An update that has not been released for your exact model and carrier cannot be forced by resetting the phone or changing cables. For a failed download, check the displayed error, then try the matching fix below; if repeated downloads fail, Samsung’s Smart Switch for Windows or Mac is an alternative.
First identify where the update process stops
Write down the phone’s exact model, carrier, region, current software version, and the full error message. The update options and labels can differ by model and provider. To find the software version, open Settings > About phone > Software information, as described in Samsung’s update-failure guidance.

Then classify the problem: no update appears, the download stops or reports an error, or the downloaded update fails during installation. These symptoms point to different next steps.
If the One UI update is not offered
Availability depends on the exact device and carrier, not just the phone’s unlocked status. Carriers develop and release updates, and Samsung says a release may roll out in waves. A phone originally sold for a particular carrier may still receive updates through that carrier after it is unlocked; some SIM-unlocked phones may require the original carrier’s SIM to download an update. - Connect to Wi-Fi and check again. Updates can be large, and many carriers require Wi-Fi.
- Check whether the carrier has released the update for your exact model and region. If the phone was originally sold by a carrier, ask that carrier about its release schedule.
- If the original carrier unlocked the phone, check whether its SIM needs to be installed for the update check.
- If the update was just announced, check again later. Samsung says releases may be distributed in waves and recommends checking every few hours.
- If you have access to a Windows PC or Mac, connect the phone to Samsung Smart Switch and see whether Update is offered. Some carriers also have their own computer update utilities.
Repeatedly tapping Check for updates, resetting the phone, or replacing a cable will not make an update appear before it is released for that device. Smart Switch is an alternative delivery route, not a way around carrier eligibility.
If the download or installation fails
Use the message on the phone as the first guide. Samsung’s update troubleshooting steps distinguish low storage and incomplete downloads from repeated download failures.

- Incomplete download: Resume the download from its notification, following Samsung’s instructions.
- Repeated download failure: Try installing through Smart Switch over a USB data connection.
- Installation in progress: Let it finish. Samsung warns that the phone may be unusable and files inaccessible while an update installs. For a Smart Switch update, do not use the phone or disconnect its USB cable during the process; see Samsung’s Smart Switch instructions.
Install through Smart Switch on a computer
Smart Switch is useful when an update is available but repeated phone-side downloads fail. It requires a Windows PC or Mac and a working USB data connection; it cannot install an update that has not been released for your device.

- Install or open Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect the Galaxy using the cable supplied with the phone. Some computers may require a USB adapter.
- Wait for Smart Switch to detect the phone, then choose Update if the option appears and follow the prompts.
- Keep the phone connected and unused until the update completes.
If Smart Switch does not detect the phone or the update fails, Samsung recommends these checks in its Smart Switch troubleshooting guidance:

- Install available operating-system updates on the computer and restart it.
- Remove and reinstall Smart Switch.
- If the phone prompts for a USB mode, choose Transferring files / Android Auto.
- Try another USB port, a different data-capable cable, or another computer. Start with the included cable; if it is faulty, a replacement must fit the phone and computer ports and support data transfer.
Verizon note: Samsung says Verizon phones’ USB setting for system updates is not compatible with Smart Switch and is intended for Verizon’s software upgrade assistant. Follow Verizon’s instructions for that route.

Routine retries, freeing storage, and using Smart Switch do not require starting with a factory reset. Treat a reset or emergency recovery as a separate, higher-risk step: back up important data first. Samsung warns that Smart Switch emergency recovery may include a factory data reset and that a recovery on another computer can require the recovery code from the computer where the update originally failed. Samsung also advises backing up before a factory reset and warns that data may be lost; see its Smart Switch recovery guidance.

If the phone will not boot after the failed update
Do not keep repeating normal update steps if the Galaxy cannot start normally. Samsung states: “If the device fails to boot normally after an update fails, service will be required to reflash the device.” Contact Samsung Support or an authorized service channel for your country or region. The appropriate service options depend on location; Samsung’s update-failure page describes this boot-failure case.
