To check whether a Windows 11 laptop supports Wi-Fi 7, open Command Prompt or Terminal, run netsh wlan show drivers, and look for 802.11be under “Radio types supported.” For an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android phone, or laptop running another operating system, check the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model and configuration; look specifically for “Wi-Fi 7” or “802.11be.” Wi-Fi 6E, 6 GHz support, a recent release date, or a Wi-Fi 7 router alone does not prove that a device supports Wi-Fi 7.
What does it mean for a phone or laptop to support Wi-Fi 7?
Wi-Fi 7 is the name commonly used for the Wi-Fi generation designated 802.11be. To connect using it, the device needs a compatible Wi-Fi adapter and the software support required by its operating system. A compatible router or access point is also needed to use Wi-Fi 7 on the network. These are separate requirements: a new router cannot add Wi-Fi 7 capability to a phone or laptop that lacks compatible hardware.

There are two different questions to answer when checking a device:
- Can the device support the Wi-Fi 7 generation? Look for
802.11beor an explicit Wi-Fi 7 designation in the device or adapter’s specifications. - Can it use particular Wi-Fi 7 features here? That can depend on the operating system, drivers, router or access point, and regional rules. A device may be able to join a Wi-Fi 7 network without supporting every feature associated with Wi-Fi 7.
Check the exact device and, where applicable, its installed wireless adapter. A product family can be sold in configurations with different components, so a specification for a similar-looking model may not describe the device you own.

It helps to treat compatibility as a chain rather than a single yes-or-no setting. First establish that the client device has Wi-Fi 7-capable hardware. Then check that its operating system and drivers can use that hardware. Finally, verify that the router or access point supports Wi-Fi 7. A positive answer at one stage does not automatically answer the others: a Wi-Fi 7 router may serve older clients, and a capable laptop may connect to a network that does not provide Wi-Fi 7.
How do I check if my Windows laptop supports 802.11be?
On Windows, the quickest built-in check is Microsoft’s recommended adapter query. It reports the radio types supported by the installed wireless adapter and its driver.
- Open Command Prompt or Terminal.
- Enter
netsh wlan show driversand press Enter. - Find the line labeled Radio types supported.
- Look for
802.11be. If it appears, the adapter reports Wi-Fi 7 support. If the list includes802.11axbut not802.11be, it identifies Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E capability, not Wi-Fi 7.
Microsoft gives this command in its Windows support guidance, “Faster and more secure Wi-Fi in Windows.” The result is a useful check of the adapter as Windows currently sees it; it is not proof that the laptop is connected to a Wi-Fi 7 router or using every Wi-Fi 7 feature.
Read the result literally. The key entry is 802.11be, not simply a long list of radio types or the presence of a newer-sounding Wi-Fi label elsewhere in the output. If 802.11be is listed, Windows reports that the detected adapter supports that standard. If it is absent, the output does not confirm Wi-Fi 7 capability. In particular, 802.11ax indicates Wi-Fi 6/6E generation support, not Wi-Fi 7.
The command checks the adapter Windows has detected and the capabilities exposed through its driver. It does not identify whether your router is Wi-Fi 7, whether you are currently connected using Wi-Fi 7, or whether a specific Wi-Fi 7 feature is active. Those are separate checks. Use the adapter query to answer the client-capability question, then verify the exact laptop configuration and software requirements.
Confirm which adapter is installed
Check the wireless adapter model as a second source of evidence. In Windows, open Device Manager and expand Network adapters to find the Wi-Fi adapter entry. Then compare that exact adapter and the laptop’s full configuration with the computer maker’s specifications or support information. Laptop model names often cover multiple configurations, and the wireless card may differ between them. Intel advises contacting the computer’s original equipment manufacturer if the adapter is not listed in Device Manager.
This extra check matters especially when you are looking at a product page, a review, or a support page for a laptop family. The family name may cover several processor, regional, or hardware configurations. A Wi-Fi 7 option in one configuration does not establish that every version of that laptop has the same wireless card. Match the full model or configuration identifier and, if possible, the adapter model shown on your own computer.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. The absence of 802.11be in an incomplete or unavailable driver report is not a reliable basis for concluding that the physical hardware cannot support it. Check the computer maker’s documentation for the exact configuration and resolve any driver or detection issue before treating the result as final.

