To use a different keyboard app on a Samsung Galaxy phone, install it first, then open Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default > Default keyboard and select it. If you only want another typing language or layout, change Samsung Keyboard’s settings instead; those options do not replace the keyboard app or change the phone’s system language.
Choose a different keyboard app
- Install the keyboard you want from the Play Store or Galaxy Store. Samsung says the app must be installed before you can select it as the default.
- Open Settings and tap General management.
- Tap Keyboard list and default.
- Tap Default keyboard, then select the installed keyboard you want to use.
These are the current steps in Samsung’s Canada support instructions. Menu names and screens can differ by model, software version, carrier, and region. If you cannot find the menu, search Settings for Keyboard list and default.

Change Samsung Keyboard’s language or layout
If you want to keep Samsung Keyboard but type in another language or use a different layout, open Settings and search for Samsung Keyboard. You can also open Samsung Keyboard settings from the keyboard toolbar. Depending on your device, settings include languages, layouts, themes, and keyboard size.

- Open Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings.
- Tap Manage input languages, then Languages and types.
- Choose the language you want to add and configure the available language or layout options.
Samsung Australia documents this route in its guide to adding a second language to Samsung Keyboard. Adding an input language changes what Samsung Keyboard can type; it does not change the language used throughout the phone.

Change the phone’s system language
To change the language of the phone interface, go to Settings > General management > Language. Add a language if needed, then choose whether to keep the current language or set the new one as the default. Samsung describes this separately from keyboard input settings in its language settings instructions.
If you selected Gboard
After installing Gboard, follow Google’s Gboard setup instructions to choose its languages, layouts, and typing settings. To make it the keyboard that opens on your Galaxy phone, use the Samsung default-keyboard selector described above.

What the keyboard setting changes—and what it does not
- Default keyboard: chooses which installed keyboard app opens for typing.
- Samsung Keyboard language or layout: configures typing options within Samsung Keyboard.
- System language: changes the language used by the phone interface.
Samsung notes that its customization instructions “ONLY apply to the default Samsung Keyboard.” That limitation concerns customizing Samsung Keyboard; selecting another installed app is handled by the separate Default keyboard setting.
