If your PC now starts straight into Windows after an update, Linux may still be installed: the firmware may simply be choosing Windows Boot Manager instead of the Linux boot entry. Check the firmware’s one-time boot menu first. Before changing boot order or other firmware settings, locate your BitLocker recovery key if Windows drive encryption is enabled; a boot-order change can trigger a recovery prompt.
First identify what is failing
“Linux disappeared” can describe several different problems. Note exactly what happens before changing partitions or reinstalling anything:

- Windows starts without showing GRUB: check whether the Linux entry is still available in firmware.
- The Linux entry is missing from firmware: investigate the boot mode and Linux boot files before assuming the operating system itself is gone.
- GRUB appears but reports an error: the bootloader is present, but it may not be able to find or start the Linux installation.
- Windows also fails to start: this is a Windows startup problem as well as, or instead of, a Linux boot problem.
- A Secure Boot error appears: a signed boot component may be rejected under the current firmware trust or revocation policy.
The timing after a Windows update is useful context, but it does not establish that the update erased Linux. Avoid clearing the TPM, formatting the EFI System Partition, reinstalling Linux, or running broad partition-repair commands as initial troubleshooting steps.
Check the firmware boot menu and order
Restart and open the computer’s one-time boot menu or UEFI setup screen. The key and menu labels differ by manufacturer, so use the device maker’s instructions if needed. Look for an entry named Ubuntu, Linux, or a distribution-specific label, as well as Windows Boot Manager.

If the Linux entry starts Linux
The installation is likely still bootable, and the immediate issue may be startup selection. In firmware setup, use the manufacturer’s interface to move the intended Linux or GRUB entry ahead of Windows Boot Manager, then save and restart. Changing boot order can alter the startup measurement BitLocker checks, so keep the recovery key available before making this change. Microsoft explains this behavior in its BitLocker FAQ.
If the Linux entry is absent or fails
Do not assume the Linux partitions have been deleted. Continue by checking firmware mode and, if necessary, use live media to inspect or repair the Linux boot path.
Make sure the repair media uses the right boot mode
UEFI and Legacy/BIOS are different firmware boot modes. A repair process launched in the wrong mode may target a boot path the computer is not using. Ubuntu’s UEFI guidance says Ubuntu should use UEFI when the other installed systems use UEFI, and Legacy mode when the existing systems use Legacy mode.

If you are unsure how Windows was installed, check the firmware’s boot options and consult the computer maker’s documentation before attempting a bootloader repair. When creating or starting repair media, select the entry that matches the mode used by the installed operating systems.
Repair GRUB from a live USB when Linux will not start
If Linux remains on the disk but its boot entry or GRUB menu is missing or broken, Ubuntu installation media on a USB flash drive can provide a live session and access to recovery tools. Boot the live USB in the matching UEFI or Legacy mode. Ubuntu’s community-maintained Boot-Repair instructions describe using Boot-Repair’s recommended repair flow from a live session.
Those instructions are Ubuntu-specific and may not reflect every current release detail. If you use Fedora, Debian, Mint, or another distribution, follow that distribution’s current bootloader recovery instructions rather than applying Ubuntu-specific steps blindly.

Before attempting a manual repair
- Identify the Linux root partition and, for a UEFI installation, the EFI System Partition.
- Confirm the target disk, mount points, distribution, and firmware mode.
- Use repair commands documented for your distribution and layout; there is no single safe generic
grub-installcommand for every dual-boot arrangement.
Do not format the EFI System Partition as a shortcut. It may contain boot files used by more than one operating system.

Separate Windows startup repair from Linux boot repair
If Windows itself no longer starts, use Windows Recovery Environment or Windows installation media as appropriate. Microsoft documents BCDBoot as a utility for adding Windows boot options and repairing Windows boot files. BCDBoot addresses the Windows boot path; it does not reinstall GRUB or repair a Linux bootloader.

BitLocker
BitLocker protects Windows data and may request its recovery key after a firmware boot-order change because the order typically affects the system measurement BitLocker verifies. Find the recovery key before changing startup settings. A normal Windows quality or feature update does not, by itself, require users to suspend BitLocker, according to Microsoft’s BitLocker FAQ. Microsoft describes separate circumstances involving some non-Microsoft firmware or Secure Boot database changes where suspension may be needed, depending on integrity-validation configuration.

Secure Boot and Linux boot components
Secure Boot checks boot software against the trust policy stored in firmware. If a Linux shim or bootloader is rejected, consult your distribution’s current signed-bootloader guidance and verify the firmware’s trust settings. Turning Secure Boot off is not a universal first-line fix.
Certificate changes in 2026 do not mean every older Linux installation will suddenly stop booting. Microsoft’s guidance for Linux distributions says an existing 2011-signed shim can continue to boot if the firmware still trusts the Microsoft Corporation UEFI CA 2011 and neither the shim nor its SBAT level has been revoked. Microsoft’s OEM Secure Boot guidance says 2011 certificates begin expiring in June 2026; its Linux distribution transition guidance describes the 2023 certificate transition as beginning June 26, 2026. Trust databases and revocation state vary, so use current guidance from your Linux distribution and computer maker for the specific machine.
