First find out whether the black screen is in the stream itself or only on one viewer’s device. Check Gyre’s preview or a local recording, then ask a viewer on a different connection to check the YouTube player. If the preview and multiple independent viewers show black, investigate the uploaded video, Gyre/stream configuration and YouTube’s health messages. If only one viewer is affected, troubleshoot that viewer’s playback instead.
1. Identify whether the problem is stream-side or viewer-side
A black YouTube player does not by itself prove Gyre is sending a black picture. YouTube’s guidance distinguishes an issue reported by one viewer, which may be caused by that viewer’s computer or internet connection, from one reported by many viewers on different connections, which may point to the encoder. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide recommends checking the encoder output and the viewer reports.

- One viewer sees black: Have that person try another browser or device and, if possible, another network. Do not change the stream settings until you know whether others see the same issue.
- Viewers on unrelated connections also see black: Check Gyre’s preview, the selected source file, the broadcast pairing and YouTube’s stream-health information.
- The owner cannot check a preview: Use any available local archive or other output check, and ask more than one viewer on separate connections. Note exactly which checks were possible.
2. If the stream itself is black, check the source video
Gyre’s workflow uses pre-recorded videos uploaded to Gyre storage. Confirm that the broadcast is using the intended uploaded file and that the file plays with a visible picture before changing encoding or YouTube settings. Gyre says the video must be properly converted for the platform. Its preparation guidance is available in the Gyre video requirements article.
- Open the source file locally and check that the picture appears from beginning to end, not just in its opening frame.
- Confirm that the selected Gyre item is the file you checked. If a playlist is being used, check the relevant item rather than assuming every item is healthy.
- If the source itself is black, replace or re-export that media file; a player or stream-key change will not restore picture missing from the source.
3. Check the preview, encoder output and archive
YouTube advises using the latest encoder version, checking the stream’s picture and sound in the encoder, reviewing encoder errors and CPU load, inspecting a local archive for audio or video faults, and testing outbound internet when the encoder output looks healthy. Apply those checks to the parts of the Gyre workflow you can inspect.

- Look at the preview or output: If it is already black, focus on the selected source and the Gyre/encoder path.
- Review errors and resource load: Check any available encoder or stream logs for errors, and note CPU load if an encoder is involved.
- Inspect a local archive, if available: A black archive points toward the source or encoding path; a healthy archive with a black YouTube output points to a later stage.
- Check outbound connectivity: If the preview and archive are healthy but YouTube playback is not, test the network path used to send the stream.
For this specific symptom, YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps are diagnostic guidance, not proof that any particular encoder setting caused the black screen.
4. Read YouTube’s stream-health message before changing settings
Open the broadcast’s health information in YouTube Live Control Room and read the actual issue reported. YouTube’s Live API health-status documentation lists configuration issue types involving video, audio, bitrate, frame rate, codecs, keyframes and consistency between primary and backup streams.

Use the reported issue to choose what to investigate. A black screen alone does not establish that the codec, bitrate or keyframe interval is wrong. Avoid changing several encoding values at once: doing so can obscure which change mattered.
5. Verify Gyre’s YouTube broadcast and stream key
Gyre’s first-stream setup guide describes creating a YouTube broadcast, using the scheduled-broadcast workflow for a looped stream, choosing visibility and auto-start as needed, and entering the stream key and broadcast ID in Gyre.

- KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
- SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
- SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.

- VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that the broadcast you intend to run is the one paired with Gyre.
- Check that the stream key and broadcast ID entered in Gyre belong to that broadcast.
- If the encoder reports a startup or key error, YouTube recommends obtaining a new stream key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder. Treat this as a response to a key or startup error, not as a generic black-screen fix.
- Review the broadcast’s visibility and auto-start choices against how you intend to start and publish the loop.
6. Treat Gyre’s published video settings as a starting point
Gyre’s requirements article lists these preparation values. They are published recommendations, not a diagnosis of every black-screen incident:
| Setting | Gyre’s published value |
|---|---|
| Resolution | 1920×1080 or 1280×720 |
| Video codec | H.264 |
| Video bitrate | 3072–6144 kbps |
| Audio bitrate | 128 kbps |
| Frame rate | 30 FPS |
The same article’s final listed line says “Frame rates 44.1 kHz.” That wording appears to confuse frame rate with an audio sample-rate unit; do not use 44.1 kHz as a frame-rate setting. Check current platform guidance for the audio sample rate rather than inferring one from that line.

Gyre names Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut as examples of software that can convert or optimize a video. They are examples, not required purchases. Re-export only when checking the source or stream health gives you a reason to suspect the media file or its format.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors7. If only one viewer sees black, troubleshoot playback on that device
YouTube’s playback help page discusses a green screen with audio, not a confirmed Gyre-originated black stream. It recommends trying another browser, disabling Chrome hardware acceleration and updating graphics drivers. These are reasonable viewer-side checks when the problem is isolated to one device, but YouTube does not present them as a guaranteed fix for a black Gyre stream.

8. Common symptoms and the next check
| What you observe | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| One viewer sees black; others see the picture | Test another browser, device or network on the affected viewer’s side. |
| Gyre preview or local source is black | Play the source file locally and verify the selected uploaded item. |
| Preview is healthy, but viewers on different connections see black | Read YouTube’s stream-health message and inspect the broadcast pairing and outbound path. |
| YouTube reports a stream-key or startup error | Check the key and broadcast pairing; if needed, create a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. |
| Picture is black only in one browser or device | Use the viewer-side playback checks; do not assume an encoder fault. |
9. Escalate with useful evidence
If the picture remains black, Gyre’s setup guide recommends contacting its support team. Include the affected broadcast, whether Gyre’s preview or a local archive is also black, the exact YouTube health messages, the source file details, and whether viewers on independent connections reproduce the problem. That evidence helps distinguish a media, setup, stream-health or playback fault.
Or let it run in the cloud