If the adapter appears but its model or capabilities do not line up with the laptop maker’s specifications, do not assume that one generic model listing settles the matter. Confirm the installed component and the exact computer configuration through the manufacturer’s support information. A specification for a different configuration may be accurate for that version and still not describe yours.
Check Windows version and driver requirements
Adapter capability is only one part of Windows support. Microsoft says Wi-Fi 7 is available starting with Windows 11 version 24H2. Its requirements specify Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, a Wi-Fi 7-capable network adapter, and compatible drivers. A laptop with a capable card may therefore still need a supported Windows version and driver before Wi-Fi 7 support is available in practice.
To check the Windows version, open Settings > System > About and read the Windows specifications. If the adapter’s official specification says Wi-Fi 7 but Windows does not report 802.11be, check the Windows version and the laptop manufacturer’s driver support for that exact adapter and computer configuration.

Check the parts of the requirement that apply to the device rather than treating any one update or component as a complete answer.
How do I check whether my iPhone, iPad, or Mac supports Wi-Fi 7?
Use Apple’s support page titled “Wi-Fi 7 availability on Apple devices” and match the exact product model and chip listed for your device. Apple’s page distinguishes devices that can join a Wi-Fi 7 network from those that support all Wi-Fi 7 features. Do not assume that a feature list for one model applies to every device in the same product family.
Apple published the availability page on August 25, 2026. Because supported products and feature details can change as Apple releases devices, consult its current list rather than relying on a saved list or a general claim about a product generation. Apple describes the listed devices as supporting Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) across the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz Wi-Fi bands; the page’s model-specific notes determine which device supports which capabilities.
When checking an Apple device, first identify the precise model and chip rather than searching only by a broad family name. Then compare it with the current availability list. If the list says a model can join a Wi-Fi 7 network, that is not necessarily the same as saying it supports every Wi-Fi 7 feature. Read the notes for the specific model if you care about a particular capability, rather than treating “supports Wi-Fi 7” as a promise that all models have identical feature support.

For 6 GHz features in particular, Apple says operation is limited to places where local regulations permit unlicensed Wi-Fi use. A device’s listed capability does not by itself guarantee that every band or feature will be available in every country.

How can I check an Android phone or a laptop running macOS or Linux?
There is no single settings path established for every Android maker or for macOS and Linux. Menus, software versions, and the way adapter capabilities are displayed vary. The dependable general approach is to identify the exact device model and configuration, then consult its manufacturer’s official specifications or support page.
- Find the full model name and model number in the device’s settings, on its label, or in its original product documentation.
- Search the manufacturer’s official specification or support information for that exact model or configuration.
- Look for an explicit “Wi-Fi 7” or
802.11beentry in the wireless specifications. - If the specification describes only a broad family, confirm the regional and hardware configuration with the manufacturer before treating it as proof for your particular device.
Do not infer Wi-Fi 7 from a phone’s launch year, premium position, support for the 6 GHz band, or ability to join a Wi-Fi 7 network. Those clues do not establish that the device has an 802.11be-capable adapter.
For an Android phone, start with the full model number, not just the commercial name displayed on the box or in advertising. A manufacturer’s official page for the precise model is stronger evidence than a general description of a phone series. If the page does not say Wi-Fi 7 or 802.11be, do not fill in the gap based on the phone’s price, processor, launch date, or the fact that it can see a 6 GHz network. Ask the manufacturer to clarify the model’s wireless specification if the information is incomplete.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe same principle applies to laptops using macOS or Linux: check the exact machine and its maker’s official support information rather than expecting a universal menu sequence. The steps and labels can vary by system and device, so a procedure found for another operating system or laptop is not necessarily a reliable check for yours. When documentation covers several configurations, match the full model and configuration before relying on it.
In all of these cases, distinguish an explicit specification from an inference. A documented 802.11be or Wi-Fi 7 entry is direct evidence of the generation. References only to Wi-Fi 6E, 6 GHz, or compatibility with a Wi-Fi 7 network answer different questions and are not substitutes.
Is Wi-Fi 6E the same as Wi-Fi 7?
No. Wi-Fi 6E is an extension of Wi-Fi 6 that adds access to the 6 GHz band where permitted; Wi-Fi 7 is the next generation, designated 802.11be. Seeing 6 GHz in a specification is not enough to identify a device as Wi-Fi 7. Intel states that Wi-Fi 6 products are not designed for 6 GHz, while Apple’s Wi-Fi 7 guidance separately identifies Wi-Fi 7 devices and explains that their features vary by model. Check for the generation designation rather than using band support as a substitute.
These labels answer different questions: a band tells you where a device may communicate, while the Wi-Fi generation identifies a set of networking capabilities. In addition, 6 GHz use depends on local regulation, and Intel notes that a computer manufacturer may not enable 6 GHz on a platform in a given country.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →This is why “it supports 6 GHz” is not a safe shortcut for “it supports Wi-Fi 7.” The band and generation are related parts of wireless compatibility, but they are not interchangeable labels. Use 802.11be or an explicit Wi-Fi 7 specification to answer the generation question. Use the manufacturer’s model-specific notes and local availability information to understand whether a band or feature can be used in your location.

