The right fix depends on what stopped working—such as the screen staying on during calls, auto-rotate, or compass direction—and on your phone’s make and model. Start with the affected feature, check for anything covering the sensor, then use the manufacturer’s diagnostics or support instructions for your specific device.
Identify which sensor-related feature is failing
Record your phone’s make and model, operating-system version, and the feature that behaves incorrectly. Note whether the problem began after a drop, liquid exposure, repair, software update, or change of case or screen protector. Sensor placement and available tests vary by model.

- Screen during calls: The proximity sensor detects a nearby object and commonly turns the display off when the phone is held near your face. Behavior can differ on speakerphone or with a Bluetooth headset.
- Auto-rotate or orientation: Accelerometer and geomagnetic-field readings can be used together to determine device orientation. One sensor-linked feature can fail while another still works.
- Compass or magnetic direction: This is distinct from proximity sensing and may need a different model-specific diagnostic.
- Touch response: A screen that misses or registers taps erratically is not automatically a sensor fault. Google’s Android touchscreen troubleshooting covers checks such as cleaning the screen, removing accessories, and restarting.

- Check and gently clean the sensor area. Sensor location varies; on many phones it is near the top of the front, while some models place it under the display. Wipe the outside of the phone with a clean, soft cloth, as Samsung UK Support recommends. Xiaomi also advises cleaning the top of the device and checking for objects caught in openings or the gap between the frame and screen. Do not insert a pin or other tool into an opening.
- Temporarily remove anything that could cover the sensor. Test without the case, sticker, film, or screen protector, then see whether the affected feature works. Samsung recommends removing accessories when troubleshooting proximity problems; a protector that overlaps the sensor can obstruct it.
- Update and restart. Check for available device software and relevant app updates, install them, then restart the phone if the symptom remains. Samsung and Xiaomi include updates in their troubleshooting guidance. A restart is a basic check, not proof that a sensor has been recalibrated or repaired.
A faint blink near the top of the display is not necessarily a fault: Samsung notes that some models with an under-display proximity sensor may show one.

Run a manufacturer-supported diagnostic
Samsung phones
Open Samsung Members, tap Get help, open View tests under Diagnostics, and select Proximity recognition. Follow the on-screen directions. Menu names or availability may vary with model and software.
Supported iPhone and iPad models
Apple’s diagnostics mode is available on listed supported devices, including iPhone 14 models and later, and requires Wi-Fi. Follow Apple’s current instructions in When and how to use diagnostics mode with iPhone and iPad. Diagnostics can identify potential hardware or software issues; a detected issue may require service.

Use your manufacturer’s current support instructions if your device is not covered by these examples. A diagnostic result can help guide the next step, but a restart alone cannot confirm that a sensor is healthy.
What “resetting” a sensor does—and does not—mean
There is no single reset or recalibration procedure established for all phones and sensor types. Android’s documentation describes how apps obtain sensor data; manufacturer guidance focuses on checks such as cleaning, removing obstructions, updating, restarting, and running supported diagnostics. A compass calibration motion or service-menu option should be used only if the phone maker documents it for your exact model.

Do not start by disabling sensors in developer settings, installing an unknown calibration app, clearing system data, factory-resetting the phone, or flashing firmware. These steps are not supported as general sensor fixes and can cause new problems or erase data. A model-specific software reset, if recommended by the manufacturer, should include its stated consequences and backup instructions.

Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider if a supported sensor test fails, the issue continues after the basic checks, or the phone has damage, liquid exposure, or a recent repair. Do not open the phone or replace a sensor based only on a symptom. For example, Apple’s iPhone 15 Repair Manual lists ambient-light sensor, proximity-sensor, and compass issues among its model-specific troubleshooting topics; it is not a universal repair guide.
