You cannot confirm that eye drops are sterile by looking at them. Check the printed expiration date and the product’s storage and after-opening directions; if the dropper tip touched your eye or another surface, the packaging is compromised, or use causes symptoms, stop using the bottle and ask a pharmacist or eye-care professional what to do.
How can I tell if eye drops are contaminated?
There is no reliable at-home visual test for sterility. Clear liquid, no unusual smell, or a bottle that looks intact cannot prove that its contents are safe. The FDA says any drug used in the eyes must be sterile because ophthalmic drugs bypass some of the body’s natural defenses and can pose a heightened risk of harm.

Consider how the bottle was handled. Wash your hands before use, and do not let the dropper tip touch your eye, fingers, clothing, or any other surface. If it has touched something, contamination is a concern; do not rely on appearance to decide that the bottle is safe. Ask a pharmacist or eye-care professional for product-specific advice.

Can I use eye drops after they expire?
No. Do not use eye drops past the expiration date printed on the bottle or carton. The FDA says expiration dates mark the period a drug is known to retain its strength, quality, and purity when stored as labeled. Improper storage can undermine those conditions even before the printed date.
How long are eye drops good after opening?
There is no single after-opening period for every eye-drop bottle. Read the specific product label and follow its discard instruction, if one is given. The printed expiration date and any product-specific after-opening limit are separate instructions: follow whichever applicable deadline comes first.

Check the exact product and lot against current FDA alerts
FDA eye-drop alerts can be specific to a brand, product, and lot, and notices can change. Check the FDA’s eye-drop safety page and the linked notice for the exact product you have. Do not treat an older alert as a complete current recall list.

For context, FDA’s January 31, 2024 warning said samples of named South Moon copycat eye drops were contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia complex and advised consumers not to use the identified products. A separate October 27, 2023 warning concerned specified products after manufacturing inspections found insanitary conditions and positive bacterial environmental sampling. These notices apply to the products they identify; they do not establish that other products are contaminated.
Stop use and respond to symptoms
Stop using the drops and contact a health-care professional if you develop eye discharge, pain, changes in vision, discomfort, or signs of infection. Seek medical care promptly for possible infection symptoms. A suspected quality issue and a medical problem are different: contact a clinician for symptoms, and report product-quality concerns or adverse events to FDA MedWatch through the FDA eye-drop safety page.

Dispose of the bottle safely
If an FDA alert covers your product, follow the disposal directions in that notice. For other unused or expired medicine, the FDA recommends a take-back option when available. If none is available, most medicines, including drops, can go in household trash unless they appear on the FDA flush list; follow the agency’s preparation instructions on its medicine disposal page.
