A dark screen does not necessarily mean your Mac Studio is asleep or off: it has no built-in display, and an external monitor can lose power or signal while the Mac is still running. Start by checking the monitor and its connection, then use the Mac’s status light and response to decide whether to troubleshoot the display, power, or startup.
First, check the display and its connection
Confirm that the monitor is switched on and connected to power. Check the video cable at both ends, then disconnect and reconnect the display from the Mac and its power source. Apple’s external display troubleshooting guidance recommends connecting the display directly to the Mac if you are using a hub or dock.

- Make sure the cable or adapter supports the monitor’s required resolution and refresh rate.
- If possible, try a compatible known-good cable to help isolate the connection. The right cable depends on the ports and capabilities of your Mac and monitor.
- If the monitor has DisplayPort input and the current connection is suspect, a USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable may be one option—but check the ports, resolution and refresh-rate requirements first. A new cable is a diagnostic possibility, not a guaranteed fix.

Use the status light to check whether the Mac is on
On Mac Studio, a solid white status indicator means the computer is on or sleeping; the light alone cannot tell you which. The light is off when the computer is turned off. Apple documents this behavior in its Mac status indicator light guide.

- Solid white: The Mac is on or asleep. Continue checking the display path and whether the Mac responds.
- Off: The Mac is turned off, so follow the power and startup checks below.
- Amber: Rapid amber flashing or a solid amber light can indicate firmware recovery mode. Repeated white flashes after turning on can indicate a hardware issue; consult Apple Support rather than treating these patterns as ordinary sleep behavior.
If the Mac appears unresponsive, check power and restart
If the display is still blank and the Mac does not appear to respond, follow Apple’s steps for a Mac that won’t turn on:
- Check that the power cable is undamaged, firmly connected to the Mac and plugged into a working outlet.
- Disconnect accessories such as hubs, external drives and mobile devices.
- Press and hold the Mac Studio’s power button for about 10 seconds, then release it.
- Press the power button normally to try to start the Mac.
Mac Studio uses Apple silicon, so an Intel-style SMC reset is not the answer. Apple says an SMC reset is not needed on Apple silicon Macs.

If the problem keeps returning, isolate software and peripherals
A recurring wake problem can involve sleep settings, network access, sharing, background activity, software or an attached device. Apple’s sleep and wake troubleshooting guide recommends reviewing these possibilities and disconnecting devices to see whether one is involved. Change or remove one factor at a time, then check whether the problem returns; do not assume a setting or peripheral is the cause until you have isolated it.

For the SMC-related step in its sleep and wake guide, Apple’s advice for Apple silicon is to restart the Mac. This is distinct from resetting the SMC on older Intel Macs.

If startup reaches a blank screen, use the Recovery path
If the Mac starts but remains on a blank screen, treat it as a startup problem rather than a routine wake issue. Apple’s blank-screen startup guidance provides this sequence:
- Shut down the Mac by holding the power button, then try starting it again.
- If the screen remains blank, try starting macOS Recovery.
- If Recovery opens, use Disk Utility to repair the startup disk. If the issue persists, reinstall macOS from Recovery.
Some Apple silicon cases may require a firmware revive or restore. If the Mac still will not turn on or the Recovery steps do not resolve the blank screen, contact Apple or an authorized service provider. Do not open the Mac to attempt an internal repair.
