Start by identifying the guitar’s exact model and the platform it was made for. There is no universal pairing sequence: a Rock Band 4 guitar for PS4 pairs differently from a legacy Rock Band instrument, which requires its original wireless adapter. Also determine whether the guitar is missing from the system’s device list or connects to the system but is not recognized by a game.
Before troubleshooting, identify the guitar and the connection problem
Check the label or model information on the instrument, then note the console or PC you are using. Establish whether it is a Rock Band 4 guitar or a legacy instrument, and whether its connection method is Bluetooth or a model-specific wireless USB adapter. Do not assume that a generic Bluetooth receiver or USB dongle can replace a missing adapter.

Then identify where the connection fails:
- Not detected by the system: troubleshoot power, pairing, and the correct adapter or Bluetooth path.
- Visible or paired in the system, but absent in a game: check whether that specific game and mode support the instrument.
- Connects, then drops repeatedly: start with fresh batteries and correct pairing; supported firmware may be relevant for certain PS4 guitars.
Fix a Rock Band 4 guitar that will not connect to PS4
Epic Games’ Rock Band support instructions for PS4 specify fresh batteries and pairing through the console’s Bluetooth device menu. A red indicator means the batteries should be replaced.

- On the PS4, open Settings > Devices > Bluetooth Devices.
- Hold the PlayStation button on the guitar, then press the small wireless button on the guitar—the white button where an amp plug would be.
- When the instrument appears in the device list, select it and assign it to a profile.
- Wait for the guitar’s indicator to turn solid blue. Epic says a solid blue light means the controller is connected. If it continues blinking, repeat the pairing steps.
- Open Rock Band 4 and press Options on the guitar to join.

Fix a legacy Rock Band guitar that will not sync
Legacy Rock Band guitars use the original wireless adapter made for the instrument and console family. Epic Games’ legacy support instructions say legacy controllers require the original adapter; a general-purpose USB or Bluetooth adapter is not a substitute.
- Connect the guitar’s original wireless adapter to the console.
- Press the sync button on the adapter, then press the sync button on the guitar.
- Look for solid lights on both the adapter and guitar. Epic identifies solid lights on both as a successful connection.
If the guitar keeps blinking, remove other instruments while pairing and try a different USB port. You can also retry with the guitar’s sync button first, followed by the adapter or console button. If repeated attempts with the correct adapter still fail, the issue may involve hardware.

For frequent disconnects after replacing the batteries, Harmonix says its PS4 Wireless Guitar firmware update addresses potential connection issues. Its published update procedure requires a Bluetooth-capable Windows 7, 8.1, or 10 PC, or a Mac running OS X 10.10 or later. These are the requirements stated on the firmware page; check that its download is still available before attempting the legacy procedure.

Harmonix states that the Xbox One Wireless Guitar does not need a firmware update. Do not treat this PS4-specific update as a fix for every guitar model or platform.

If the guitar connects but the game does not detect it
System pairing and in-game support are separate. A guitar can connect to a console or PC and still be unsupported by a particular game or mode. Check the game’s current controller and mode support before repeating pairing steps or replacing hardware.
Fortnite Festival Pro Lead and Pro Bass
Epic’s Fortnite Festival v30.00 announcement, published May 23, 2024, says Pro Lead and Pro Bass can be played on console or PC without a supported guitar controller. Keyboard-and-mouse keybinds and controller-to-keyboard remapping are available as input alternatives. This is a workaround for those Festival modes, not a repair for a guitar that will not pair.

When to replace an adapter or guitar
Consider replacement only after you have confirmed the instrument’s model, platform compatibility, required wireless method, and correct pairing steps. For a legacy Rock Band guitar, first verify that you have its original, model-appropriate adapter; a new guitar will not solve a missing-adapter problem.
Current manufacturer product listings separate PDP RIFFMASTER wireless guitar controller versions by platform. The Xbox version is listed for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11 PC; the PlayStation version is listed for PS4 and PS5. Both product pages list a wireless USB dongle in the box. Choose the platform-matched version rather than assuming the two are interchangeable.
