If the overlay disappears but the page still will not respond, refresh the page or navigate away. For site owners, the underlying fix is to check the modal’s close and focus behavior, then investigate JavaScript errors or component conflicts.
Close the lightbox as a visitor
- Use the visible close control. Look inside the overlay for an X, Close, Cancel or equivalent button. A modal should offer a clear way to dismiss it; the W3C’s modal-dialog guidance recommends including a visible close button in the dialog’s tab sequence. W3C WAI guidance.
- Press Escape. The W3C modal-dialog pattern specifies Escape as a close key. A native HTML
<dialog>opened withshowModal()also supports Escape dismissal by default. A custom lightbox may not, so Escape failing does not, by itself, reveal what is broken. W3C WAI modal-dialog pattern and MDN: <dialog>. - Recover the page if it remains blocked. Refresh the page, or navigate away and reopen it if needed. This restores your ability to use the site, but it does not repair the site’s implementation.
Why the page is blocked while the overlay is open
A modal is meant to prevent interaction with the content behind it while it is open. Keyboard focus should move into the dialog and stay within it until it closes; when appropriate, focus should then return to the control that opened it. These behaviors help keyboard and assistive-technology users operate the overlay without accidentally interacting with the page beneath it. W3C WAI: H102 and W3C WAI modal-dialog pattern.

What site owners should check
Confirm the close behavior
Verify that the visible close button actually dismisses the overlay and that Escape closes it if the component is intended to behave as a modal. Native <dialog> elements opened with showModal() provide default Escape dismissal and make the rest of the document inert while the dialog is open. A custom lightbox must implement equivalent closing, background-blocking and focus behavior itself. W3C WAI: H102, W3C WAI modal-dialog pattern and MDN: <dialog>.

Open the browser’s developer tools and look for JavaScript errors when the lightbox opens and closes. If the site uses plugins or a theme with interactive components, test the page with the lightbox or another relevant component disabled, one change at a time. A WordPress support discussion mentions JavaScript errors and plugin or theme conflicts as possible explanations for a page becoming non-clickable after a lightbox closes; it is one reported case, not proof of a universal cause. Check focus and modal state after closing
If the overlay is no longer visible but the page remains unclickable, inspect whether the implementation has left the background inert or an overlay layer in place. Confirm that closing the dialog restores the page’s interactive state and, where applicable, returns keyboard focus to the control that opened it. Native dialogs supply some modal behavior, but custom lightboxes need to manage their own state and focus correctly. W3C WAI: H102 and MDN: <dialog>.