There is a similar distinction between joining a Wi-Fi 7 network and supporting all of its features. Apple’s model list explicitly makes that distinction. If your question is simply whether a device can connect to a Wi-Fi 7 network, consult the exact-model compatibility information. If you need a particular feature, check that feature separately instead of assuming it follows from the generation label alone.
What can prevent a Wi-Fi 7 device from using Wi-Fi 7?
Compatibility depends on the client device as well as the network and its operating environment. A device may be listed as Wi-Fi 7-capable yet not use Wi-Fi 7 in a particular setup.
- The router or access point is not Wi-Fi 7-capable. Microsoft says a Wi-Fi 7 router or access point is required for full Wi-Fi 7 functionality. The client still needs its own compatible adapter; replacing only the router does not upgrade the client.
- The operating system or driver does not meet requirements. For Windows, Microsoft specifies Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, a compatible Wi-Fi 7 adapter, and compatible drivers.
- The installed adapter differs from the assumed configuration. A laptop family can include multiple wireless-card options. Verify the actual adapter and the exact computer configuration rather than relying on another unit’s specifications.
- A band or feature is unavailable in the region. Use of 6 GHz is subject to local rules, and manufacturers may control whether it is enabled on a platform in a particular country.
- The device supports some, but not all, features. Apple’s model guidance distinguishes joining a Wi-Fi 7 network from supporting all Wi-Fi 7 features, so check the feature-level notes if a particular capability matters.
These conditions explain why a single test can produce an answer that seems incomplete. An adapter report addresses the client adapter; the device maker’s page addresses the model or configuration; the operating-system requirement addresses software; and the router specification addresses network equipment. Use the check that corresponds to the part of the connection you are trying to verify.
If you are troubleshooting a connection, first confirm the client’s documented Wi-Fi 7 capability and, on Windows, the adapter report and software requirements. Then check whether the access point supports Wi-Fi 7. If the remaining question concerns a specific band or feature, account for local regulation and any model-specific limitations. The checks establish compatibility conditions; they do not guarantee that every feature will be available in every place or configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which check should I trust?
Use more than one source when the answer will affect a purchase or troubleshooting decision. An operating-system report describes the adapter and driver currently detected by the device; an official product specification ties a capability to a device model or configuration. The most useful evidence is specific to the hardware you own.
| Check | What it can establish | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
netsh wlan show drivers on Windows |
Whether the currently detected adapter reports 802.11be among its supported radio types. |
Windows version, compatible driver, and the precise adapter installed. |
| Device maker’s exact-model specification | Whether the documented device or configuration is specified as Wi-Fi 7 or 802.11be. |
That the model number and regional/configuration variant match the device in hand. |
| Apple’s availability list | Apple’s supported models and its distinction between joining a Wi-Fi 7 network and supporting all Wi-Fi 7 features. | The exact model and chip, plus feature and regional notes on the current page. |
| Router or access-point specifications | Whether the network equipment supports Wi-Fi 7 on the network side. | This does not establish that the phone or laptop has a Wi-Fi 7 adapter. |
The strongest check depends on the question. For an already-owned Windows laptop, the command is a quick report of the adapter recognized by Windows, while the installed adapter model and exact laptop specification help confirm what is physically configured. For a phone or a non-Windows laptop, an official exact-model specification is the practical route. For Apple products, use Apple’s current availability list and read its feature distinctions. A router’s product page answers only the router-side question.
If the sources disagree, do not resolve the conflict by guessing from the device’s price or age. Recheck the exact adapter and configuration, confirm that the software and driver are current for that hardware, and use the computer or phone maker’s support information to clarify the discrepancy.
What should I check before buying a Wi-Fi 7 router?
First confirm that the phone or laptop you want to use with it supports Wi-Fi 7. Then check that its software and, for Windows, compatible driver meet the relevant requirements. Only after establishing client support does the router specification answer the remaining network-side question. A Wi-Fi 7 access point can provide a Wi-Fi 7-capable network, but it cannot supply missing Wi-Fi 7 hardware to an older or otherwise incompatible client.

