First identify where the connection fails: the extender cannot find your router’s Wi-Fi, it finds the network but will not join, or devices connect to the extender but have no internet. Put the extender near the router while troubleshooting, confirm the router’s network name and password, and then follow the matching checks below. If you recently replaced the router, the extender will generally need to be reset and set up again.
Start by identifying the failure
| What you see | Start here |
|---|---|
| The router’s Wi-Fi name does not appear in the extender’s scan | Check signal range, whether the router broadcasts its network name, band support and channel settings. |
| The network appears, but the extender will not connect | Verify the password, then check router access controls, wireless security and band or channel settings. |
| A phone or laptop connects to the extender but has no internet | Try another client and compare its connection through the extender with a direct connection to the router. |
TP-Link’s troubleshooting guide treats these as different problems, so avoid resetting the extender until the simpler checks for your symptom have been tried. See TP-Link’s range-extender troubleshooting guide.

If the extender can’t find your Wi-Fi
Bring the extender close to the router
During setup and rescanning, place the extender within about 3 m (10 ft) of the router. TP-Link’s setup guide recommends a distance within 16 ft during setup. Once the extender joins successfully, move it to its intended location. See TP-Link’s troubleshooting steps and TP-Link’s setup guide.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchConfirm the router’s network is available
- Check that the router’s Wi-Fi network name (SSID) is being broadcast rather than hidden.
- Connect a phone or laptop directly to that network to confirm it is visible and working.
- Rescan in the extender’s setup screen. If the list is long, check its other pages for the router’s network.
- Restart the router and extender, then scan again.
Check band and channel support
Make sure the extender supports the band you are trying to use. A model without 5 GHz support cannot join a 5 GHz-only network; if your router is 2.4 GHz-only, there is no 5 GHz setup step to complete. For a missing host network, TP-Link suggests testing 2.4 GHz channels 1, 6 or 11, and 5 GHz channels 36, 40, 44 or 48. These are troubleshooting tests, not universal settings: available channels vary by router and region. Consult your router’s instructions before changing its channel.

If the network appears but the extender won’t join
Recheck the password and router security
Enter the exact password for the router’s Wi-Fi network; it is not necessarily the router’s administrator password. Also inspect the router’s MAC filtering or access-control rules and wireless security settings. If you change a router setting to test the connection, record the original value and restore it if it does not help.
Test for band steering or a 5 GHz channel issue
If the extender reports “No Host Network Connection” after settings are applied, TP-Link identifies a DFS-channel issue as one possible cause. As a test, disable band steering and set the router’s 5 GHz band to a channel from 36–48. Router menus and permitted channels differ by model and region; this is not a required permanent setting for every network.

Account for recent router changes
If you changed the router’s Wi-Fi name, password, channel, security or access-control settings, review those changes first. If you replaced the router, the extender generally will not automatically detect the new host network; reset it and configure it for the new router.

- Try more than one phone or laptop through the extender. If only one device fails, the problem may be specific to that client.
- Connect the same device directly to the router and check whether the internet works there.
- If direct router access works but the extender connection does not, focus on the extender’s connection to the router (the wireless backhaul) and repeat the range, band, channel and router-setting checks above.
- Note the device’s IP address when connected through the extender and when connected directly to the router. Include both in a support request if the problem persists.

Choose a setup method
Use Tether or the web setup for more control
TP-Link supports setup through the Tether app or the extender’s web management page. These routes let you scan for the host network and enter its password. Follow the instructions for your model, hardware revision and region in its TP-Link support and download page.
Use WPS if both devices support it
- Press the router’s WPS button.
- Within two minutes, press the extender’s WPS button.
- Wait for the extender’s wireless signal indicator and follow the model-specific guide to confirm pairing.
If the indicator stays off after the pairing window, try again or use Tether or web setup instead. Some dual-band routers connect a WPS client to only one band. See TP-Link’s WPS instructions.

- Dual Band WiFi Extender: Up to 44% more bandwidth than single band N300 WiFi extenders. Boost Internet WiFi coverage up to 1200 square feet and connects up to 30 devices(2.4GHz: 300Mbps; 5GHz: 433Mbps)
Reset and configure the extender again
A reset erases the extender’s saved setup; it is not the same as restarting it. Use this when the router has been replaced or the existing configuration cannot be recovered through the less disruptive checks.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Find the exact extender model and hardware revision on its label.
- With the extender powered on, press its reset button with a pin for one second, following TP-Link’s general instructions. Some older firmware versions may require about five seconds until the Power LED blinks.
- Set up the extender again using Tether, its web management page or WPS if supported by both devices.
Reset timing and LED behavior can differ by model, so consult that model’s Quick Installation Guide before proceeding. See TP-Link’s setup instructions.

Update firmware only for the exact model
If the connection still fails, check TP-Link’s support page for the extender’s exact model and hardware revision. Use only firmware listed for that specific device. TP-Link documents updates through the Tether app, an online update in the web interface, or a downloaded local file. Read the release notes and follow their directions about backing up settings or resets. Do not switch off or reset the extender during an update. Start at TP-Link’s downloads page.
What to send TP-Link support
If model-specific troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, provide support with details that help distinguish a host-network problem from a device or configuration problem:
Quick Recap
- Extender model, hardware revision and firmware version.
- Router model and firmware version.
- Whether you are trying 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, and the router’s channel if known.
- What the extender’s LEDs are doing, interpreted using its own Quick Installation Guide.
- The IP address of a phone or laptop connected through the extender and the address when connected directly to the router.
