First check memory, swap, processes, and OOM logs; then reduce the workload or make one measured configuration change. Swap or an early OOM service can help in some setups, but neither is a universal fix.
Why does my Linux laptop freeze when memory runs low?
When applications need more memory than the system can readily provide, Linux may reclaim caches, move inactive pages to swap, or eventually kill a process. If the machine is heavily swapping, accessing storage can take so long that the desktop appears frozen even before the kernel kills anything. A browser with many tabs, an IDE, a virtual machine, or a container can drive this pressure.

Memory use by itself is not enough to diagnose the problem: Linux also uses spare memory for caches. Look for sustained pressure, exhausted or heavily used swap, a repeatedly large process, or an out-of-memory (OOM) event. If freezes do not line up with memory pressure, investigate other causes instead of continuing to tune swap.

How can I tell what is using all my RAM?
Take a snapshot while the laptop is responsive
Open a terminal and run:
free -h
swapon --show
ps aux --sort=-%mem | head
free -h summarizes RAM and swap, swapon --show lists active swap devices, and the process listing sorts tasks by memory percentage. These are a snapshot, not a diagnosis on their own. If the same browser, IDE, virtual machine, container, or other workload repeatedly dominates the list, reduce its memory demand or investigate whether that application is leaking memory.

Try a text console if the desktop is stuck
If the desktop is unresponsive but the kernel still responds, try Ctrl+Alt+F3 to switch to a text console. This may not work with every graphics setup, and it cannot recover a hard lockup. If you regain access, save work and collect logs before rebooting; a reboot can erase volatile evidence.
Check kernel and systemd-oomd logs
After recovering or rebooting, inspect kernel messages for the current boot:
journalctl -b -k | grep -Ei 'out of memory|oom|killed process'
For previous boots, use journalctl --list-boots to find the relevant boot and replace -b with its boot offset, such as -b -1, if those logs are retained. Log retention varies by distribution and configuration.

If your distribution provides systemd-oomd, check its status and records too:
systemctl status systemd-oomd
journalctl -b -u systemd-oomd
oomctl
The kernel’s OOM task dump can include a process ID, memory size, resident memory (RSS), swap use, and OOM score. oomctl can show monitored cgroups and pressure for systemd-oomd. No matching log does not rule out memory pressure: the relevant boot’s logs may be unavailable, logging differs between distributions, or another fault may have caused the freeze. The kernel documentation describes OOM behavior and task-dump fields in its virtual-memory sysctl documentation.
How do I stop Linux freezing when RAM is full?
Start with the workload that is driving pressure. Close unneeded heavy applications or browser tabs, reduce a virtual machine’s memory allocation, or update or replace an application that reproducibly leaks memory. These steps are reversible and help establish whether that workload is the trigger. Do not start by copying a collection of kernel tuning values from another machine.

Before changing swap, establish what is already configured. Distributions may use a swap partition, swap file, zram, zswap, or a combination. Check swapon --show and your distribution’s documentation; do not create another swap mechanism without checking its defaults and generators. For disk-backed swap, maintain adequate free disk space and use the distribution-supported method to make configuration persist across reboot.
Would adding swap stop my laptop from freezing?
It may give Linux more room to manage inactive pages, but it does not make disk-backed memory as fast as RAM. If active pages are repeatedly read from slow storage, the laptop can remain painfully delayed. Swap can also give systemd-oomd more time to respond before pressure becomes severe. The systemd-oomd documentation says: “It is highly recommended for the system to have swap enabled for systemd-oomd to function optimally.” That is a recommendation for that service to work optimally, not a universal requirement for every Linux laptop or a prescribed swap size. See the Ubuntu Manpages systemd-oomd.service documentation.
Disk-backed swap
A swap file or partition uses storage as backing for inactive pages. It can help avoid abrupt exhaustion, but heavy swapping may itself make the machine feel frozen. Whether it is appropriate depends on the laptop’s current arrangement, available storage, and distribution-supported setup.

zram
zram creates RAM-backed block devices that store compressed pages. It can provide more effective capacity for pages that compress well, but it still consumes physical RAM and the benefit depends on the workload. Linux kernel documentation says there is little point making a zram device larger than twice physical memory under its expected 2:1 compression ratio; this is guidance, not a universal sizing recipe, and an oversized unused device wastes resources. Consult the Linux kernel zram documentation and your distribution’s configuration guidance.
| Option | What it addresses | Resource and trade-off | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reduce the memory-heavy workload | Lessens the demand causing pressure | Usually avoids adding storage or RAM overhead | May mean closing tabs, reducing VM allocation, or changing applications |
| Disk-backed swap | Provides backing for inactive pages and may give an early OOM service more time | Uses storage; heavy reads and writes can be very slow | Check existing configuration, free space, and distribution-supported persistence |
| zram | Can increase effective capacity for compressible pages | Uses physical RAM for compressed pages and processing | Benefit depends on compressibility; configure through distribution guidance |
| systemd-oomd | Can terminate eligible cgroups before kernel-space OOM | May kill multiple processes in a cgroup and lose unsaved work | Requires compatible systemd, cgroups v2, memory accounting, and kernel PSI; it is not a universal default |
| RAM upgrade | Increases physical memory capacity | Model-dependent hardware change | Some laptops have soldered or otherwise non-upgradeable memory; verify compatibility first |
Should I enable systemd-oomd?
Consider it only after confirming your platform and understanding the data-loss trade-off. systemd-oomd is an early userspace response, not a universal Linux default: it monitors memory pressure and can send SIGKILL to an eligible process cgroup when configured thresholds are exceeded. That may close several processes together and discard unsaved work.
- The Ubuntu Manpages documentation lists a full unified cgroups-v2 hierarchy, memory accounting for monitored units, and kernel PSI support as requirements. It notes that PSI is available from Linux 4.20 onward.
- Check that the service is installed and active, and that the relevant units are actually monitored. Use
oomctlto inspect monitoring. - Swap is strongly recommended for timely reaction. The Ubuntu Manpages systemd-oomd.service page documents the requirements, monitoring, and kill behavior.
- Do not copy threshold examples from Fedora’s historical proposal as current universal settings. The Fedora systemd-oomd proposal concerned Fedora 34 and was last updated 2021-03-30; check defaults and configuration for your actual distribution and release. A dry-run mode is documented by newer systemd versions, but availability depends on version.
Which kernel memory settings should I avoid changing blindly?
Do not treat a particular vm.swappiness value as a general cure. The kernel documentation defines swappiness as an approximate relative I/O cost of swap versus filesystem paging. It documents a default value of 60 and says the right value depends on the workload; values above 100 may be considered for in-memory swap such as zram. A change can shift I/O between types rather than remove pressure, so test one reversible change at a time and measure the workload. See the kernel virtual-memory documentation.

Avoid setting vfs_cache_pressure to zero or applying bundles of sysctl tweaks. The kernel warns that zero prevents reclaiming dentries and inodes under memory pressure and can lead to OOM. Make changes only when you understand their effect and can reverse them.
When should I look beyond memory pressure?
If measurements and logs do not show pressure, or freezes continue after the memory-heavy workload stops, widen the diagnosis. Possible branches include kernel or graphics-driver faults, failing storage, thermal throttling, power problems, or faulty RAM. Review your distribution’s logs and use hardware diagnostics supported for your laptop model. No single hardware test or defective component can be identified without the model and symptoms.
If additional capacity appears necessary, check the laptop model and generation for soldered memory, available slots, and compatible modules before considering an upgrade. A RAM purchase is not a safe recommendation without those details.
