That distinction helps narrow the next step without assuming that a stalled or pending download has a single cause. Then work through the low-risk checks for your device before trying store resets.
First, identify what is failing
- One game: Check its store listing for device availability. If the listing says it is unavailable for your device, Google says you cannot download it on that device through that listing.
- Several apps: Check connection, storage, account or payment prompts, and store operation before considering advanced store troubleshooting.
- The store itself: On Android, follow the Google Play Store app branch below. On iPhone or iPad, try Apple’s general download steps; contact Apple Support if the problem continues.
- A pending or stalled download: Check the connection and retry after the basic checks. “Pending” alone does not identify the cause.
Google separates its Android guidance into basic checks, one-app problems, multiple-app problems, and Play Store app problems: basic troubleshooting, one app, multiple apps, and the Play Store app.

Try the low-risk checks first
Android: Google Play download is stuck or failing
- Check your connection. Make sure Wi-Fi or mobile data works reliably; try Wi-Fi if available.
- Check free storage. Open Settings > Storage. Google says less than 1 GB available can be a sign of low storage, not a universal minimum for every game. As Google puts it, “If your device is low on storage space, it can stop apps from downloading and installing.”
- Check for an Android system update. Install an available update, then retry the download.
- Close and reopen Google Play Store. Try the download again after reopening it.
- Restart the device. A restart is a basic troubleshooting step before resetting store data.
- Check date and time. In Settings, verify that automatic date and time and automatic time zone are enabled if they were off. Google says that if both automatic settings are already on, date and time probably are not the cause.
Google’s instructions are at Fix problems downloading apps with basic troubleshooting steps. Menu labels can differ by Android version or device maker.
iPhone or iPad: App Store download is stuck or failing
- Look for an update or account prompt. Apple recommends checking whether an app update is available and addressing any billing or payment-method verification message. A valid payment method may be required even for a free app.
- Prioritize the download. From the app’s icon on the Home Screen, open its menu and choose Prioritize Download, if that option appears.
- Restart the device and try again.
- Confirm age if prompted. Some regions require age confirmation for certain apps.
Apple’s download or update apps instructions are dated March 30, 2026. If these steps do not resolve the issue, Apple advises contacting Apple Support.

If only one Android game will not install
Check whether the game supports your device
Open the game’s Google Play listing and look for its availability on your device. If Google Play identifies it as unavailable, the listing cannot be used to download it on that device. Check the game’s own support information for an error message or compatibility guidance rather than trying an unofficial download.
Consider reinstalling only after checking save data
Google includes uninstalling and reinstalling the app among its one-app troubleshooting options. Before removing an installed game, check with its developer how progress is saved: local save data may be lost unless the game preserves it through an account or another save system. Google Play’s troubleshooting guidance does not guarantee that an individual game’s progress will be recoverable. If several Android apps will not download
Clear Google Play Store cache and data only after basic checks
Google recommends clearing the Play Store cache and storage/data for multiple-app download problems after simpler checks. Clearing data can remove Play Store settings, including parental controls and password protection, and may require accepting the Terms of Service again. If you take this step, check and restore the settings you use afterward. Follow the current instructions in Google’s multiple-app troubleshooting guide, since menu wording varies by device.

Google advises against clearing Google Play services data unless other troubleshooting has failed. That data may include saved information such as passwords and payment cards, and clearing it can require signing in again. Do not use this as an early fix for a single stalled game.

If Google Play Store itself will not open
Start with the Android basic checks above, then use Google’s Play Store app troubleshooting guide. Its advanced options include reinstalling Play Store updates, removing and re-adding the Google Account, and clearing Play Store cache or data; account or data changes can affect saved information and settings. Follow the guide’s warnings before proceeding.
A factory reset is an escalation, not a routine download fix. Before considering it, back up important data and contact device or Google support so you understand the consequences and have tried safer options.

Check family and content restrictions
Child’s iPhone or iPad
Ask the family organizer or parent/guardian to check whether Ask to Buy approval is required, whether app installation is restricted, and whether age or content settings block the game. Apple’s controls and defaults can vary with software version, age, and region; do not bypass family controls. See Apple’s parental controls guidance, dated September 15, 2026.

If a game appears blocked by age or content settings, check with the family manager and review the game’s listing. Google warns that clearing Play Store data may remove parental-control settings, so account for those settings before using that troubleshooting step. The Google guidance cited here does not establish one universal Family Link fix for every blocked game.
