If the drain continues, check the phone’s battery-usage screen before changing settings: it can help distinguish app activity from weak signal, display use, or system tasks.
Could setup or an update explain the drain?
Possibly. A new phone may use extra power while it finishes setup, and software updates can continue background tasks after the phone is usable. Apple’s Battery Insights can identify ongoing setup or iOS update activity that may temporarily affect battery life and thermal performance. Apple advises waiting a few days after an update and checking again. Samsung also lists initial setup as a possible reason a new Galaxy uses more battery.

These are plausible temporary causes, not proof that every new phone’s drain will resolve on its own. Note when the change began and whether the phone is still restoring, updating, or installing apps. If the drain persists after that activity has settled, investigate what is using power.
How to find what is using the battery
Look at recent usage before switching off features. Compare the timing and the phone’s reported activity; then make one targeted change and see whether the pattern changes.

iPhone
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Compare Daily Usage with recent days, then inspect App and System Activity Usage.
- Check the activity labels. “Background Activity” indicates an app used power in the background. Low or no coverage can point to energy used searching for signal or operating with weak signal; notification activity may indicate that alerts woke the device.
Apple’s iPhone battery guidance explains the usage view and related settings. Labels and available features depend on the iPhone model and iOS version.
Google Pixel
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Switch between the apps and systems views to see where usage appears.
- Tap an app with high use to inspect or adjust its background use. Google recommends leaving app battery use set to Optimized for apps generally.

Samsung Galaxy
Check Battery and device care and the Battery settings for options such as Optimize now, Background usage limits, and Adaptive battery. Samsung’s Galaxy battery guidance covers these tools. Paths, names, and availability vary by model and software release.

Which changes are worth trying?
Use the battery report to choose a likely cause. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it helped, and keep functions you depend on.
Limit background use selectively
If one app shows unusually high background use and does not need timely syncing or notifications, restrict its background activity using that phone’s app or battery settings. Avoid applying restrictions to every app by default: they can delay updates, sync, or alerts you rely on. On Pixel, Google recommends the Optimized setting as the general choice rather than broadly restricting apps.
Check signal and network use
Use Wi-Fi for internet access when it is available. Apple says Wi-Fi generally uses less battery than mobile networks for internet use, and strong signal conditions reduce energy use on both Wi-Fi and mobile connections. If you are somewhere with little or no coverage for an extended period, Airplane Mode can prevent repeated signal searching, but calls will be unavailable while it is on.

On supported iPhones, Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data > 5G Auto can switch to LTE when 5G does not improve the experience. Menu availability depends on the model and carrier. Samsung notes that some 5G implementations connect over multiple networks, which can contribute to power use.
Review screen use
High brightness keeps the display using more power. Reduce brightness or enable Auto-Brightness if that suits your usage. The battery screen can help you judge whether display use is a meaningful part of your drain.
Use Low Power Mode as a short-term measure
Low Power Mode can help stretch a charge when needed, but it reduces or pauses some functions. It does not identify the cause of unusually fast drain, so treat it as a temporary option rather than a diagnosis.

Restart and check for software updates
For a Pixel, Google includes restarting the phone and checking Android and app updates among its troubleshooting steps. Use the current update controls for your own device and model. An update or restart may help resolve a software issue, but neither guarantees a battery-life improvement.

If the drain continues after setup or update activity has passed and the usage screen does not point to a fixable app or condition, use the device’s built-in health or diagnostic tools where available.

Google lists Battery Diagnostics on Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold. Its Pixel troubleshooting procedure for an overnight check is to charge the phone to 100%, disconnect it, leave it idle overnight, then inspect usage if the loss exceeds 10%. That threshold is Google’s Pixel-specific troubleshooting criterion, not a general standard for all phones.

Follow the steps in Google’s Pixel battery troubleshooting guidance. It also recommends contacting support if the issue remains after troubleshooting.
iPhone battery health
Check Settings > Battery > Battery Health or the equivalent battery-health screen available on your model. Apple says to consider battery service when Battery Health shows Service. See Apple’s battery guidance for model- and iOS-dependent details.
Galaxy support
If Samsung’s battery and device-care tools do not clarify persistent drain, contact Samsung or an authorized service provider for model-specific help. Menu options and diagnostics differ across devices.
