Daylight washes out a projector image because light from the room reflects off the screen alongside the projector’s image, lifting blacks and weakening contrast and color. Reduce the light reaching the screen first; then check that the screen is designed for ultra-short-throw (UST) projection, correctly oriented, and that the projector’s image settings and connections are sound. If the room needs to stay bright, a UST-compatible ambient-light-rejecting (ALR) screen may help—but it cannot guarantee a television-like picture in direct daylight.
Why daylight makes a UST image look washed out
A projector creates an image by sending light to a surface. Window light, overhead fixtures, lamps, and reflections from shiny surfaces can reach that same surface. On a standard screen, this ambient light competes with the projected image, making dark areas look gray and reducing contrast, color saturation, and the visible dynamic range. Legrand AV/Da-Lite explains how ambient light affects projection in its Projection Screen Academy: Ambient Light Rejection.

UST projectors add a screen-matching challenge. Their short focal length and steep projection path mean a screen must handle light arriving from below the image without simply reflecting room light back toward viewers. Legrand AV/Da-Lite notes that UST projection requires material designed for that geometry. Samsung likewise recommends a UST screen for its The Premiere projector in its screen-selection guidance. These recommendations concern screen compatibility; they do not establish a universal daylight performance level for every projector or room.
Fix the problem in order
1. Reduce light reaching the screen
- Close curtains or blinds to cut window light, or use light-blocking shades if the room needs a more durable solution.
- Dim or switch off fixtures that illuminate the screen. Move lamps or other bright sources out of the screen’s reflective path where practical.
- Reduce reflections from glossy surfaces near the screen if they are sending light onto it.
The goal is to reduce competing light at the screen—not simply to raise the projector’s brightness setting. A brighter setting cannot remove room light that is lifting the apparent black level.
#1 Best Overall
- ★【BRIGHTNESS BOOST】This screen displays significantly brighter images than a normal white screen when viewed from center seats (up to 2.6x gain), and maintains comparable brightness from other angles. Enjoy a brighter image, or use the brightness for a bigger screen! (NOT for UST projectors.)
- ★【AMBIENT LIGHT REJECTING】 The screen effectively suppresses ambient light(30%), improving image contrast and color saturation. This makes a better image than normal white screen during the day or with lights on.
- ★【SHARP IMAGE】 Thanks to the reduced light bleed, this screen offers a sharper and more vivid image than normal white screens.
- ★【Just like a Fixed-frame】 With innovative materials and unique installation method, this screen boasts a flat surface and neat edges similar to a fixed-frame screen. This design avoids the wrinkles and spider-web-like edges common in similar products.
- ★【Easy to Install and Customize 】 Using our patented wall-safe tape, you can stick the screen on a wall or a frame in about 10 minutes. Additionally, this screen can easily be trimmed to perfectly fit your space!
2. Confirm the screen suits UST projection
Check the screen’s product documentation for explicit UST compatibility and its required installation orientation. An unsuitable surface, or a compatible surface installed the wrong way, can reflect projector and ambient light in ways that create light bleed and low contrast. Samsung’s screen guidance describes this risk for The Premiere; other projector and screen combinations may have different requirements.
ALR is not one universal screen type. Its performance depends on the direction of the room light and the screen’s optical design. A surface intended to reject light from above may not be the right match for daylight arriving from another direction. Check the product’s stated light-rejection angle and orientation against your room rather than relying on the ALR label alone.

The tripod is made of sturdy metal with a thick main pole and four robust diagonal braces, ensuring a stable screen structure and a flat image, saying goodbye to the annoying wrinkles or curls on the movie screen.
- Lightweight, Portable: Only 10 pounds Weigh, small projector screen can be easily packed into the included carring bag. With this portable projector screen, you can carry it with one hand to wherever you want, home theaters, outdoor camping, school lectures, corporate meetings, and more.
- Adjustable Height, No Visual Obstacles: Projection screen allows you to freely adjust its height (up to 89 inches, as low as 45 inches), allow you to choose the most suitable viewing angle based on your habits and space layout, enjoying a clear and unobstructed projection. Other projector screens may be obstructed by desktops or other obstacles, blocking the viewer's sightline.
3. Check picture settings, source, cables, and placement
Before replacing hardware, follow your projector’s manual or support guidance to check the available picture or color modes, the source device’s output settings, and the HDR/dynamic-range and color-space settings for the content. Reseat or inspect the cables, and verify that the projector is positioned at the required distance and angle. Epson lists these kinds of checks in its guidance for incorrect image brightness or colors; the exact menu names and options vary by model and brand.

If brightness has gradually declined over time and the projector uses a replaceable lamp, check its lamp status and manual. Epson notes that progressive dimming may mean a lamp needs replacing. That lamp-specific advice should not be applied to a projector with a laser light engine.

When a UST ALR screen is worth considering
If the room must remain bright after you have adjusted light sources and checked setup, compare UST-specific ALR screens for the projector and seating arrangement. Treat the screen as a way to manage certain room-light conditions, not as a guarantee of a watchable image in direct daylight. The available manufacturer guidance and product specification do not establish a universal brightness threshold at which a UST projector will remain usable.
- Light direction and rejection angle: Determine where daylight and fixtures strike the screen, then see whether the screen’s design rejects light from those directions.
- UST compatibility and orientation: Confirm that the screen material supports the projector’s short focal length and below-screen projection path, and follow its specified tabletop, desktop, or other installation orientation.
- Gain and viewing position: Gain affects perceived brightness and viewing angle. A narrow viewing angle can make the image dimmer for people sitting off to the side; some screen designs may also affect color consistency.
- Horizontal and vertical viewing angles: Check these specifications if people will watch from different seats or heights.
- Screen size and fit: Match the screen’s usable image size to the projector’s supported image size, room dimensions, and placement.
For example, Optoma’s 2020 ALR101e datasheet specifies a 100.25-inch diagonal UST ALR screen, greater than 90% ambient-light rejection, and a 45-degree rejection angle for elevated or ceiling lights. It also requires tabletop/desktop orientation. These are manufacturer specifications for that particular model, not independent test results or a promise about daylight from every direction.

Choosing between room changes and a screen change
| Option | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce or redirect room light | When you can adjust curtains, fixtures, lamps, or nearby reflective surfaces. | Whether it meaningfully reduces light falling on the screen during viewing. |
| UST-compatible ALR screen | When the room needs to remain bright and the screen can be matched to the projector’s UST geometry. | Rejection direction, installation orientation, gain, viewing angles, and screen size. |
| Combine both | When some ambient light is unavoidable but can still be reduced. | Whether the screen’s design suits the remaining light sources and seating positions. |
There is no single screen winner established for every room and projector. Compare the specifications against your actual light sources, projector placement, and seating before buying.
