If your daily steps have stopped updating, a recorded activity is missing, or your watch shows an old weather forecast, work through the connection checks before removing the watch from Garmin Connect. Sync needs both a working Bluetooth connection between the watch and phone and internet access on the phone; Garmin also recommends checking its service status and restarting both devices early in troubleshooting.
Use the order below and check the affected information after each attempt. That makes it easier to tell whether a step helped and avoids resetting a pairing before simpler causes have been ruled out.

First, check whether the problem is syncing or a different connection issue
A sync problem means information such as steps or a recorded activity is not reaching Garmin Connect, or information such as a weather forecast is not refreshing. Start by checking whether the data is actually missing in the app. A watch that is paired but not currently syncing is different from a general Bluetooth or phone-notification problem, so use the symptom to judge whether each retry has worked.

The steps below address those sync symptoms; they do not establish that every Bluetooth, alert, or notification problem has the same cause.

Before changing anything, identify what you expected to see and where it is missing. For example, note whether a particular recorded activity is absent, whether the daily step count in Garmin Connect has not caught up with the watch, or whether the forecast displayed on the watch is stale. That gives you a specific result to check after each retry. A connected watch or a sync animation may show that a sync attempt is happening, but the final test is whether the particular information you were looking for appears or updates.
Also distinguish the two links involved. Bluetooth is the local connection between the watch and phone. The phone’s Wi-Fi or cellular connection is what lets Garmin Connect reach Garmin’s service. A working local Bluetooth connection alone does not establish that data has reached the service, and internet access on the phone does not replace a watch-to-phone connection.
Work through the least disruptive checks first
1. Check Bluetooth, internet, and Garmin service status
- Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on both the phone and the Garmin watch.
- Confirm that the phone has an active Wi-Fi or cellular internet connection. Bluetooth connects the watch to the phone; the phone’s internet connection is needed for Garmin Connect to reach Garmin’s service.
- Check Garmin’s service status before changing the pairing. Service availability can change, so check the current status while troubleshooting rather than relying on an old status report.
- Keep the watch near the phone during the test. Garmin Support gives an approximate Bluetooth range of 30 feet (10 meters), but objects and other wireless signals can reduce the effective range. Treat that as a guideline, not a guarantee for every room or environment.
If Bluetooth is off, internet is unavailable, or Garmin reports a service issue, address that condition and try syncing again before moving on. A phone that can connect to the watch locally still needs internet access for data to reach Garmin Connect.
Recommended Free Tools
For a useful first test, bring the watch and phone close together, confirm Bluetooth is on at both ends, and make sure the phone can use the internet over either Wi-Fi or cellular data. Then check Garmin’s status page at the time you are troubleshooting. These checks establish whether the basic route is available: watch to phone over Bluetooth, and phone to Garmin Connect over the internet. If a service issue is reported, waiting for service availability and retrying is more appropriate than immediately deleting a pairing that may be working locally.
Garmin’s approximate 30-foot (10-meter) range is not a promise that every watch will sync from that distance. Walls, furniture, other objects, and nearby wireless signals can reduce the effective range. For troubleshooting, remove distance and obstructions as variables by placing the watch near the phone. If the watch works at close range, test again from the location where you normally keep it; if it does not, continue through the checks rather than assuming range alone explains the problem.
2. Restart the watch and phone
Restart both devices, then reopen Garmin Connect and try again. Garmin Support’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance says: “Many issues related to Bluetooth® can be resolved by restarting your phone and Garmin device.” Restarting is an early check; it does not guarantee that every sync problem will be resolved.
Restart the watch and the smartphone, rather than restarting only one and assuming the other side of the connection is ready. Once both have started again, open Garmin Connect with the watch nearby and give the sync attempt time to proceed. Recheck the missing step count, activity, or forecast rather than judging success solely by the fact that the app opens or the watch appears connected.
If a restart restores syncing, there is no need to proceed to the more disruptive pairing reset simply to complete every item in this guide. Confirm that the affected data arrived, and keep the other steps as follow-up options only if the same symptom returns.

