If your mouse cursor disappears, first press Ctrl to locate it, then check whether Windows is hiding it while you type. If it is merely hard to see, increase its size or change its color in Accessibility settings. These checks distinguish a hidden pointer from one that is difficult to track or not responding.
Find the pointer with the Ctrl-key locator
Windows can show the pointer’s location when you press Ctrl. This is a locator, not a fix for a mouse that has stopped sending input.

- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse, then select Additional mouse settings. In Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Mouse, then select Additional mouse options.
- In Mouse Properties, open the Pointer Options tab.
- Under Visibility, select Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key, then select Apply.
- Press Ctrl to display a locator around the pointer.
Microsoft documents the locator in its mouse settings guidance.
Stop Windows from hiding the pointer while you type
If the pointer vanishes when you type, check the Hide pointer while typing option in Mouse Properties. Clear the checkbox and apply the change if you want the pointer to remain visible during typing.

- Open Mouse Properties > Pointer Options using the route above.
- Under Visibility, clear Hide pointer while typing.
- Select Apply, then test by typing in the place where the pointer was disappearing.
Microsoft describes this behavior specifically for Windows Terminal: “This cursor auto-hiding behavior is by design, but you can disable it.” That guidance does not establish that the setting explains every case of a disappearing pointer. See Windows Terminal troubleshooting.
Make a hard-to-see pointer larger or easier to distinguish
If the pointer is present but difficult to spot, change its size or color in Windows Accessibility settings. These settings improve visibility; they do not determine whether the mouse is sending input.

Use pointer trails if movement makes it hard to track
Pointer trails leave a visual trail as the pointer moves. They can help when the pointer is visible but hard to follow across the screen.

- Your hand can relax in comfort hour after hour with this ergonomically designed mouse. Its contoured shape with soft rubber grips, gently curved sides and broad palm area give you the support you need for effortless control all day long.
- You’ve got the control to do more, faster. Flipping through photo albums and Web pages is a breeze, especially for right-handers—with three standard buttons plus Back/Forward buttons that you can also program to switch applications, go full screen and more. And side-to-side scrolling plus zoom gives you the power to scroll horizontally and vertically through your music library, maps and Facebook feeds, and zoom in and out of photos and budget spreadsheets with a click.* * Requires Logitech SetPoint software (Windows) or Logitech Control Center software (Mac OS X)
- Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
- The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
- Open Mouse Properties > Pointer Options.
- Select Display pointer trails, adjust the trail length if that control is available, and select Apply.
Unlike the Ctrl locator, trails affect how the pointer appears during movement. Microsoft lists pointer trails among the pointer visibility settings in its mouse settings guidance.
Check where and when the pointer disappears
Note whether the problem occurs everywhere, only while typing, or only in one application or field. The pattern helps identify which check to try without assuming a single cause.

- Everywhere, but the pointer may be lost on screen: use the Ctrl-key locator, then consider increasing pointer size or changing its color.
- While typing: check Hide pointer while typing. Microsoft’s documented example applies to Windows Terminal.
- Only in one app or field: restart that app and check whether an app update is available. The Terminal guidance confirms its own hide-while-typing behavior; it does not establish a universal explanation or fix for other apps.
- The pointer does not respond to movement: visibility options cannot diagnose an input problem. Continue with a hardware comparison only after checking the visibility settings.
When to test the mouse itself
If the pointer still does not respond after you have checked the visibility options, try a known-working mouse if one is available. If the other mouse works under the same conditions, that comparison points toward a problem with the original device; it is not proof by itself. Avoid buying a replacement unless the comparison supports a hardware fault. The available secondary troubleshooting source includes replacement as a step, but does not establish faulty hardware as a common or first-line cause: secondary troubleshooting video.

Microsoft’s mouse-settings page says that after October 14, 2025, it will no longer provide free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Because lifecycle eligibility may depend on a device’s edition or enrollment, check Microsoft’s Windows 10 lifecycle information for your device rather than assuming that the statement applies identically to every installation.
