If a Steam game won’t open on your Steam Deck, start with the reversible checks: update SteamOS, restart the Deck, temporarily disable third-party Desktop Mode apps, check the game’s compatibility and requirements, verify its files, then test a per-game Proton setting. If the game opens and then crashes, note that distinction and the exact error; without the game name and those details, the cause can’t be diagnosed reliably.
Start with system updates and a restart
- Install available SteamOS updates. Check for updates in the Deck’s Settings, install any available update, then restart the device. Valve recommends updates and a restart as initial checks for system instability. See Valve’s Steam Deck software troubleshooting guide and Steam’s game-launch troubleshooting guidance.
- Retry the game after restarting. This is a low-risk check before changing compatibility settings or considering system recovery.
- Temporarily disable third-party apps used in Desktop Mode. Exit or disable them, then try launching the game again. If the game starts, re-enable apps one at a time to narrow down a possible conflict.
Check whether the game supports Steam Deck
Open the game’s Steam Store page and review its Steam Deck compatibility details and system requirements. Valve uses four compatibility labels, and they mean different things:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Label | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | The game works great on Steam Deck by default; no additional modification is necessary. | If it still fails, continue with the file and per-game checks below. |
| Playable | The game works, but may require manual configuration. | On the Store page, inspect which Verified requirements are not met. |
| Unsupported | Valve currently does not consider the game playable on Deck. | Check the stated compatibility details and supported operating systems before trying workarounds. |
| Unknown | Valve has not tested the game. | Unknown is not proof that the game is broken; check its requirements and available game-specific support. |
Also compare the game’s operating-system and hardware requirements with the Steam Deck. A compatibility label is useful context, not a guarantee that every launch problem has the same cause. Details are in Valve’s Steam Deck guide.

- In Steam, open Library and select the game.
- Open the game’s Properties.
- Select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish; Valve notes verification can take several minutes.
Steam may report that one or more files failed verification because they are local configuration files. Valve says this can be normal; those files should not be replaced. For the verification procedure and this qualification, see Steam’s file-verification instructions.

Test Proton for this game
Proton changes how an individual game runs; it is not a guaranteed fix for every title. To test it, highlight the game in Library, press the Deck’s Menu button, then open Properties > Compatibility. Select Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then try the latest Proton version available.
If the game was installed as a Linux version only, forcing Proton may cause Steam to download the Windows version. Allow for that download before retrying. Valve’s recommended per-game procedure is in its Steam Deck software troubleshooting guide.

If Steam says the game is unavailable on your platform
The message “Game is not available on your current platform” means the game does not support the current operating system, according to Valve’s explanation of platform-availability errors. Check the game’s Store-page system requirements for supported operating systems and hardware. This message points to compatibility, so verifying files is not a direct remedy; Proton may or may not work for that particular game.
Escalate with useful details
If the checks above do not help, contact the game’s developer or Steam Support. Include the game name, the exact error message (or a precise description if there is no message), whether it never opens or opens and crashes, your SteamOS version, recent changes, and the steps you already tried. Valve also suggests checking SteamOS and Steam Deck discussions; for persistent stability or performance issues, Steam Deck Beta may be worth considering. See Valve’s troubleshooting guide and Steam’s launch support page.

Keep SteamOS recovery as a last resort
Rollback, repair, factory reset, and re-imaging are responses to broader operating-system problems, not routine fixes for one game. Their consequences differ:
| Recovery option | Effect described by Valve | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Rollback | Returns to a previous known-good SteamOS version while retaining user data. | A recent OS modification may have caused the issue, or the current OS may be corrupted. |
| Repair SteamOS | Attempts to preserve games and personal content. | A system-level repair is needed. |
| Factory reset | Clears local data. | Consider only after understanding the data consequences and other options. |
| Re-image | Fully wipes user information, installed games, applications, or operating systems. | A substantial recovery step, not an early response to one failing game. |
Review Valve’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guide and Steam Deck recovery instructions before using a recovery option. In particular, confirm what data will be kept or erased before proceeding.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