3. Check watch power modes
On watch models that offer them, Battery Saver, Stealth Mode, or Expedition Mode can disable Bluetooth. If one of these modes is active, turn it off temporarily and retry the sync. Menu names and paths differ by model, so use the owner’s manual for the specific watch instead of relying on a universal button sequence.
This check matters because a watch can be powered on while a selected mode has disabled Bluetooth. If you use one of the named modes, check whether it is active before treating the issue as a failed pairing. Temporarily turn it off, keep the watch close to the phone, and retry. If you do not see the mode or setting described, do not guess at a menu path: models differ, and the owner’s manual is the appropriate reference for the controls on that watch.
After the test, check whether the sync symptom changed. A successful sync after disabling a mode points to that mode as a condition to consider when syncing in the future; it does not mean you must leave the mode off permanently. Choose settings based on your use of the watch, and turn off a mode only as needed to test Bluetooth syncing.
Retry sync and verify that the missing data arrived
With the watch connected, opening Garmin Connect should start syncing. Garmin identifies a green dot at the top of the app’s Home screen and a sync animation next to the device as visual indicators that syncing is in progress. Wait for the attempt to finish, then check the actual symptom: look for the missing activity or see whether steps or the forecast have updated. An indicator that a sync is underway is not, by itself, confirmation that the data you need has appeared.
If the data is still missing, continue to the next checks rather than repeatedly opening the app without changing anything. Test again after each change so you can tell whether it made a difference.
Use the indicators as status cues, not as the whole diagnosis. The green dot and device animation are Garmin’s stated signs that syncing is underway; they do not replace checking the relevant record or value. If you were troubleshooting a missing workout, look for that activity in Garmin Connect. If the issue was steps or a forecast, verify that those specific items have updated. If nothing changed, record which checks you have already completed and continue to the next step.
Testing after one change at a time also makes the process more efficient. For instance, if you checked Bluetooth, restarted both devices, and changed power modes all at once, it would be unclear which condition mattered. Instead, retry after the basic connection check, after the restart, and after a mode change if applicable. If the symptom resolves, stop; if it persists, move to pairing and the software and permission checks.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Remove and re-add the watch only if basic checks fail
Resetting the pairing is more disruptive than checking Bluetooth, internet, service status, power modes, and restarting. If those simpler checks have not restored syncing, remove or unpair the watch from Garmin Connect and, where applicable, from the phone’s Bluetooth settings. Then add it again through Garmin Connect.

- In Garmin Connect, remove the watch using the device-management controls available in your version of the app.
- If the watch remains listed in the phone’s Bluetooth settings, remove or forget it there as applicable. Garmin notes that in Garmin Connect app version 5.21 and newer, removing a device in the app may also remove it from the phone’s Bluetooth menu.
- Start the pairing process from Garmin Connect and follow the prompts for your watch and phone. Garmin’s pairing guidance does not recommend pairing from the phone’s Bluetooth menu instead of through Garmin Connect.
- When pairing is complete, open Garmin Connect and check for the sync indicators and the specific data that was missing.
The exact menu wording and order depend on the watch model, phone operating system, and Garmin Connect version. If a control is not where you expect, follow the current Garmin pairing instructions for your combination rather than choosing a similarly named setting at random.
Do not jump to this step just because the watch does not appear to be syncing at one moment. First make sure Bluetooth and internet are available, check Garmin service status, restart both devices, and consider whether a power mode has disabled Bluetooth. Pairing reset is a later troubleshooting step because it changes the relationship between the watch, app, and phone rather than simply checking whether the existing connection can sync.
When removing the device, check both places only as appropriate for your setup. Garmin says that Garmin Connect 5.21 and newer may remove the watch from the phone’s Bluetooth menu when you remove it in the app. If it is still listed there, Garmin’s instructions allow you to remove or forget it as applicable. The behavior and menu wording can vary, so do not interpret a missing Bluetooth-menu entry as a reason to pair from that menu instead. Start the new pairing from Garmin Connect and follow the prompts.
After re-pairing, repeat the same verification you used before: wait for the sync attempt, then check the missing activity, steps, or forecast. If the watch pairs but the information is still absent, pairing alone has not resolved the reported symptom. Continue with permissions, compatibility, and updates rather than repeatedly removing and adding the device.
Check app permissions, compatibility, and software updates
Confirm the app and phone can support the connection
Make sure Garmin Connect is current and that the phone meets the app’s requirements. For an iPhone, confirm Garmin Connect has Bluetooth permission. Garmin’s Bluetooth-permission instructions specifically say they do not apply to iOS 18 or newer, so older menu directions should not be treated as universal current steps on those versions.
On Android 12 or later, Garmin identifies the Nearby Devices permission as relevant when the app is finding a device during pairing. If the watch cannot be found during a re-pairing attempt, check that permission as well as Bluetooth. Permission labels and settings locations can vary with the phone and operating-system version.
Permissions are especially relevant when the app cannot find the watch during a pairing attempt. On iPhone, the specific Garmin Bluetooth-permission page has an iOS 18-and-newer exclusion; follow current guidance for that version rather than assuming older navigation instructions still apply. On Android 12 or later, Nearby Devices permission is relevant to finding a device during pairing. These are not universal menu paths: the phone’s operating system and manufacturer can affect labels and settings locations.
Keep the distinction between permissions and the sync symptom in mind. A permission check can help when the app cannot find the watch while pairing. If the watch is already connected but a particular data item is missing, still verify the basic connection, service, app, and software conditions, then use the result of a fresh sync attempt to determine whether the symptom is resolved.

