented option to reset picture settings, you can try it for the affected mode or source. A picture-settings reset is different from a factory reset: use the model’s instructions to understand what it changes.

There is no universal menu path. Sony lists different paths for different TV models, while LG describes an AV Reset on supported models and notes that some TVs do not support picture and sound initialization. Check the published steps for your exact model and software version: Sony Support and LG’s picture and sound initialization instructions.
Restart the TV before considering a factory reset
Restart or power-cycle the TV using the manufacturer’s ordinary instructions, then check whether the symptom remains. If your model includes a picture test or self-test, run it as directed. Samsung and Panasonic document tests for supported models; not every TV offers the same diagnostic.

A factory reset is a separate, more disruptive step. It can erase preferences and require you to set up the TV again. TCL labels factory reset a last step in its guidance for TCL Fire TV and warns that it erases settings and signs users out of apps. Other systems have different reset procedures and effects, so consult the exact model’s official instructions before proceeding. Do not confuse a restart, a picture-settings reset, and a factory reset.

If the TV’s own menu or built-in test image shows the defect, or the same lines, flicker, or color distortion persists across apps and inputs after basic checks, more source swapping is unlikely to clarify the issue. Contact the TV manufacturer or a qualified repair provider. Sony advises seeking service when its troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem, and Samsung recommends service for continuing picture symptoms in specified cases. Avoid undocumented adjustments: without a model-specific diagnosis, there is no basis for identifying a particular failed component.
These are general triage steps, not universal menu instructions. The cited manufacturer guidance is for North America, and the TCL page applies specifically to TCL Fire TV; diagnostics and reset controls differ by brand, model, region, and software version.