A practical order is: identify the exact client model; confirm Wi-Fi 7 or 802.11be in the relevant official documentation or Windows adapter output; verify applicable operating-system and driver requirements; and then compare the router or access point’s Wi-Fi 7 support. If the client does not support Wi-Fi 7, a new router does not change that. It may still serve the device as a network connection, but the device’s own capability remains the limiting factor for Wi-Fi 7.
Do not buy a router on the assumption that it will add Wi-Fi 7 to every connected device. Establish client support first, then decide whether Wi-Fi 7 network equipment meets your needs. The device, its software, the network equipment, and local band availability remain distinct parts of the compatibility check.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my phone support Wi-Fi 7?
Check the exact phone model on its manufacturer’s official specifications or support page and look for an explicit “Wi-Fi 7” or 802.11be entry. Do not infer support from the phone’s release year, premium tier, 6 GHz support, or ability to join a Wi-Fi 7 network.
How do I know if my Windows laptop has Wi-Fi 7?
Run netsh wlan show drivers in Command Prompt or Terminal and look for 802.11be under “Radio types supported.” Then verify the installed adapter and exact laptop configuration. Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and compatible drivers are also required for Windows Wi-Fi 7 support.
Is Wi-Fi 6E the same as Wi-Fi 7?
No. Wi-Fi 6E is an extension of Wi-Fi 6, while Wi-Fi 7 is designated 802.11be. Support for 6 GHz alone does not prove that a device supports Wi-Fi 7.
Will a Wi-Fi 7 router make my phone or laptop Wi-Fi 7-compatible?
No. A Wi-Fi 7 router or access point provides support on the network side, but the phone or laptop still needs its own compatible adapter and software. A router cannot add missing Wi-Fi 7 capability to a client device.
Can a device join a Wi-Fi 7 network without supporting every Wi-Fi 7 feature?
Yes. Apple’s availability guidance distinguishes devices that can join a Wi-Fi 7 network from devices that support all Wi-Fi 7 features. Check the exact model’s notes if a particular feature matters.

The Bottom Line
Look for 802.11be or an explicit Wi-Fi 7 listing for the exact device or adapter. On Windows, check netsh wlan show drivers, then confirm the adapter, Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, and compatible drivers. For phones and other systems, use the manufacturer’s exact-model information. Wi-Fi 6E, 6 GHz access, or a Wi-Fi 7 router alone is not proof that a client device supports Wi-Fi 7.
