A remote or app showing a new number does not prove the mattress reached that setting: control response and airflow are separate things to troubleshoot. If the bed adjusts but later softens again, use the air-loss checks rather than repeatedly changing the setting.
First identify what is—and is not—working
Before changing anything, note whether the problem affects inflation, deflation, or both; whether one side or both sides are affected; whether the app or remote display changes; and whether the mattress feel changes. Record the bed generation or model and any error code. These details help distinguish a control problem from an airflow or air-loss problem.

Compare the app and remote, if your bed supports the app
Try another control action and compare the remote with the Sleep Number app. If the app adjusts the bed but the remote does not, focus on the remote; if neither control works, investigate the bed’s power or connection. Pairing and restart procedures vary by system, so do not apply instructions for one remote generation to another.

For smart beds purchased from 2022 to the present with Smart Control, Sleep Number recommends checking and reseating the remote batteries, restarting the bed, and running the app’s Quick System Test if available. In the app, use the Smart Bed settings to restart. If you cannot use the app, unplug the bed for 20 seconds and reconnect it. See the model-specific smart-bed remote troubleshooting instructions.
Confirm pump power
Make sure the pump or control system is connected to a working outlet and that its power or indicator lights are on. For a traditional remote showing ER, E, or E0, check the plug and outlet, replace the remote battery if applicable, and restart the system using the instructions for that remote. Sleep Number’s traditional-remote error guide describes these codes as commonly associated with lost power or communication.

Inspect the air hoses and retry
The pump inflates or deflates the air chambers, and hoses connect the chambers to the control system. A kink, loose fitting, or damaged hose can interrupt airflow. See Sleep Number’s overview of the smart mattress components.

- Check that hose fittings are seated securely. Look for visible cracks, damaged parts, or missing O-rings.
- On beds sold after 2016, the chamber connector can be disconnected by pressing its tab while gently pulling. Reconnect it securely. Do not force a fitting; contact Sleep Number if a part is broken or damaged.
- Try changing the setting again. Some remotes require you to press Enter to start the adjustment.
Avoid lifting a heavy bed without help. If the remote display changes but the mattress still does not respond after these checks, note the model, error, and affected side before contacting Sleep Number Support.

Read error codes for your remote generation
Error meanings are not universal across Sleep Number systems. Use the code and the applicable model-specific support page rather than assuming every remote follows the same reset or pairing steps.

If the bed adjusts but keeps losing firmness
A bed that reaches a setting and then repeatedly softens may have an air-loss problem rather than a control failure. Follow Sleep Number’s air-loss troubleshooting guide. It recommends checking power and hose connections and, on applicable smart beds, turning Responsive Air off to rule out automatic adjustments.

The guide also describes a chamber-cap test to help distinguish a leak in an air chamber from an issue with pump output. It uses white chamber caps and monitoring over one to three nights. Caps may be stored inside the bed or base, or obtained from a Sleep Number store or online. Check that the test applies to your model and follow the manufacturer’s instructions; the caps are for isolating air loss, not a repair for an adjustment problem.
When to contact Sleep Number
Contact support if the bed still will not adjust after you check the applicable control, power, and hose connections; if an error remains after model-specific instructions; or if you find a damaged part. Have the model or generation, error message, steps already tried, and whether one or both sides are affected ready. Avoid ordering a remote, hose, O-ring, or control component until the fault and model compatibility are established.
