Possibly for some people, but research does not show that owning a cat reliably improves mental health. Some owners find companionship and comfort in their cats; studies, however, report mixed associations across depression, loneliness, social isolation and other outcomes. They cannot establish that adopting a cat will improve your well-being, or that a cat caused a mental-health difference observed in a study.
What the studies actually say
“Mental health” covers distinct outcomes: diagnosed conditions, self-reported symptoms, loneliness, social isolation and general well-being are not interchangeable. The studies also define exposure differently. Living with a cat, owning any kind of pet, broad contact with cats and animal-assisted interaction do not answer the same question.

| Outcome | What the evidence found | What that does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Depression | A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis reported a small association between cat ownership and depression compared with having no pet: OR 1.06 (95% CI 1.02–1.09). In a sensitivity analysis that excluded one study, the estimate was OR 1.06 (95% CI 0.999–1.12), which could be statistically non-significant. | It does not show that cats cause depression or that they treat it. The sensitivity result illustrates how dependent the finding may be on an individual study. |
| Loneliness and social isolation | A 2022 systematic review of 24 pet-ownership studies found mixed results. Among adults, some studies associated pet ownership with lower social isolation; loneliness findings were inconsistent before the pandemic and more often suggested a possible contribution to lower loneliness during it. | This is mostly evidence about pet ownership broadly, not a settled cat-specific effect. Most studies did not find clear differences between cats, dogs and other pets. |
| Schizophrenia-related disorders and psychotic-like experiences | A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis found an association between broadly defined cat exposure and schizophrenia-related disorders. Results for psychotic-like experiences were mixed. | The exposure definitions included more than household cat ownership, and the association does not show that having a cat causes a disorder or indicate an individual’s absolute risk. |
| Mental health during COVID-19 | A large UK longitudinal study published in 2024 found no beneficial associations between living with a pet and measured mental-health outcomes during the pandemic. | It was not a cat-only finding and does not settle what every owner experiences or what happens in other periods. |
Does a cat help with loneliness?
A cat may offer companionship and a reason to build routines, and an individual owner may genuinely feel less alone. That experience matters, but it is different from evidence that cat ownership reduces loneliness across a population. The 2022 review found inconsistent loneliness results and generally did not separate the effects of cats from those of other pets. Its findings also varied by age group and pandemic timing.

It is therefore more accurate to say that some people find a cat helpful for companionship than to claim that cats are a proven solution to loneliness. A pet also does not automatically replace human connection, social support or care for persistent distress.

Can having a cat help depression?
The 2025 meta-analysis found a small association between cat ownership and depression compared with having no pet. But removing one study in its sensitivity analysis made the estimate compatible with no association at conventional statistical significance. That uncertainty means the result should not be read as evidence that cats either cause depression or prevent it.
Owners and non-owners may differ in circumstances that also relate to mental health, and the studies cannot by themselves separate those differences from any effect of living with a cat. Cat ownership has not been established in these sources as a treatment for depression. If you are experiencing depression, a cat should not be treated as a substitute for professional help.

Why does cat exposure appear in research on psychosis?
A 2024 review by John J. McGrath, Carmen C. W. Lim and Sukanta Saha screened 1,915 records and included 17 studies. In 10 studies reporting unadjusted estimates, the pooled odds ratio for broadly defined cat exposure and schizophrenia-related outcomes was 2.14 (95% CI 1.29–3.55); excluding one outlier study produced an estimate of 1.56 (95% CI 1.27–1.92) across nine studies. In five studies reporting adjusted estimates, the pooled odds ratio was 2.44 (95% CI 1.59–3.73); after excluding a study with suboptimal exposure or design features, it was 2.40 (95% CI 1.50–3.86) across four studies.
These are associations from studies with varied exposure definitions, not estimates of the absolute risk for someone who owns a cat. Broad cat exposure included categories such as ownership, bites and contact; the review does not establish that a household cat causes schizophrenia. The authors reported mixed findings for psychotic-like experiences and concluded: “There is a need for more high-quality studies in this field.”

Why the findings do not prove cause and effect
Most importantly, an observed difference between pet owners and non-owners does not tell us what would happen if the same person adopted a cat. The groups may differ before ownership begins, and studies vary in who they include, when they were conducted and what they count as exposure or an outcome. A finding about any pet cannot automatically be assigned to cats; a finding about symptoms or social isolation is not the same as a clinical diagnosis.
The 2024 UK pandemic study is useful counterevidence to a simple claim that living with a pet improves mental health, but it does not prove that pets never help. Taken together, the studies describe patterns in particular populations and contexts; they do not provide a dependable prediction for an individual.

What to consider if you are thinking about getting a cat
Research does not establish cat adoption as a mental-health intervention. If you are considering one, decide based on whether you can care for an animal over time, not on a promise of improved mood. A cat brings companionship for some people, but also daily responsibilities and costs; the studies above do not show that one experience applies to everyone.
