Choose a gaming monitor by matching its resolution, refresh rate, panel characteristics, and connections to the games you play and the hardware you own. Competitive players often benefit more from a refresh rate their PC can sustain; players who favor detailed, cinematic games may prefer higher resolution, stronger contrast, or a larger screen. The highest number on a spec sheet is not automatically the best fit.

Start with your games and hardware

Before comparing models, decide what matters most: responsive motion in competitive games, image detail in cinematic games, or a balance of both. Then consider the frame rates your PC typically produces at the resolution you want. A monitor cannot make a graphics card render more frames, and a high-resolution display can increase the work required of the GPU.

Dell’s September 2026 gaming monitor guide makes a similar distinction: competitive shooters can benefit from higher refresh rates, while single-player and console gaming may put more value on resolution and screen size. Treat this as a starting point, not a rule; your games, hardware, budget, and preferences determine the right balance. Dell’s gaming monitor buying guide

Which resolution and screen size should you choose?

Resolution is the number of pixels in the image. The common options are Full HD (FHD, 1920 × 1080), Quad HD (QHD, 2560 × 1440), and 4K UHD (3840 × 2160), according to MSI’s monitor buying guide. More pixels can reveal finer detail, but your PC has to render them. If your priority is high frame rates in esports games and your system struggles at higher resolutions, FHD may be a more practical choice than 4K.

Screen size affects how densely those pixels are packed. In its guide updated September 10, 2025, RTINGS gives a 27-inch 1440p display as 109 pixels per inch (PPI), compared with 163 PPI for a 27-inch 4K display. These figures describe pixel density, not a guarantee that every viewer will notice the difference equally. RTINGS’ gaming monitor guide

  • Consider FHD if you want a lower rendering load and your PC’s strengths or your games make high frame rates the priority.
  • Consider QHD if you want more detail than FHD and your graphics hardware can drive your chosen games at satisfactory frame rates.
  • Consider 4K UHD if fine detail is important and your PC or console can deliver the resolution and refresh-rate mode you intend to use.

Judge resolution alongside screen size and your usual desk viewing distance. A resolution number alone does not tell you how sharp the image will look in your setup.

How much refresh rate do you need?

Refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), is how many times per second the monitor updates its image. A 240 Hz monitor can refresh 240 times per second, but that does not mean your game will run at 240 frames per second. The game, graphics hardware, monitor input, and signal bandwidth all affect what you can actually use.

  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

Higher refresh rates can make motion look smoother, particularly when the system supplies high frame rates. But returns diminish: RTINGS notes that the difference between 60 Hz and 120 Hz is greater than the difference between 360 Hz and 480 Hz. Competitive players may value very high refresh rates; many others should compare the monitor’s refresh rate with the frame rates their system usually reaches in their own games rather than paying for a capability they rarely use.

Check the supported modes for the exact connection you plan to use. RTINGS describes one model-specific case in which an Alienware monitor rated for up to 165 Hz was limited over HDMI 2.0 to 100 Hz with an 8-bit signal or 60 Hz with a 10-bit signal. That example is not a universal limit for HDMI 2.0; it illustrates why you should check the monitor’s specifications for the resolution, refresh rate, and color depth combination you need.

IPS vs. VA vs. OLED for gaming

Panel type can suggest likely strengths and weaknesses, but it does not determine the complete performance of a particular monitor. Check independent testing of the model you are considering, especially for response behavior, contrast, brightness, and uniformity.

Dell 27 240Hz Gaming Monitor - SE2726HG - 27-inch FHD (1920x1080) Display, in-Plane Switching (IPS) Technology, AMD FreeSync Premium, TÜV 3-Star, 2X HDMI, DisplayPort 1.4, Tilt
  • Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
  • Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
  • Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
  • Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
Panel type Typical strengths Trade-offs to check
IPS LCD Wide viewing angles and generally good color characteristics; a versatile all-round option. Contrast is typically lower than on VA or OLED displays.
VA LCD Typically higher contrast than IPS, which can help dark scenes. Some models have slow dark pixel transitions that produce black smearing.
OLED Each pixel emits its own light, enabling deep blacks and strong contrast; RTINGS characterizes OLED as the strongest of these types for motion handling. Consider your room lighting and priorities, and check performance on the specific model.

TN is another LCD panel type with its own image and response trade-offs. Mini-LED is different: it is a backlight technology used with LCD, and can improve local dimming and brightness. Neither label replaces checking how the complete monitor performs.

Response time, motion blur, and input lag are different

Refresh rate describes how often the screen updates. Pixel response time describes how quickly a pixel changes from one state to another. Slow transitions can leave trails or cause black smearing; aggressive overdrive settings can produce inverse ghosting, where bright artifacts appear around moving objects. A high refresh-rate rating alone does not prove that transitions are fast or well controlled.

Input lag is the delay added as the monitor receives, processes, and begins displaying an input. It is only one part of total system latency, which also involves other parts of the gaming system. When comparing shortlisted models, use independent testing for actual response behavior, overshoot, and input lag rather than assuming a manufacturer’s headline figure tells the whole story. What adaptive sync and connections should you check?

Variable refresh rate (VRR) lets a display coordinate its refresh with changing frame rates from the graphics source, which can reduce screen tearing. FreeSync, G-SYNC, and HDMI Forum VRR are examples of VRR technologies. Intel describes VRR as “a general term for technologies that sync up your monitor and GPU.” Confirm compatibility between the monitor and your particular PC graphics hardware or console; a feature name by itself does not establish that every combination will work. Intel’s gaming monitor buying guide

VRR can also have model-specific drawbacks. RTINGS notes that some monitors may show flicker during large frame-rate changes, especially in dark scenes; OLED and VA examples may be prone. It is not inevitable on every monitor. Look for testing of the model you are considering if this behavior matters to you.

For either a PC or console, verify the whole signal path: source output, monitor input, cable, resolution, color depth, and refresh rate. A port’s bandwidth can restrict which combinations are available. For a console, check the exact console generation and model’s output modes alongside the monitor’s supported HDMI modes; a high-Hz PC monitor does not guarantee that a console will run at its maximum refresh rate through it.

How to compare your shortlist

Compare at least two monitors that fit your budget and intended use. For each one, check:

  • Native resolution and screen size, considered together with pixel density and desk viewing distance.
  • Refresh rate at the resolution and color depth you will actually use—not just the maximum number shown in a headline specification.
  • Independent results for pixel response, overshoot, and input lag.
  • Panel type, contrast, brightness, viewing angles, and how those traits suit your room lighting.
  • Adaptive-sync compatibility with your specific GPU or console.
  • Port bandwidth and supported modes, including the cable and source output needed for your chosen settings.
  • Price and warranty terms in current listings; both can vary by seller and region.

Will it fit your monitor arm or wall mount?

If you plan to mount the monitor, check its VESA hole pattern, screw requirements, and the mount’s weight capacity before buying. VESA specifies mounting-hole spacing and screws, as Intel explains in its gaming monitor guide. Matching the pattern is only part of the check: the mount must also support the monitor’s weight and use the required hardware.
