First, select Samsung Keyboard as your default, then restart your Galaxy device. If the keyboard still will not appear, install available software updates and test in Safe Mode. Clear keyboard cache or data only after those simpler checks; clearing data removes saved words and keyboard settings. Menu names and paths can vary by model, carrier, and software version.
Find out where the keyboard is missing
Check whether the keyboard is absent everywhere, only in one app, or only when you enter a password on the lock screen. If it fails in just one app, test another text field too; if it is missing only on the lock screen, go directly to the Safe Mode steps below.

Set Samsung Keyboard as the default
- Open Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default > Default keyboard.
- Select Samsung Keyboard, then try typing in a text field.
If a third-party keyboard was selected, switching back to Samsung Keyboard can restore the built-in input method. If you prefer the third-party keyboard and it continues to fail, Samsung advises contacting that app’s developer.

Restart and check for updates
Optimize and restart
- Close apps you are not using.
- If available, open Settings > Device care > Optimize now.
- Restart the phone or tablet and test the keyboard again.
Samsung includes optimization and a restart among its early checks for minor software issues and background activity.
Install available software updates
- Open Settings > Software update.
- Tap Download and install or Check for updates, depending on the device or carrier.
- Install any offered update, then check whether the keyboard appears.
Samsung has documented an empty space below Samsung Keyboard as a display issue associated with a specific One UI 6.1 update. That version-specific issue does not establish the cause of every missing keyboard, but keeping software current is one of Samsung’s general troubleshooting steps.
Use Safe Mode to check for app interference
Safe Mode helps determine whether a downloaded app is disrupting keyboard behavior. The way to enter it depends on the Galaxy model. Samsung describes methods that include holding the volume-down button during startup or touching and holding Power off in the power menu.

- Start the device in Safe Mode using the method for your model.
- Try typing in a text field. On Samsung’s lock-screen troubleshooting path, Safe Mode also sets Samsung Keyboard as the default.
- If the keyboard works, restart normally and remove recently installed apps one at a time. Test after each removal to see whether the problem returns.
To leave Safe Mode, restart the device normally. If the keyboard is missing while you are trying to enter a lock-screen password, test this step before considering a reset: Samsung says some third-party keyboards may not appear on the lock screen.

Clearing cache is a lower-impact step than clearing data. Clearing data resets the app and removes personal app settings or saved data; Samsung specifically says that clearing Samsung Keyboard data erases its settings, including saved words.
Try clearing the cache
- Open Settings > Apps and select Samsung Keyboard. It may be listed among system apps.
- Open Storage and tap Clear cache.
- Test the keyboard again.
Samsung also provides keyboard-specific reset options in its keyboard settings. Depending on the device, these can reset settings, remove learned predictions or touch-recognition data, and clear cache.

Force stop and clear data as a later step
- Open Settings > Apps. If Samsung Keyboard is not listed, use the menu to enable Show system apps.
- Select Samsung Keyboard > Force stop.
- Open Storage and choose Clear data only if you accept losing its settings and saved words.
- Reopen a text field and check whether the keyboard appears.
Labels and menus can differ across devices. Samsung’s general app guidance distinguishes clearing cache from clearing data: data resets the app and removes personal settings or saved information.
Reserve factory reset for a last resort
Samsung lists a factory data reset only after other troubleshooting steps. Back up the device before resetting: the process erases device data, and you will have to set up the device again. You may also need account or lock-screen credentials to complete setup.
Tablet fallback: use a compatible physical keyboard
If you need to type on a Galaxy tablet while troubleshooting the on-screen keyboard, Samsung says compatible book cover keyboards are available. This is a typing alternative, not a repair for the missing virtual keyboard. Confirm compatibility with your exact tablet model; the cited guidance does not establish a particular model or price.
