Check whether another device can use the same network before changing drivers. If other devices also fail, focus on the router or internet service; if they work, troubleshoot the Surface with the reversible checks below.
Identify the Wi-Fi failure
Open Settings > Network & internet and check whether Wi-Fi is on, Airplane mode is off, and your network appears. Microsoft separates Surface Wi-Fi problems into several symptoms; the distinction helps you choose the right next step. See Microsoft’s Surface Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide.
For Surface Wi-Fi problems, Outbyte Driver Updater can check the wireless adapter driver for missing, outdated, or corrupted files.

- Your network is missing: Check Wi-Fi and Airplane mode, then follow the Surface-specific restart and adapter checks below.
- The network appears, but connection fails: Test another device on the same network, then run Windows’ network troubleshooter.
- The Surface says it is connected, but there is no internet: Check whether other devices can browse. If only one app or website fails, the issue may be with that app, site, or a firewall rather than the Wi-Fi connection itself.
- Wi-Fi controls are missing: Check Device Manager for the wireless adapter; it may be disabled or unavailable to Windows.
Check whether the router or the Surface is at fault
Connect a phone or another computer to the same Wi-Fi network. If that device also cannot connect, restart the modem and Wi-Fi router. If devices connect to Wi-Fi but none can reach the internet, contact your internet provider or the maker of your network equipment. Microsoft outlines these network checks in its Surface troubleshooting instructions.
If the other device works normally, continue with the Surface-specific checks. This simple comparison prevents you from changing Surface drivers when the fault is actually with the network.

Run the Windows network troubleshooter
In current Windows 11 instructions, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then select Run beside Network Adapter. You can also start the automated Network and Internet troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Labels and routes can vary with Windows versions. See Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide.
Toggle Airplane mode and restart the Surface
- Turn Airplane mode on, wait briefly, then turn it off.
- Confirm Wi-Fi is switched on in Settings > Network & internet.
- If the network is still missing, shut down the Surface, wait briefly, then hold the power button for 20 seconds to force a restart, as described in Microsoft’s Surface Wi-Fi steps.
Check the wireless adapter in Device Manager
If Wi-Fi controls or networks are missing, open Device Manager > Network adapters and look for the wireless adapter. Surface models use different adapter families, including Intel, Qualcomm, and Marvell AVASTAR; newer Surface Laptop for Business generations may use Intel Wi-Fi 7 BE201. The exact adapter depends on the model, so do not choose a driver package based on another Surface generation’s hardware.

To check whether an adapter is disabled, double-click it. If Windows offers the option, disable the adapter and then enable it again, and restart the Surface. Microsoft’s model-aware Surface instructions list adapter families and troubleshooting steps.
Install updates or reinstall the correct driver
If the Surface can get online, install available Windows and Surface updates. If Wi-Fi is unavailable, Microsoft describes using Ethernet, if available, or another internet-connected PC to download the Surface driver package (MSI). With another PC, save the package to a USB drive, transfer it to the Surface, and install it. Choose the package for your exact model using Microsoft’s Surface support instructions.

Uninstalling the wireless adapter driver is a later step, not a first response. Microsoft’s Windows guidance describes removing the adapter driver and restarting so Windows can try to reinstall it; follow the instructions for your particular Surface model before doing this. The same Surface article explicitly warns not to uninstall drivers on Surface Pro X, because restoring them requires a full system reset. Get help before resetting or recovering
If ordinary checks do not restore Wi-Fi, the Surface app can show update status and direct you to Get help. Microsoft also provides Surface repair and diagnostic tools; see Diagnose and repair problems on your Surface.

Reset or recovery is a last resort, not a routine Wi-Fi fix. Back up important files first: Microsoft says using a recovery drive reinstalls Windows, deletes personal files, resets settings, and removes installed apps. Review Microsoft’s reset and recovery guidance before proceeding.

Microsoft ended free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. A Surface running Windows 10 continues to work, but Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11.
