If a device using a static IP address has no internet, first check whether the problem affects one device or the whole network. On Windows, inspect the active adapter with ipconfig /all, then verify that its IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS servers match the network. A duplicate address or incorrect gateway can block connectivity; incorrect DNS can prevent websites from loading by name. If the device does not need a manually assigned address, switching it to Automatic (DHCP) is often the simplest fix.
First, work out how widespread the problem is
Check another device on the same network. If other devices connect normally, focus on the affected device’s settings. If none can connect, the router, access point, or upstream internet connection may be the cause rather than that device’s static IP.

- Only one device is affected: inspect its IP assignment and test its connection to the local network.
- Several devices are affected: check the router or access point and whether the internet service is available.
- Wi-Fi fails but Ethernet works: the fault may be specific to the Wi-Fi connection. Microsoft recommends trying another device and checking whether Ethernet works as ways to narrow down Windows Wi-Fi problems. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide has additional checks.
Check the static IP settings in Windows
Windows menu labels can vary by version, but the network adapter’s IP assignment settings are where you choose automatic or manual addressing. For Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet, select Wi-Fi or Ethernet, open the connected network or adapter’s properties, and find IP assignment. Select Edit to review or change it. Do not treat any example address you find online as a universal value: the correct settings depend on your network.
- Open Command Prompt and run
ipconfig /all. - Find the active Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter, not a disconnected or virtual adapter.
- Record its IPv4 address, subnet mask, default gateway, DNS servers, and connection-specific DNS suffix.
- Compare the values with the settings supplied by your router or network administrator. Confirm the address belongs to the correct subnet and that the gateway and DNS servers are valid for this network.
Microsoft’s Windows network settings guidance recommends Automatic (DHCP) for typical configurations. With that option selected, the router or access point supplies the IP and DNS settings automatically.

Look for a static IP address conflict
A manually assigned address can conflict with one handed out by DHCP. For example, if a static address is inside the router’s dynamic allocation pool, the router may assign that same address to another device. The resulting duplicate-IP conflict can interrupt connectivity for one or both devices.
- If the device does not need a fixed local address: change it to Automatic (DHCP).
- If it does need a stable address: use a router-supported reservation or have the network administrator exclude the address from the DHCP scope. Make sure the address is valid for the subnet and is not available for dynamic assignment.
Microsoft documents using DHCP on the device or excluding the static address from the DHCP scope as remedies for duplicate-address problems. Its duplicate-IP guidance is useful for distinguishing a device setting from a DHCP configuration issue. Changing a DHCP scope is an administrator task; do not alter managed network settings without authorization.

Separate a gateway problem from a DNS problem
The default gateway is the route from your local network to other networks. DNS translates website names into IP addresses. A wrong gateway may prevent access beyond the local network, while wrong DNS settings can make websites appear unavailable by name even if some network connectivity remains.

- In
ipconfig /all, verify that the active adapter has the expected gateway and DNS servers. - Test whether the gateway is reachable. If it is not, check the device’s local Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, subnet settings, and possible duplicate addresses.
- If the gateway responds but websites do not load by name, check DNS. Microsoft suggests testing connectivity to a DNS server by its IP address.
A failed ping is not conclusive: the destination or network may block ICMP traffic even when other traffic works. Treat ping as one clue, not a definitive diagnosis. Microsoft’s ipconfig guidance explains which network details to inspect.

Choose DHCP or a manual address
Use the addressing method that fits the network’s plan, not simply the one that seems more permanent.

To restore DHCP in Windows, open the adapter’s IP assignment settings, choose Edit, select Automatic (DHCP), and save. If the device is already configured for DHCP, run ipconfig /renew in Command Prompt to request a lease. That command applies to dynamically configured clients; it does not repair an incorrect manual configuration.

Retest, then decide what to fix next
After changing a setting, reconnect to the network or renew the DHCP lease if the device is configured to use DHCP. Then check the gateway and try reaching a known destination. Use the result to narrow down the next step:

- Gateway unreachable: check local Wi-Fi or Ethernet connectivity, the address and subnet, and possible address conflicts.
- Gateway reachable, but names do not resolve: recheck the DNS server settings.
- Other devices also fail: investigate the router, access point, or upstream connection.
- A managed network requires a DHCP-scope or reservation change: ask its administrator. Microsoft’s DHCP troubleshooting guidance covers administrator checks such as scope capacity, server configuration, and static devices that have not been excluded from the pool.