Check for watch software updates
Check that the watch software is current. Garmin identifies Garmin Express on a personal computer as one way to check for and install available watch software updates. An update is maintenance guidance, not a promise that updating will fix every sync issue. After installing an available update, retry the sync and verify whether the missing information appears.
Keep Garmin Connect current as well. The instructions and menus discussed here can differ by app version, and Garmin specifically notes the version 5.21-and-newer behavior when removing a device. Update checks are a way to ensure you are working with available software, not a substitute for diagnosing Bluetooth, internet, or service status.
If using Garmin Express, connect the watch to a personal computer and use Garmin Express to check for and install an available watch software update. Do not assume that an update is available, or that an update will necessarily correct the sync problem. Once any available update is installed, reconnect to the phone as needed and test the original symptom in Garmin Connect.
Use the result to choose the next step
- Bluetooth or internet was off: Enable the needed connection and retry before changing the pairing.
- Garmin service status showed an issue: Retry when the service is available; avoid treating a service interruption as proof that the watch needs to be re-paired.
- A restart or power-mode change restored syncing: Confirm that the affected steps, activity, or forecast is now present in Garmin Connect.
- The watch still will not sync after pairing again: Recheck the relevant permissions, app and phone requirements, and available watch software updates. If the problem remains, consult Garmin Support for model- and phone-specific troubleshooting.
Do not assume a replacement watch, cable, adapter, or other accessory is needed based only on a missing sync. The troubleshooting sequence for this symptom is built around connections, service availability, device settings, restarts, permissions, updates, and pairing.
A practical stopping rule is to stop escalating when the intended information is present. If the steps have updated, the recorded activity has appeared, or the forecast has refreshed, the sync problem you identified is resolved for that test. If it has not, follow the next step in order and make another targeted check. If all of the relevant connection, restart, power-mode, re-pairing, permission, and update checks have failed, the remaining useful step is Garmin Support’s model- and phone-specific guidance. A watch model, phone model, operating system, and Garmin Connect version help make that conversation specific; there is no single menu sequence that applies to every combination.
There is no basis here to buy a new watch or a generic Bluetooth accessory as a sync fix. Garmin’s stated troubleshooting sequence focuses on the existing watch and phone, their connections and settings, Garmin service availability, software, and pairing. Keep the troubleshooting proportional to the symptom: verify the route, test, and escalate only when those checks do not restore the missing data.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Garmin Connect need internet to sync my watch?
Yes. The watch connects to the phone over Bluetooth, and the phone needs an active Wi-Fi or cellular internet connection for Garmin Connect to reach Garmin’s service. Check both links separately.

Should I pair my Garmin watch from my phone’s Bluetooth settings?
No. Garmin’s pairing guidance recommends starting the pairing process through Garmin Connect, not from the phone’s Bluetooth menu. Menu wording differs by watch, phone operating system, and app version.
What do the green dot and sync animation in Garmin Connect mean?
Garmin identifies the green dot at the top of the Home screen and the animation next to the device as indicators that syncing is in progress. Check the actual missing activity, steps, or forecast to confirm that the information arrived.
Can a watch power mode stop Bluetooth syncing?
On models that offer them, Battery Saver, Stealth Mode, or Expedition Mode can disable Bluetooth. Temporarily turn off the relevant mode and retry; check the owner’s manual for your model’s settings.

For pairing, Garmin identifies Nearby Devices permission as relevant on Android 12 or later. On iPhone, check Garmin Connect’s Bluetooth permission, but note that Garmin’s specific older permission instructions do not apply to iOS 18 or newer.
Will removing and adding the watch always fix syncing?
No. Re-pairing is a later step to try after checking Bluetooth, internet, Garmin service status, restarting both devices, and watch power modes. Verify the missing data after pairing again; a completed pairing does not by itself prove that the data synced.
Do I need a new watch or Bluetooth accessory if Garmin Connect will not sync?
A missing sync by itself does not establish that new hardware is needed. First work through the connection, service, restart, power-mode, permission, software-update, and pairing checks; contact Garmin Support for model-specific help if the issue remains.
The Bottom Line
Start with Bluetooth, phone internet, Garmin service status, proximity, and a restart of both devices. Check whether a watch power mode has disabled Bluetooth, then retry and confirm that the missing steps, activity, or forecast actually appears. Remove and re-add the watch through Garmin Connect only if simpler checks fail, and then review permissions, app and phone requirements, and available watch software updates.
