If your Galaxy keeps switching back to Samsung Keyboard, first choose your preferred keyboard again under Settings → General management → Keyboard list and default → Default keyboard. Then check that it is enabled. If the selection still will not stick, reset Samsung Keyboard settings or troubleshoot Gboard separately; use Safe Mode later to check for an app conflict.
Set your preferred keyboard as the default
- Open Settings → General management → Keyboard list and default.
- Tap Default keyboard and select the keyboard you want to use.
- Open an app where you can type and confirm the selected keyboard appears.
These are the labels in Samsung’s current US support instructions. If they differ on your Galaxy, search Settings for Default keyboard. Samsung notes that keyboard options can be downloaded from the Play Store or Galaxy Store. Samsung’s keyboard settings guide covers the setting and reset options.

Check that the keyboard is enabled
In Settings → General management → Keyboard list and default, check the keyboard list and make sure your preferred keyboard is switched on. A keyboard cannot be selected as the default if it is not available in the enabled list.
If Gboard is missing after an update, Google’s guidance is to enable it again in the on-screen keyboard settings. Use Settings search for On-screen keyboard or Manage keyboards if your device uses different labels. Google’s Gboard troubleshooting guide has the Gboard-specific steps.

If Samsung Keyboard keeps taking over
Reset Samsung Keyboard settings
- In Settings, search for Samsung Keyboard.
- Open its settings and scroll to Reset to default settings.
- Choose Reset keyboard settings and confirm.
- Return to Default keyboard and select your preferred keyboard again.
Samsung says this keyboard-settings reset does not remove downloaded languages. Its reset menu also offers separate actions for erasing personalized predictions, deleting personalized touch-recognition data, and clearing cache; those are not the same as resetting keyboard settings. Do not confuse a settings reset with clearing app data
Clearing Samsung Keyboard’s app data is a broader step than choosing Reset keyboard settings. Samsung’s troubleshooting instructions say that clearing app data erases keyboard settings, including saved words. Try the dedicated settings reset first, and use app-data clearing only if simpler steps have not helped. Samsung’s keyboard troubleshooting page explains its malfunction steps.

If Gboard switches away while you type
A keyboard that changes in the middle of typing is not necessarily the same problem as the Galaxy’s saved default changing back. To switch back during typing, touch and hold the globe key and tap Gboard, as Google recommends.

- Force stop Gboard, then open it again.
- Clear its cache first. If the problem continues, clear its data or storage; Google says this returns Gboard to its default state.
- If needed, reinstall Gboard from Google Play.
If Gboard is the only keyboard installed, install and enable a secondary keyboard before removing it so you still have a way to type. These steps address Gboard app trouble; they do not establish that Gboard caused the Galaxy’s default selection to change. Google’s Gboard help provides the full procedure.

If the keyboard continues to revert after you have selected and enabled it, restart the phone, check for software updates, and test in Safe Mode. Samsung includes these steps in its general keyboard troubleshooting guidance.

If the issue stops in Safe Mode, Samsung says a third-party app is responsible. Safe Mode does not identify which app, so remove recently installed apps one at a time and retest after each removal. The available guidance does not establish a universal cause for keyboards changing back. Samsung’s troubleshooting page describes the escalation steps.

Samsung lists factory reset as a final troubleshooting option, not a first fix for a keyboard selection problem. It erases all data on the device, so back up important information before considering it. If the Settings labels do not match or the issue persists through the keyboard and Safe Mode checks, consult Samsung’s keyboard settings guide or Samsung support for model-specific help.
