How to fix a Pixel that is stuck downloading or installing an Android update depends on which stage it has reached. Check Settings → System → Software updates (some phones show System update): an incomplete download may retry automatically, while a downloaded update installs in the background and becomes active after a restart.
First, identify whether the download or installation is stuck
Open Settings → System → Software updates and read the status. Menu wording can vary by Pixel model and Android version. A download that has not finished is different from a downloaded update that is installing in the background; the right next step depends on that distinction.

| What the phone shows | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Downloading, or a download that did not finish | The update has not completed downloading. | Give it suitable Wi-Fi, power and time. Google says the phone will automatically try again over the next few days if a download does not finish; use the update action in the notification when it appears. |
| Installing, or downloaded and waiting to activate | The update has downloaded and is being installed in the background, or is ready to become active. | If the phone is responsive and installation is progressing, let it continue. A downloaded Pixel Android update becomes active the next time the phone restarts. |
If the update is still downloading
Make the connection and battery suitable
Connect to Wi-Fi and charge the Pixel to at least 75% before updating, as Google recommends. Updates can be large and take time, so a pause by itself does not prove that the phone has failed.
Check available storage if downloads keep failing
Google says a phone can have issues when less than 10% of its storage is available. This is a general troubleshooting threshold, not proof that low storage caused a particular Pixel update to fail. If space is very low, remove or move files and apps you no longer need, then check the update status again.

Let an incomplete download retry
Google’s Pixel guidance says: “If an update starts downloading and doesn’t finish, your device will automatically try again over the next few days.” When the notification arrives, tap its update action. If the phone is responsive, you can also revisit Settings → System → Software updates to check the status.
If the update has downloaded and is installing
Pixel installs downloaded Android updates in the background. If the phone remains responsive and the installation appears to be underway, allow it time rather than interrupting it. Once ready, the update becomes active after the phone restarts.

Restart when it is waiting to activate
If the update has downloaded and the phone is responsive but waiting for a restart, use the normal power menu to restart. After the phone comes back on, check Settings → System → Software updates for its status.

If the Pixel screen is frozen
A frozen phone is different from a responsive phone that is still installing an update. For a Pixel with a frozen screen, Google’s troubleshooting guidance is to hold the power button for about 30 seconds to restart it. After it restarts, check the update status again. This is frozen-screen advice, not a general instruction to force-restart a phone while an installation is visibly progressing.

Use Google’s support and repair options
Contact Google Pixel support for help if the update continues to fail or the phone will not recover. On Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold, Device Health and Support can show device status and support or repair options; availability and labels can vary.
Consider Google’s official computer-based repair tool
Google’s Pixel Update and Software Repair tool provides an official computer-connected route. Its current instructions direct users to turn off the phone, enter Fastboot mode using Power + Volume down, and connect it to a computer by USB. Follow the tool’s on-screen instructions; they can change, and this route is not a guaranteed fix for every update problem. A USB-C cable is useful only if its connector fits both devices and it supports data transfer, not merely charging.

Keep factory reset and flashing procedures as last resorts
A factory reset erases phone data. Back up the Pixel before resetting, and do not treat a reset as an early update troubleshooting step. Android Flash Tool and manual factory-image flashing are described in Google’s developer documentation as development and testing procedures, not simple first-line consumer fixes. Some beta-to-public software transitions also require a full data-erasing reset.
