First identify what “not working” means: no power, no Wi-Fi, missing from the Google Home app, failed setup, or no response during use. Try the low-risk checks and a reboot before changing network settings or resetting the device. A factory reset erases device data and cannot be undone.
Start with the symptom and basic checks
Check the device’s power connection and confirm that your home Wi-Fi works on another device. Make sure the Google Home app is current. If you are setting up the speaker or display, keep your phone or tablet near it: Google recommends a distance of 5–20 feet during setup.

- No power: Check that the device is plugged in and powered on before troubleshooting the app or network.
- Wi-Fi trouble: Check whether the network works on another device and whether its name, password, or provider has changed.
- Missing from the app: Check power, setup mode, app version, and distance before trying another setup device.
- Setup fails: Verify the Wi-Fi password and router connection, then follow the network checks below.
Google’s reboot instructions note that rebooting may fix several issues.
Reboot the speaker or display
A reboot is not a factory reset: it restarts the device without the data-clearing consequences of a reset.

If the device will not connect to Wi-Fi
If you lost Wi-Fi or changed the network name, password, or service provider, the device may need to be set up again in the Google Home app. Google also documents forgetting a saved network in the device settings and completing setup again. See Google’s Wi-Fi connection guidance for the steps that apply to your device.

Google says public Wi-Fi may not work for Nest speakers and displays, and hotspots are not officially supported. A different Wi-Fi band is a troubleshooting option, not a universal fix.

Use a factory reset only as a last resort
A factory reset clears device data and cannot be undone. Google says you cannot reset a speaker or display by voice or from the Google Home app. Reset-button sequences differ by model, so identify your exact device and follow its instructions on Google’s model-specific reset page. Try the basic checks and reboot first.
