If your mouse cursor lags in Windows 11 or 10, first check the mouse’s power and connection, then troubleshoot Bluetooth or USB issues. Change pointer speed only if movement is consistently too slow or too fast; a speed setting will not fix a connection that pauses or drops.
Notice whether the pointer moves slowly all the time or freezes intermittently. That distinction helps narrow the checks, but neither symptom alone identifies a single cause.

Start with power and the physical connection
Before changing Windows settings, check that the mouse is switched on and has charge or fresh batteries. If it is wired, reconnect it and inspect the cable for damage. Microsoft recommends trying another USB port and connecting directly to the PC rather than through a hub.
Recommended Free Tools
- Wired USB mouse: Unplug and reconnect it, try a different USB port, and bypass any hub.
- USB wireless receiver: Unplug the receiver, wait about 10 seconds, then reconnect it. Check the mouse’s battery or charge as well.
- Bluetooth mouse: Check its battery or charge and keep it close to the PC while testing.
These are connection checks, not proof that the mouse itself is faulty. See Microsoft’s Windows mouse and keyboard troubleshooting steps.

If the cursor pauses or drops, troubleshoot the connection
Intermittent freezes or delayed movement point you toward connection and device checks, rather than the pointer-speed slider. For Bluetooth, confirm Bluetooth is enabled and that the mouse is paired; if pairing is required, put the mouse into pairing mode. If Windows lists the mouse but it will not connect reliably, remove it from the Bluetooth device list and add it again.
- Open Bluetooth settings in Windows and confirm Bluetooth is on.
- Check that the mouse is charged, nearby, and in pairing mode if it needs to pair.
- If it is listed but will not connect, remove the mouse from the device list, then pair it again.
- Restart Bluetooth or restart the PC if the connection still fails.
Microsoft lists battery, range, pairing, drivers, services, and updates among possible causes of Bluetooth connection trouble. Its Bluetooth troubleshooting guide provides further steps.

Allow for reconnection after inactivity
Microsoft’s guidance for Surface mice says Bluetooth devices enter hibernation after 8–10 minutes of inactivity to extend battery life, and that reconnecting can take several seconds. This timing applies to the cited Surface guidance; it should not be assumed to describe every Bluetooth mouse. See Microsoft’s Surface mouse and keyboard troubleshooting page.
Update a Bluetooth adapter driver if connection checks do not help
If the mouse still has Bluetooth connection problems, restart the PC and check the Bluetooth adapter driver. Windows’ Bluetooth instructions cover updating the driver through Device Manager or Windows Update, reinstalling the adapter, and downloading a suitable driver from the PC maker when Windows does not find one. Use the support page for your PC model to identify the correct driver.

If the trouble began after a recent driver or Windows update, rolling back the Bluetooth adapter driver may be an option. These steps address the Bluetooth adapter; they are not a universal fix for a pointer that feels slow or for a faulty mouse. Follow Microsoft’s Bluetooth driver update instructions.
If movement is consistently too slow or too fast, adjust pointer speed
When the pointer responds reliably but its movement feels too slow or too fast, adjust the Windows pointer-speed setting. On Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse and change Mouse pointer speed. Microsoft also documents the Enhance pointer precision option. Windows 10’s settings path differs; see Microsoft’s mouse settings guide for the steps for both versions.

If the mouse does not respond, test it on another PC with the driver it requires. Microsoft recommends this cross-PC check; if the mouse still fails there, replacement may be needed. If it works on the other PC, focus instead on the original computer’s connection or software. See Microsoft’s mouse and keyboard guidance.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The mouse settings remain available; this support change does not prevent you from adjusting pointer settings. Details are on Microsoft’s mouse settings page.
